My issues with the Colossus is it's basically a turbo, and I prefer longer, deeper tournaments.

This year I think I'm hitting the Marathon for $2.6k instead. Also Goliath and Grand series events at PHo and Golden Nugget (as I've done the last couple of years, as well)

That said, if the structure of the Colossus suits your game, can't beat the value.
+1
played the last two years and won't be playing again, this one is little too much of turbo on day 1

I am in town 6/11-6/17 and there is nothing that really appeals to me at the WSOP during that time. I am opting for the $600 (400k gtd) @ The Venitian, I also plan on playing at least one Daily Deepstack. I am looking forward to PH and Wynn schedules being released soon so that I can finish my itinerary. Can't wait!

MGM is the only logical buyer for the WSOP at this point, and I think moving the event to Mandalay Bay makes a lot of sense. Hosting it at MGM Grand or Mirage could also be an option. Unfortunately MGM is pretty tied up at the moment, currently attempting to buy Sands Bethlehem (PA), ramp up National Harbor, and finish up on a big project in Macau.

I'll be surprised if WSOP gets sold in the next year...

5,000 Tier credit in a day (roughly putting $25,000 gross through a slot machine).

Sort of a random question.

I really want to play one of the Wsop events, something like the marathon or monster stack, maybe the main event. But, none of my friends are big poker players. I feel odd going over to Vegas from NJ by myself for a week or so, but is that pretty normal? Are many rec players by themselves?

All my other trips to Vegas has been with friends. Even if I do convince a couple of friends to go, I would essentially be by myself anyway 90% of the time since they won't be playing poker.

80% of your waking hours will be at a tournament table that would not include your friends anyway. The best you can hope for is late night in the room or catching a quick dinner.
WSOP- 2017 ? Quote

Yeah but most of the time you won't even be able to connect for the dinner. They have to be doing nothing exactly when your break starts because there isn't time to meet "around X o'clock". How often will someone be doing nothing, in Vegas?

Then, if you're sharing a room, your friend(s) will be loud and drunk at 4 or 5 am and not care that you have to wake up at 10:30 for a noon start the next day. Going with non-poker friends is a detriment.

It depends on your priorities. If you just want to go for the experience (I assume you have never been to Vegas for the WSOP), then you might want to invite your friends... it would be an experience for them too. As long as they're cool with the possibility that they might not be able to hang out with you a whole lot and your schedule will be very much up in the air, then there's no reason the group of you can't have a great time. And if your budget only allows for one ~$1500 tourney while you are out there for a week, then having friends around wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. You will either only be playing for a day or two, and would therefore have the rest of your time with your friends, or you'll have a really deep run, in which case I'm sure it would be exciting for both you and your friends.

However, if you are going out there for more than just the experience, or if your budget will allow for playing more than one tourney, then you might consider treating it more like a business trip. That doesn't mean you can't have any fun, but you'll be looking at it more from a competition standpoint than from an entertainment standpoint. Having non poker-playing friends around for things like that is doable, its just more difficult IMO, and can take your focus away from where it should be. There are so many great tournaments of all buy-in levels going on during the WSOP, at the Rio, Venetian, Wynn, PH, Aria, downtown, elsewhere, that you could certainly play poker virtually every day if you wanted to. And those kinds of trips are not typically conducive to hanging out with friends.

And to answer your question, I think the majority of "rec" players do go out to Vegas more or less by themselves. But even rec players will meet and/or recognize others in Vegas during that timeframe, so its not like you will be completely alone.

Thanks for this and the other replies above. Very helpful.

Yes, it would be the first time for me in Vegas for the Wsop. Good idea to potentially treat it as a business trip (just an expensive one vs other real business trips, which are free!) even though I'd be there for the experience as much as playing. And good to know many others would essentially be by themselves too.

When I play poker in NJ at a casino, I've learned it's much better generally to go by myself anyway, but those are day trips with an hour drive. Flying to Vegas for a week by myself seemed odd, but not much different than business trips as you suggested.

Ok - now just have to talk the wife into this plan for me to go alone!

I have done several 7-14 day trips to Vegas for WSOP alone. I've also had some where other poker player friends were there, though not traveling/rooming together. While nice to have friendly faces of course, it also can be a super hassle trying to meet up when Bob is still in the tourney, Shawn wants to play the 7pm Venetian, Josh is playing cash at Aria and Jan wants to play at the Nugget.

If I arrive on the 10th (day 1C) at around 11am-noon, what kind of line should I expect to register for the main event?

Late-reg now lasts forever, like up until the last level of the day I think, so I wouldn't worry too much about lines. You may find lines, but last year the cage got them moving pretty quickly.

Haven't been paying attention to the WSOP the last couple years..When did the 10,000 event stop being the championship of poker?

Now a 6 max is?

All of the $10,000 events are labeled Championship... for those game types and formats --- Stud, 6-Max, PLO.... but only the Main Event is called the World Championship.

The $50K event has been a "Players Championship" for some time now...this year, it happens to be listed as a six-max although it has been an eight-game mix instead of the $10K coin-flipament that is the Main Event. Had you looked at the structure sheet on the WSOP site, this would have been evident...

So 333 starting big blinds with 2 hour levels throughout is a "coin-flipament"?

What's your characterization of actual turbo events then?

Yeah for real. The main event is the deepest tournament at the WSOP. Nguyen and Josephy had both over 100 BBs at the start of the final table last year.

You obviously have to run good to outlast so many players but to call it a coin flipament is just completely inaccurate.

Good players realize their expectation in the Main Event probably more than in any other tournament in the world. With that said, look who won the Main Event last year. He's definitely not the best in the world

There has been a $50k mixed game event titled the Poker Players' Championship (PPC) for the last while. I believe it's been played as HORSE, 8game, and dealer's choice, and is currently 8game, which is a good mix of all the biggest limit and big bet games and, while still subject to all the usual variance that tournaments have, does often have an all-star final table. 8game is always played 6max so that's why it's listed as 6max.
