This really depends on your BRM plan. Players can have BRM plans that have anything from 20-100+ buyins depending on the type of player they are (casual through to pro) and the skill of the field they are playing at compared to their own skill.

For example in your situation if you find you are killing at 2nl, but aren't quite at the threshold to step up to fully play the next level of stakes you could mix your tables. So if you are playing four tables you may play three tables of 2nl and mix in one table of 5nl to see how you fair there.

There is no rule that says you have to play all tables of the same stakes. But do set a BRM plan for your buyins and try to keep to it fairly well. Are you playing in euros or dollars?

Yeah, the main thing is to have what's called a stop-loss and be very strict about it (no matter how tempted you are to keep going if you're down). You might say something like if you go down four buy-ins then you go back to 2nl until you've got enough for a shot again. As long as you're willing to move down with a good roll for 2nl then it shouldn't be an issue. It won't take long till you get another go.

If you are playing 4 tables go on nl5 now, but be prepared to go down if something goes wrong. And there is another important question: how many hands you played on nl2 and what is your winrate? For me, the winrate from my current stake is the most important thing while considering moving up.

I'd rather 2 table at a higher limit than 4 tabling at a lower limit.
