Please note that if you post your name and skype in here, it will be available for the world to find. Please think about it before you post it.

Thought about creating a study group for winning players at 6 max 10-20-25NL who want to cut down their leaks, increase the winrate, move up but don't have sufficient self motivation or have a hard time doing it themselves.

I'm thinking we should be 5-6 people, maybe up to 10. Not sure how many is too many, or what the most efficient number is, open to suggestions here.

Methods : I want us to use something like Google Docs, an online collaboration tool where we can post formatted HH's, graphs, articles etc. in proper readable format, not the skype crap. We would all be able to see them and comment on them at the same time.

Tasks :

1) Analyzing hhs marked by the players with a set format for analysis (i.e. start with pre-flop, comment on all the options available, stack sizes, range etc. and same for every street). There is a thread on another forum with a very good format and logic for analyzing hands. We should all express opinions and arrive to a conclusion

2) Reading strategy articles / watching vids. The idea is to do a read / watch a vid together then comment on it, share ideas, check our DBs for similar situations etc. This way we will remember it much better. A good idea would be to have a curriculum and learn one lesson / week for example.

3) Sweat each other regularly. Everyone in the group should be sweated at least once / week, and do sweats at least once/week as well. Perhaps have thematic sweats where we focus on implementing a new concept or fixing a leak.

4) Become a close nit group that supports each other through hard times, which we all know are always just around the corner in poker.

Timeline :

I want us to have meetings at least twice a week, up to three times, for 2 hours each. These should be at a fixed time convenient to all, and everyone should attend them. I believe this can force us not to slack off / be lazy, just think of it as football practice or w/e where if you don't show you get behind in training.

Sweat sessions should be separate from this all-group-meetings where we discuss hh's / strategies.

Requirements :

1) Be at least a 10NL player iwth sufficient bankroll, and have a winrate (before rakeback)
2) Be serious about doing this, don't want no-shows at the agreed meeting times.

About me :

Started taking poker seriously in April, started by beating 20NL then my leaks caught up to me, playing 10NL now my winrate is just 2.7 ptbb / 100 over 100K hands. I believe I can do a much better one, that's what this group is for.

If interested, please PM me, or skype : cardplay3r

Modnote: There are multiple study groups in this thread. Feel free to post about yours as well.

Hi, thanks for letting me know! Sounds good, want to give this a shot first though as I believe smaller units + structured schedule = better progress...

PM'ed.

I forgot to mention about skype, sure we'll use voice conferences along with google docs as it's faster and easier to get things done.

Also, thinking some more, I want to give it a go with 6 players, more could be too many for this. We'll see how it goes, already got great interest in pms which I really appreciate, thx everyone

Would we be obligated to attend a minimum of two two hour sessions a week or can we drop in? I ask because with my schedule, if I set aside 4 hours a week to study poker, it would not leave me with much time to play poker.

I don't like the term 'obliged' tbh, I'd like people to join this group for pleasure, because they love the game and want to explore it to see where it gets them.

As for the hours, the main intention was to play less, study more in the first place. I'm tired of mindless grinding without getting (significantly) better and want to change that, I think 4 hours / week is a bare minimum with this game...and that's for micros

I'm definitely interested. Was a 10NL player until I began focusing more on step tourneys/ went on a pretty gross downswing. Currently sitting on 2 step 4, 6 step 3, 5 step 2, and 1 step 1 ticket though so if it's important I be at the 10NL level I could start looking for Matrix tourneys to cash out and get rolled again. Just got TableNinjaFT and I'm 8-12 tabling 5NL grinding back, hopefully my level won't be equated with my interest/ commitment to the game.

Dusty Schmidt's book Treat Your Poker Like A Business (which I highly recommend) discusses the proper playing/studying time allotment for micro/SS grinders as being around 80/20 play/study. I think requiring a certain amount of time per week is going to turn a lot of people off who could otherwise be an asset to a new group. Scheduling meeting times isn't a bad idea, I just feel like punishing people for not being able to attend would be counter productive. Many of the skills needed to beat these stakes are already cemented in the minds of people spending time on this forum, it's a mater of tilt management and being disciplined enough to get in the volume necessary to move up. Not that everybody can't use a little polish, I just believe that practicing at the tables and bankroll management are the most important lessons to be learned at these stakes. I'll keep my eye on the forum as this develops!

Sorry, don't really get from this if you're interested in joining or not because you don't like my proposed format for the group?

I love the idea of starting a group and I definitely think it will help my game. My previous post was just some haphazard suggestions that came to mind when reading your original post; I was worried that some players who might not have a ton of free time might be turned away from a group with regimented scheduling. This would hurt the group as a whole because we might miss out on some quality input from those players less willing to fully commit to the group. I would certainly attend every meeting I could, but with tons of players all over the globe I think attempting to schedule meetings that suit everyone's schedule would be difficult. Maybe members could take it upon themselves to start topic-based meetings and organize some hands to discuss, then have sign up sheets so anybody available and interested could choose to attend rather than having 3 two hour blocks per week that would need to be cleared for all members. Hopefully that clears things up, I have nothing but respect for this and am pretty pumped about the idea!

OP likened this to football practice. If you never went to practice, you'd never get better. If you never set aside a time for everyone to meet up, then nobody ever would. I think having scheduling is necessary for this particular group idea (I'm not saying all groups would require the same).

Noticed you posted this on CC too CP but I'm break-even/marginal winner at 5nl atm so I don't qualify. Hope it works out, it's a great idea. I reckon I missed the boat by a month at most

EDIT: Also if you aren't prepared to or unable to commit a minimum of 4hours to study the game, I doubt a person can ever significantly improve unless they're some kind of poker prodigy.

EDIT 2: Does me being from the UK and being at uni (read lots of spare time) swing my 5nl-ness into consideration for the group? I'd love to be a part of it if that wasn't obvious. Obv not expecting anything tho.
