It was funny the first time, but it's not even accurate because I own less Sperrys/boat shoes than a few people that post in this thread. And, I don't even really like any of those.

If I have a shirt that is half cotton half polyester will it shrink in the washing machine?
10-29-2011 , 02:14 PM
Dont buy polyester, it's crap.
10-29-2011 , 02:45 PM
ya, polyester does not make bitches wet imo

h&m have brought back cotten stretch button ups for $30. decent chance i'll buy one cause h&m shirts fit better than anything else, but the material is typically really ****ty. the fine cotton stretch shirts feel much better, and $30 is still real cheap.

Yeah ok but still, will it shrink or not?

If I buy 100% cotton shirt I can't wash em in washing machine right? I mean I can but they'll surely shrink right?
10-29-2011 , 04:50 PM
I don't think so. I was always under the impression cotton only shrank the first time you washed it and that most cloths came pre-shurnk.

That being said I have zero experience with this so I could be wrong.

I have been reading this thread lately and respect the good advice. I have some job interviews coming up in the future. For the closest one my network advised that I go with a jacket and tie and I got the feeling a suit would be overkill but he left it pretty ambiguous. I have never met the interviewers but it will be over a casual lunch for an engineering job. The others a suit would most likely not be overkill. As a former poker player my wardrobe and knowledge is much better suited to nightlife and I don't exactly know what is appropriate.

I basically need everything. Appropriate shoes, appropriate pants, appropriate dress shirt, appropriate tie, appropriate coat, etc. My budget is like Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Hugo Boss range. I would go above if the value was right and obviously below if the value was right. Suggestions?

100% cotton will only shrink if you either suck at using the washing machine for cotton clothes or it is low quality. It really shouldn't shrink that much.

So you've always paid someone to do your laundry or do you still live with your mom?

a suit is almost never overkill in the context of job interviews. i don't know what kind of position you're interviewing for, but at the very, very least you should have on a suit minus the tie. if you get there and you're interviewer is in a polo and jeans and makes a comment on your attire, i'd just say something like "well, my grandfather roll around in his grave if he saw me interview for an important job without a suit" or something along those lines.

anyway, what to wear:

suit: do you live in a major city? if so, you'll have some good options. with your price range you're gonna have to buy an off-the-rack suit so it is absolutely necessary to get your suit properly tailored. a $300 suit that fits properly >>> a $3k suit that doesn't. i routinely spend ~$100 in adjustments, to give you an idea. this is an investment -- you'll always have use for a good suit so don't cheap out here.

i'm a huge advocate of club monaco's suits. for the price point ($500 or so) they are just about as good as it gets. if you live in a hick city, then you're probably gonna have to go with what's available at macy's like hugo boss or something like that (which isn't terrible either).

if you're looking to spend ~1k then i'd suggest something like brooks brothers 1818 collection -- fitzgerald cut if you're in shape or madison if you're a fat.

your first suit has to be either navy or gray but i'd get blue. whatever you do, do not get black and don't get anything with pinstripes. no matter what you see/hear, black suits are inappropriate unless you're at a funeral or winning an oscar.

for shoes, i think the worst "good" shoe you can get is allen edmonds. i think the park avenue is their best captoe and that's probably a good first shoe for soeone starting out their career. i wouldn't recommend anything worse than allen edmonds but if you do, just make sure you don't buy anything with a square toe or anything with a rubber sole. again, inappropriate (and lolworthy). when you buy your shoes ask the salesman for a matching belt. brown shoes for navy suit, black for gray.

shirt: keep it simple. just get white for the interview and worry about the rest later. if you're not wearing a tie then get something with a little action, like this: http://www.brooksbrothers.com/IWCatP...=&sectionsize=.

I am not too aware of all the American brands, I know that Allen Edmonds is "glorified" over at Styleforum, so they seem like a very good choice. I would however go for black shoes no matter which suit color you choose (navy or charcoal, definitely no black as disko said). Black shoes understate the outfit more. I prefer brown shoes as well, because they are more of an eye-catcher, but I think for first interviews black is preferable.

Get a coat, you wont get 100% cashmere for that price range, but a good new wool one.

Depends if he wants a long coat or mid-length. I think he'd be able to find a mid-length for under $1000.

Cashmere or new wool? I assume cashmere.

If he gets one for under 1k, then it's his choice. I prefer long, but that's me.

Great post thanks.

Unfortunately the shopping around here compared to a real city is complete ****. There is a Brooks Brothers but no Club Monaco. Basically what I have to work with is Macy's, Nordstrom Rack, Saks Off 5th, Nordstrom.

As far as build I would say "athletic." Extra trim fit is always a disaster in the upper body. Regular fit always looks kinda sloppy and sub-optimal. Euro fits it depends on the brand and how much I have or haven't been eating/exercising in the last couple months. Best fit is generally fitted Armani and the fitted versions of the brands I mentioned in OP. Armani doesn't fit and look 3-5x better and I'm an unemployed relative busto now.

As far as shoes. Is a wingtip on the more flashy side gonna fly? I like those Allen Edmonds but am basically asking would that $325 be better spent somewhere else?

Cashmere. I have a long one and that was about $2k but I also bought two mid-lengths and those were only $700 and $800. You figure with inflation they would be more now since I've had them for a couple of years but at the same time retail in the States is apparently hurting so lots of stuff is discounted.

Cashmere for warmth is amazing. You'll have no issues even in very cold locations.

wingtips are fine too. the problem with wingtips: they tend to be more expensive than captoes, and since your #1 shoe priority for shoes should be getting a brown pair and a black pair, it's silly to spend more on a wingtip when you could spend a bit more and get 2 pairs of captoes.

edit: and when i say gray i really mean charcoal. and blue = navy obv
10-30-2011 , 12:14 PM
captoes are also much more versatile than wingtips.

wingtips are good for a 4th or 5th pair choice but not for a first pair.

When I go home to my Mom's during Winter Break I bought this last year and it kept me very warm. I was just going for warmest thing possible though over style.

Also, for others....I need a pair of shoes for going out. I usually will just wear a decent button down with dark jeans as it fits the places I usually go the best. I have always been sort of a "sneakerhead." I have ~ 40 pairs of SNEAKERS and most of them are limited edition and kind of niche models but I am clueless when it comes to nicer leather shoes. I have a pair of black dress shoes I wear with a suit when I have to and then a pair of brown dress shoes I war with brown dress pants for other outings but I need some suggestions for something that goes with dark jeans.
