I was comparing the $600 Venetian/PHo events to the Colossus. Colossus is 5k starting stack with 30 minute levels on day 1. The recs know by now that they aren't winning a bracelet so I'm sure plenty of them would rather spend their $565 for a 20k starting stack with 40 minute levels (most Venetian events) on day 1 (and still $500k/$1m GTD prize pools).

It's hard for a rec player to get much value from the WSOP anymore on these events with all the competition out there. The rest of Vegas has caught up.

The Venetian convention center room they're playing in is clearly a downgrade to playing in their poker room, but I still prefer it to the ugly monstrosity that is the Rio. That's not even accounting the enjoyment for food options during break, not dealing with the Rio parking mess, break mess, food mess, or having to be in the Rio at all. That might just be my opinion, though. I can't wait till the WSOP leaves the Rio some day. I hope Caesars sells the Rio and either moves the WSOP to CP or PHo or sells the WSOP, too, and someone like Venetian or Wynn buys it.

What is the field size of the PH $40k and the Aria tournament. I assume you meant the $400 Aria tournament. The $240 Aria tournament is to late IMO and the 20 min levels isn't great.

IMO field size makes up a lot for the WSOP 1pm Deepstack. The structure is not all that great but at least it starts with 20k chips and 30 minute levels.

If going by last year the field should increase the further it gets in the series, though maybe not as much as last year. I am going to be there about the same time as I was last year and it had 1000+ players a few times I played. I expect this year will still be at least 750. No clue what the PH $40k will get but I expect no where close to that number.

This year I am not entering Dailies besides for 1 day that I have nothing else scheduled. I wouldn't mind playing at a different tournament on the Strip, but Im afraid the field sizes are just to small. Please correct me if I am wrong as I would love to save the uber cost of going to RIO.

Re: WSOP Daily Tournaments

Field size is not really a major component of ROI. The main components of ROI are the rake and the skill of the field.

The only reason ROI gets a bump at all with larger field sizes is because you have the potential for much larger payouts in a small amount of time. For example, you could take 2nd in a 1,000 player field and get 140x your buy-in over two 13 hour days (26 hours total). If you played in 200 player fields, it would take far longer than 26 hours to get 140x your buy-in. However, your variance is so much higher in larger field events. You can play a WSOP event of 1,000 players and finish in 10th place and get 7x your buy-in. In the meantime, you could get the same return on your buy-in in a 100 player field by finishing in 4th or 5th place.

I don't put in enough tournament volume to chase life-changing money in high variance large fields. I'm more than happy playing in a 200-300 player field if it has a good structure, good rake and a soft field. In my case, playing in 1,400 player fields and finishing in 20th place for 5x my buy-in after 2.5 days of play is a tough pill to swallow. I think some folks focus on the large field events a little bit too much and end up quitting poker or busting their bankroll when they realize just how huge of variance it is to be profitable in them.

Re: WSOP Daily Tournaments

760 entrants into the $250 yesterday. Probably thanks to a lot of colossus bust outs. But if I remember correctly, last year this deepstack was pulling in over 1,000 entrants on colossus days.

Edit: and yep I look it up and there were 1,363 entrants the Monday after colossus last year

Re: WSOP Daily Tournaments

Thanks for the post HawkesDave. I am still pretty new to poker and this has given me something else to think about.

I like the idea of winning big one day so am always chasing that dream. This is why I like a bigger prize pool. I am a rec player with a dream. lol.

This year I am focused on tournaments with as many SPTS as I can find within my budget as I am learning. So far everyday has a 94+spts tournament in my price ranged but for one day. This will be a new type of tournament for me as all the others Iv entered last year and locally have had low spts.

You may want to consider mixing it up. A large field, with high Spts and a low rake is going to bring in a ton of pros, and tourneys with high SPts benefits the pro more than the rec player as it decreases variance. A low Spts tourney, like a turbo, gives a rec player a better chance in a small sample vs. a strong pro because they can run well in a shorter sample size and overcome the skill advantage. Sure, over 1000 turbos, the pro will still end up far ahead, but if you're chasing a dream you should mix in some situations where you're not putting yourself in spots where you're regularly playing against crushers.

A nice middle point, which I'm playing myself, is the Binions Main Event. $1000 buy-in, 150ish SPoints and a field expected to be around 400ish.

On the flipside, I'll probably play in one or two Aria $400 dailies or a PH $40k in a day, because the fields are soft and I'll go home happy if I can bank myself a $4-6k cash during the week.

Agree somewhat, although I think parking is easier at Rio than Venetian, and it's much easier to get to and through. I like the multi-route access into the place as opposed to the congestion (and sometimes flooding) on Koval.

Re: WSOP Daily Tournaments

RIO 1:00 Deep Stack is first choice on Thursday since I have to be at Rio anyway to register for Friday Seniors event. Structure is fine and not having 1000+ entries is not a problem. Maybe get done before 4:00 a.m. that way. It is fun to be @ Rio with the WSOP atmosphere. Get a chance to browse the merch. Wish WSOP were somewhere else, but it is still fun.

Playing one bracelet event -- have to give it a chance and Seniors is best field. Bust-out options are Venetian and PH. Little bit of everything, but only one huge field event is enough.

The Rio parking is really better than most to be honest. You don't have to go to some parking garage that's a 15 min walk to the poker action like PH, Caesars, Aria, Venetian, etc and then have to pay 10 bucks for the "privilege". Not to mention it's free at the Rio and no parking validation hassle like Wynn.

The food options are pretty crap for poker players at just about every venue. What the Rio has at the Poker kitchen is edible enough plus you can always walk (run) to get a slice of pizza or sandwich at the main casino. Still better than the $9 I paid for half of a ****ty sandwich I bought at Wynn last time I played there.

Have you ever played at PHo in the Goliath series? It's a terrible venue. Worst out of the other 6-7 Vegas summer poker series going on.

Re: WSOP Daily Tournaments

Finished the 1PM daily in 21st on Monday. It was the biggest crap shoot for 28K I have ever played. Decent amount of play early, but most stacks had 5-10 BB when down to 3 tables. I hate that these become such a luck fest when it matters because these are a great value with the super soft fields. Not sure there is any way around it with them having to finish in one day.

LOL, true. It makes you appreciate the Rio.

The last couple of years they have really shown they know what they're doing. The Colossal should have been a disaster, but they handled it fairly well, and the second year had no serious problems at all that I heard about. Compared to 10 years ago the WSOP is SO polished, although sometimes I miss the old days when everything was in the Amazon Room.

Re: WSOP Daily Tournaments

Yes anyone heard of a Daily Deepstack not completing in one day?

The Structure Sheet this year says that the TD reserves the right to pause it overnight if it is running long. I was thinking of playing some on days when I could not make the following day.

I understand it has never happened, so I wouldn't worry about that. Of course, you may want to avoid having substantial commitments the next day because you could be playing til 8am if you make it all the way to the end!

Re: WSOP Daily Tournaments

I played one a year or two ago that has 2000 entries and it finished in a day. They start even earlier now so it's unlikely that any would go more than a day.

Re: WSOP Daily Tournaments

Define 'better'.

Structures score the same: 92 S-Points
Venetian takes more off the top: 14.5% to 12.3%
Aria tournament area not getting great reviews.
Free parking at the Venetian.

DDS 1pm starting to gain traction...over 1000 entries last few days...almost 1100 yesterday. I think with all the seniors events going on this weekend, the numbers should be good (as they bust out).

Re: WSOP Daily Tournaments

As an alternative to the 4 pm, with a better structure, look at the Orleans 11 am $150 $25k gtd. They had almost 300 entries today. The structure is nice, 57 S points. I managed to nurse a fairly short stack through 4 levels to get to the mincash. Be sure to reg early though, they tend to run short of dealers and you might end up as an alternate like I did. Even so, I got in with 100 bb, so plenty of play.
