Yes, if it's an unknown you can go ahead and open ATC.
However, you're still going to run into actual people playing actual poker hands that would call, raise, float, all the stuff you don't want people doing if you are opening ATC. You'll also get some people get into a leveling war thinking you are opening ATC simply because you guys are unknown.
- The point is that it's not a bullet proof strategy
However, and this is the key thing, you can never get away with it for long. Yes, the first 1 or 2 times it'll probably get there, winning a few blinds, but then once they recognize what you're doing and start 3betting you, floating the flop, etc etc it's better to tighen up that range a bit.
So yeah, it's a helpful strategy vs 2 unknown for an orbit or two, but with the hundreds of thousands of hands you'll be playing, you'll soon find yourself running out of situations where you face unknowns.
Bottom line is that it's a good principle to incorporate into your game, but it's not a sustainable strategy. Anyone who tries coaching you for outliers instead of looking at regular play probably shouldn't be coaching.
