I guess I worded that wrong.
What I wanted to say is, that against his preflop calling range we probably won't do very well, if we bet, because all of our top pairs are crushed and he probably mainly folds worse hands.
If I give him a preflop calling range like this:
77-JJ,ATs-AQs,KQs,QJs,JTs,T9s,98s,ATo-AQo
The only worse hands I can see him calling are some of the pockets. Everything else he calls with will probably have us beat pretty easily.

The longer I think about it, the less sure about the right line on the flop I am.
Probably both checking behind and betting are ok, I guess
