No regular security that I'm aware of in across-the-street hotels. They're generally considered safe, although about six months ago an older couple returning from the casino were confronted by a gunman who fatally shot the wife in a botched robbery attempt.

Attack occurred at night in parking lot of Residence Inn, which is close to Days Inn.

Three locals were arrested, including the accused shooter, several months ago.

Not trying to cause alarm, but it makes sense to be wary and take appropriate precautions ... just like any at any casino.

J Bieber-

Thanks a bunch for taking the time to post the info. It's pretty helpful- I do have a couple additional questions..

1. Obv you need a rewards card and will need to load $$ on it. Will you be able to buy in or register for a WSOP event using the funds on the card? It would be pretty convenient to just put all cash on the card upon arrival and be able to use it for WSOP and/or regular casino poker room. Just curious.

2. Is there any fitness facility onsite available? I think it was mentioned that it was being renovated but wasn't sure if a couple treadmills, etc are available in another portion of the casino.

3. I think I read the event center table breakdown will something like 75 total and 60/15 tourney/cash. Any chance any of the cash will be SNG?

4. Any issues with having cooler in room? Can drinks be walked around with in casino, hotel area, etc?

Thanks again -

One other question....how is the temperature in the poker room and also the event center...normal, cold, etc.

Thanks -

1. There is a rule that if WSOP-C is at a Caesar's Property (including Harrah's) you must get a Total Rewards Card to play in the WSOP-C. Separately, if you play on the PokerPro tables, you must load your card with cash to be used in the game. Although I am not 100% sure, I don't believe that cash loaded on the card for PokerPro can be directly used to register for WSOP-C events (although you can go to a cashier at any time and withdraw funds, and then use them to register for WSOP-C).

2. I would call the hotel directly and ask them the about fitness facility. I have stayed there about 5 times, but don't recall. Typically I have used the grand staircase in the front of casino to get some exercise between hands (go down the escalator and walk up the stairs, and repeat until done).

4. Bringing a cooler into the poker room or special events center? I don't know but they may not like that. Not sure if you can walk drinks around since the casino is somewhat separated from poker room and other 2nd floor stuff. Also, each major restaurant (like Brio next door) is separately owned/leased and not sure if they have their own liquor license. But if you are on Casino floor, you can take drinks around to other places on casino floor, but that is probably not what you are asking. There are security guards at every connection between casino floor and 2nd floor stuff, since children are allowed on 2nd floor (except for poker room).

Fitness center re-locaed to the Beech room. 2nd floor. Go up escalator from front desk
Take a leff. On the left. Pool/hot tub closed.

Use one of the self check-in kiosks. Much faster. Swipe credit card/reward card, choose room, coose number of room keys, done in 1-2 minutes never a line.

Coolers in room are OK. Most people do it. Hit or miss If you can take it on the floor.Beer not a problem, liquor a little harder. Poker on second floor. Much less security to get by.

I would say temps in poker room are slightly cool, but not cold. But I have never been in Special Events Center. If you are sitting at a PokerPro table in poker room, there is one seat at each table where the computer fan exhaust is located, than can get a little warm. As with most poker rooms, layering is key, so you can adjust if needed.

I didn't realize he was talking about hotel room. Yes that is OK, and IIRC they have fridge in the hotel rooms. But you cannot buy alcohol in Cherokee NC outside of Casino, so if you bring it with you into facility, make sure to not make it visible to anyone.

Marriott Fairfield Inn right across street from Casino. The victim parked toward the back near some trees that was not well-lighted. Although crime in Cherokee is normally very low, make sure you stay away from dark areas late at night.

My "comment" was more about "newer poker places not accustom to poker players bringing backpacks etc." I don't recall if they have a rule like that, but I suspect worse case is that they just inspect it. Not sure what you intend to put in your backpack, and maybe they have rules against bringing in food, drinks, etc (I have no idea).

In the current poker room, bottled water is free and you don't need a waitress to get it (just walk over to fridge). Not sure if they will have free water in the special events center next door where WSOP-C will be held.
I've brought those Nike bags with two drawstrings in to Cherokee without any problem, never checked, I only bring snacks , hat , phone, and stuff, like a manpurse

The land is on a Native American reservation (duh). The area is generally quiet and safe. The surrounding motels are somewhat crappy but acceptable, however they charge a premium, especially on weekends due to casino traffic. Unimpressive but inexpensive restaurants as well as your standard fast food chains are all within a 5 minute drive. Only McDonalds is 24/7.

Casino:

It has fairly recently been renovated and always kept very clean. Perhaps nicer than any CET property in the world. Alcohol isn't free, there is last call nightly at 2. The majority of the workforce, including the restaurant wait staff aren't as seasoned as your traditional Vegas casino. To be honest there are some real dimwits working there, but everyone tends to be quite nice unlike the jaded employees of AC and Vegas. If you look to be under the age of 40, prepared to be carded by security, maybe often. Bear in mind the entire 2nd floor is NON-Smoking. The poker room and convention/show area are upstairs on 2nd floor.

Hotel:

Harrah's Cherokee is unique is that it lacks any local competition. As a result, there is always full occupancy in the hotel on weekends. It is virtually impossible to book a room unless you are vip. Usually only high level diamond and seven star guests get rooms. The gym and pool are under renovation until the summer. There is an arcade by the hotel elevators for the kids.

Parking:

There are two self parking decks (free). One on casino side and the other for the hotel side. Everything is connected. The casino valet charges upwards of $15 while the hotel valet is free. The casino valet entrance leads to stairs closest to the poker room. There is always plenty of parking in the decks and some outside as well.

Casino food:

Food court
Paula Deen's Kitchen
Cafe w/ Starbucks
Brio
Ruth's Chris
Asian place
Buffet
Diamond Lounge (for Diamond or 7 stars)
Essence Lounge (a sports bar with bar food)
A couple gift shops which sell snacks

The only late night food options are asian place and food court (24/7).

Games:

There are regular pit games and plenty of slots. The pit games can be full to the extent of waiting lines on busy weekends. Cherokee prints money. The lines to cages can be ridiculously long and is segregated into normal, diamond, and seven stars. There are ticket cashing and change making machines to help with this. The pit dealers are mostly new to dealing and tend to make mistakes/are slow, which can be an advantage for the player.

Poker Room:

Located upstairs between Brio and convention/box office. You must have a total rewards card AND set up a poker account (create a sn) at the poker cage and fund it before playing any PokerPro tables. You put yourself on the waitlist by swiping in the terminal next to entrance. Remember that alcohol isn't free and waitress service can be quite sparse and slow. There is a cooler with free waters in the poker room. The WSOPc events will obviously be held in the convention area next door.

Tips:

- If you have to pee sitting down, the downstairs restrooms have more stalls than upstairs.
- Get the pizza in the food court if you want to eat the worst tasting pizza of your life and maybe have to make a run to the downstairs restrooms.
- The only thing remotely resembling "nightlife" is the Essence Lounge, anywhere.
- Quickest way for smoke break is take escalator down to first floor.
- It can be faster to walk downstairs to the beverage stations for a drinks when waitresses are mia.
- If driving at night, be prepared for random fog attacks. "Smoky Mountains"? Also watch out for deer and bears.
- Don't expect to find any working girls in case you were looking to treat yourself after a min cash.

I hope this guide has been informative and helpful and hope that locals of other stops post similar guides prior to their corresponding series commencements.

ty for your post, well done. the bolded is very good to know

Thanks for the correction on Fairfield Inn not Residence Inn, Roger. You've provided lots of good info on both Cherokee threads.

You cannot buy alcohol in Cherokee NC, which is governed by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (ie, Indian Reservation). That applies to by the drink, and also a 6-pack of beer at a grocery store, etc. The only exception is inside the casino, and they didn't even allow it there when casino first opened. Not sure about local towns nearby. I would buy whatever you need before you get to Cherokee, which shouldn't be a problem since everyone will have to drive to Cherokee. I would advise that if you bring it into your hotel room, you be discreet about it.

I know a lot about the robbery/murder at the Fairfield, because I had a hotel reservation at the Fairfield about 1 week after the crime. I did a lot of research, but I ultimately decided to keep the reservation and stay there as planned.

When I arrived, they still had the area yellow-taped off in the parking lot where the crime occurred near the trees. Scary thing is that I have stayed at that hotel about 5 weekends previously, and had always parked near the trees where the crime occurred, so my car would not get too much sun during the day when I was in the casino. Since then, when I stay at Fairfield, I now always park close to the street out in the open. BTW, the crime occurred about 10 or 11 PM, not all that late at night. The fact that they were an elderly couple driving a Cadillac probably did not help them. Fortunately, the scumbag criminal has been captured.

WSOP-C official rules state that electronic devices are allowed up until "in the money." However, people who have played at other recent WSOP-C events say that the rule is only enforced at the final table. I think it is a TV thing, since it detracts from TV coverage if people have headphones on and are not talking or paying attention.

Drive over Soco Gap to Maggie Valley ABC store for hard booze would probably be closest (Watch opening hours and not open on Sundays). For beer you can drive to a quick-stop in M/V or down Hwy 441S to Sylva if you want to go to a grocery store. (Grocery stores are not allowed in Maggie Valley due to zoning restrictions. Stupid.) Either way you are looking at a 30 to 45 min round trip, depending on which way you go.

Also no beer sales before noon on Sunday anywhere in NC. Stupid blue laws.
