Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

BB: 34.5 BB (VPIP: 62.50, PFR: 25.00, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 8)
UTG: 272 BB (VPIP: 25.00, PFR: 20.83, 3Bet Preflop: 7.14, Hands: 72)

CO: 143 BB (VPIP: 26.76, PFR: 22.54, 3Bet Preflop: 11.54, Hands: 72)

SB: 100 BB (VPIP: 50.00, PFR: 33.33, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 6)

SB posts SB 0.5 BB, BB posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has J J

fold, Hero raises to 3 BB, fold, fold, SB raises to 9 BB, BB calls 8 BB, Hero calls 6 BB

Flop: (27 BB, 3 players) 3 7 5
SB bets 14 BB, BB calls 14 BB, Hero calls 14 BB

Turn: (69 BB, 3 players) 6
SB checks, BB bets 11.5 BB and is all-in, Hero calls 11.5 BB, SB calls 11.5 BB

River: (103.5 BB, 3 players) K
SB checks, Hero checks,

One of the first hands in the session, so no reliable stats on the villains. Was I calling too much? Should I have folded, and if so, at which point?

Or maybe after SB bet on flop, I should have raised to 2/3 or 3/3 of the new pot, to make drawing to a straight too expensive?

You play it fine, folding anywhere makes no sense. Watch Doug Polk videos on youtube if you want to know how to think about poker because you are lost right now. From the way you approach poker (don't be too passive! raise or fold! make them pay when they're drawing!), it looks like you bought the same terrible book from 2005 that every new player seem to buy

Agree with Ojune. The hand was played very good. You should do some work with ranges.
It's a 3b pot and you should not be worried about a straight draw here(although they might ocasionally have 89s, 66 i think is a little ambitious to 3b oop(sb) or call a 3b when you are 35bb deep (bb), both are drawing very slightly vs your hand.
Raising doesn't accomplish more here, you will most likely get calls from better hands(this if he ever 3b TT in this spot, and he can anyways fold it), so QQ, KK, AA. And you are most likely to fold AK, AQ, KQ if he doesn't 3b you again otf and again you are in a bad spot.

1.You are not full stacked
2. You are playing 34.5BB effective your SPR in the 3bet pot is below 1

The flop shure as hell is no fold. Even though V is repping an overpair here in a 3bet pot. If we assume he is only cbetting his value range here it looks like this:

Board: 375
*******Equity*****Win*****Tie
MP2****41.79%**39.39%***2.39%*{ JdJs }
SB*****58.21%**55.82%***2.39%*{ 99+ }

Even against his value range you make a hughe +EV call because you only need 25%

Call on the flop commits you for the turn shove

Thank you all.

Ojune, you are right that I am lost. I didn't get that 2006 book, but I read quite a lot of articles online and Chen's "The Mathematics of Poker" (I know it's not useful for me, but I really like maths). I'm very confused what advice applies where.

I will check out Doug Polk. Would you say he is your favourite, or is he often recommended on the forum? Also, are his videos targeted as specific audience (such as micro-noobs)?

Bleaxxy, Bogserker - thanks. I think I will need to do some homework before I understand what you wrote ;-)

Well he's a world class player so one could assume he knows what he is talking about. His youtube videos are for everyone, he's not going into too many details. He also has a training website you might be interested in.
