Hopefully this doesn’t come off as whiny or anything because that isn’t my intention here. I’m honestly just looking for help to get my game going back in the right direction and you guys definitely know more than me Struggling player looking to turn things around Also, if this belongs more in the beginner questions, feel free to move.

I’ve been playing poker quite a bit over the past two months, both live and online, cash and SnGs as well as MTTs here and there. And I LOVE it. Even on the raging moments, I find myself waking up thinking “I can do this” and getting back to work. However, I keep having a roller coaster of success and I’m wanting it to be more consistent. I turned a huge profit a few summers ago playing 25NL (no idea how I had success there but can barely have a winning session at 5NL) but haven’t been playing like that over the years. A big problem is that I feel like I’m self coaching, which probably isn’t a very good key to success. It’s more of a trial and error method (and most of the time it’s errors lol)

I think the majority of my problems occur post flop. I got some coaching on pre-flop strategy awhile back that I’ve stuck with sense. I’ve read books, tried practicing using equity calculators working with different board textures, using a simple C-Bet strategy to mixing up my C-Bet strategy, playing a wider range to playing a more narrow range, I feel like I get blasted any time I don’t have a monster hand. I’ve had my money taken three nights in a row to players with VPIPs over 70 which seems like the kind of fish we would want to target. I have success against the tighter players who play very ABC, but I can’t seem to handle aggression unless I just sit back and wait for the nuts, which becomes very obvious and tough to extract value with.

People often say “post some hands” and then I get very linear answers for that specific hand. Part of it may be that I’m just running a bit cold, my last five big all ins in cash games have had eq over 50% and I’ve only won one of them. A few nights ago in an MTT I was all in as a >75% favorite 9 times and only won 2 of them. So that may be what is standing out as well

I’m just needing advice on where to look to improve and how. I have messed around some with Flopzilla but I don’t think I REALLY know what I’m doing with it. I would love to know how you guys find ways to improve with those types of apps and anything else you guys have. I’m all ears!

I would suggest getting some coaching from Paul Regan. He has a facebook page "RegiTime Microstakes Poker Group" that you can join. He creates alot of Youtube content with hand analysis. The cost for coaching is very reasonable. He specializes in helping you play better post flop. His coaching has helped me bring everything I've read together.

Also I would check out Alton Hardin's books and courses. He also specializes in helping microstakes players. He just started a subscription service. He also has alot of free content.

Posting hands here, I've learned a ton from that. There are some really solid players that post in the Micro-Small Stakes.

I will echo "post some hands," but it goes farther than that. Read the other posts in the forum and say what you think. You will learn a lot just by thinking about the hand and reasoning things through, and you will learn a lot from the reactions of other posters.

Read some books. I am particularly fond right now of Peter Clarke's The Grinder's Manual which emphasizes micro-to-small-stakes 6max NLHE. It is a little bit pricey (I got mine on Kindle for US$57), but it is well worth the money. It is an excellent introduction and exploration of how to think about playing NLHE, and includes emphases both on balance and exploitation.

Study the game. Whether it is reading books, watching instructional videos, participating in the forums, reviewing your own play, or something else, it is a good idea to work away from the tables on developing your game and your thought processes. If you are still just beginning to learn, it is a good idea to spend as much time on study, thinking about the game, discussing it with others, reviewing your play, etc., as you spend on actually playing.
