Why isn't the WSOP held in the Winter? Why isn't the WSOP held in the Winter?

It just seems to me that it would be better if it was held in the "Winter" when it's "cold" in Las Vegas. It's still "warm" not "hot", in "Winter" but "warm" in the "Winter" months. Alot of people have to work in the Spring/Summer so why not hold in WSOP in the "Winter"?

Thank you.

They get a lot of teachers that are off for the Summer to be dealers, and not just at the WSOP, but at all the Summer poker series.

I think it was originally held in the summer specifically because it's not a nice time to be in Las Vegas. It's something to draw tourists when they wouldn't ordinarily be busy.

A lot more people have vacation time in the summer than in the winter (with the exception of Thanksgiving/Christmas where most people want to be with their families). If you're going to be playing poker 12-16 hours/day, why do you care what the weather is anyway?

When they held it in fall in 2021 I couldn't go at all because of my work schedule. I was so glad they moved it back to summer this year and I could play again.

There are pros and cons to any season, but most of the people on the planet work less during summer in the northern hemisphere. So if they are trying to hold it when more people are available, June/July is far better than January.

Are you sure about that?

And I mean it as a question not a joke.

Well, some 90% of humans live in the northern hemisphere. Pretty sure about that. As for the work/vacation time I guess I’m going by what I see in the US. I don’t see why it would be very different in Europe, though I suppose I can’t speak for Asia. In any case, the vast majority of WSOP participants are still from the US.

If rec work schedules were the only factor, the WSOP would probably be best held a month later in July/August. But I’m sure there are other factors at play.

Because of what you're missing out on by playing poker all day? Where I'm from, summer is the best time of year. I'd never want to miss out on beautiful summer days by being in Vegas playing poker all day. Thus I never go during the series even though I spend months every year in Vegas during winter.

In any case, that's my reason for wishing it was during winter.

But for people who live and work in Las Vegas, it's the opposite. They don't want to be outdoors at all during the summer, so they don't miss out on anything by playing poker all day.

I like being outdoors in Vegas all year round, except for that monsoon season in August

But all things considered, I like when it’s held and makes most sense

I agree with op. I feel the WSOP should be held in the winter or fall. It’s way too hot in vegas when the series is held. It’s painful walking outside for any long distance (think 15+ min) due to the heat.

I find Vegas much more enjoyable during the winter months.

I agree, but the people who run the WSOP don't want you to be walking outdoors, they want you to stay indoors at the same casino for your whole visit. So the heat is a feature, not a bug.

Problem is millions of non poker visitors believe same thing . And it is fact.

Poker players will go to Las Vegas any time WSOP is being offered.

Millions of Non poker players will choose time suitable ,enjoyable and comfortable to them .

Summers are brutal in Vegas. Conventions don't favor that time of year so the WSOP fills up those summer hotel rooms when they otherwise would be vacant. There is that thing with teachers being available to work as dealers too.

Can you explain to us the significance behind your name, WSOPeddie? I am intrigued, albeit disturbed, by your name, "peddie". If I'm not mistaken, peddie is short for something that is every parents' nightmare.

And GO!!

Or you could split it as WSOP eddie so it makes more sense.

Really? Good attempt at humor anyway.

Pretty sure when Binions owned the WSOP it was in April. When Caesars bought the WSOP and Horseshoe brand, they changed the location and time of year. The reason for the time of year change was thought to be centered around increasing hotel occupancy rates in a lower occupancy season. Don't really see them changing it.

I think it started as May event in 70’s.
Then changed to April 3rd week and since 2005 it is in June

Since the poker boom, I think it’s more about scheduling during a slow time for conventions. If some entity like CES were to come in and say they wanted to have a 200,000 person convention in the middle of the summer, I guarantee you the WSOP would be moved to some other part of the year in a nanosecond to make room.

Yeah but it will be billed as “you spoke, we listened!”

But then if that group left we’d immediately go back to when it is now
