I will be entering the 1.5k Limit O8 event at the WSOP this year and wanted to know more about what the tournament was like, especially the field.

Is it a soft tournament or lots of pros in it? I'm thinking that since it is a much less popular game, there will be better players.

Also, how did you the structure of the tournament to be?

From what it looks like, the structure looks pretty good with 40 min levels for the first day and the limits don't seem to jump too much from level to level.

Please share any experiences that you have with the limit O8 tournament!

I have never played the $1500 O8 but I have played the HORSE and 8game. Generally there are going to be a lot of weak players in the $1500 mixed game events, at least at the beginning. The cream rises as you run deep and it will get tough, but day 1 will be an enjoyable day playing with a bunch a loose players, and maybe the occasional pro who is just playing properly tight anyways.

use the early levels to play lots of pots and see how other play. You will see 4-6 people to see the flop.

then pray your hand holds up in the later levels.

I have played stud 8 and horse 1500 events and there are a lot of weak players. You should be fine, though of course it gets tougher toward the end. One benefit is many players play whatever the event is even if they aren’t good at the games so that benefits you. You also get a lot of,play and it’s fun so you should enjoy it. Good luck.

I haven't played limit O/8, but play the $1500 PLO8 regularly and sometimes the Omaha mixed. Like any tourney, it's hit and miss but I would generally say that the skill level is no different than the $400/$800 buy in events at other venues. I suspect that is equally or more true for limit.

I've had a table of loose, clueless donkeys and I've also played only 2 tables over two days that consisted of 4 or 5 of the final table members, including Erik Seidel (who I outlasted, but his rebuy went deep). Last fall there were two mixed game bracelet winners at my table, but they actually weren't hard to play against in early stages (tight/predictable).

Tip - If you make a day 2 spend some time checking your competitors on Hendon Mob.

Played this exact event in 2019 and had a blast. Players are much more relaxed than NLH euro crushers, and it can be fairly soft too depending of the tables. Best structure I played.

I played a Omaha8 tourney during the circuit at Ballys in March. I was bummed to learn after I sat down that it was a limit tourney, not plo8 like I thought it was going to be. Felt like an idiot for just assuming. My bad, can't believe I made such a stupid mistake. I soon found out two others at my table made the same mistake. Also a couple guys at my friend's table. My point being that there's probably going to be quite a few people that have no clue what they're doing...

You should definitely check Hendon Mob if you make day 2 but don't let it intimidate you.
I have played this event and the HORSE event. Had two deep runs in the HORSE event.

When you first sit down and are talking to the other players, tell them you have never played this game before. Then ask, because this is Omaha 8, do I need to have an 8 in my hand to win the pot?
You should get some great reactions.

Day 1 there are a lot of weak players. Most don't make day 2.

One advantage you have if you make day 2 is that as an amateur, the pros will under rate you. Use this to your advantage by avoiding marginal hands.

On day 2, I have had mostly pros at my table. In fact, I have had Phil Hellmuth at my table twice. Once directly on my right. Glad I knew it before I got to the table and it was not a surprise. I was part of one of his famous rants because I would raise him if I had a premium hand (which were pretty much the only hands I was playing on day 2 with a healthy chip stack). Be patient and pick your spots wisely.

I can't stress enough the importance of eating and sleeping well. Stay sharp and good luck.

I played the event in 2019 and generally agree with the above. Day 1 was pretty soft/friendly with only one recognizable pro at my table. Day 2 was drawn with a couple young pros who raised/3 bet a high percentage of hands pre. Eventually had a to pick a couple hands and go with them and neither worked out...

Scott Clements is always at my table when I play this event.

Don't overfold the flop, be sticky.

The new structure on ALL the mixed $1500 while they appear more solid are really not.

2022 (and 2021) 25,000 starting stack
Day 1: 10 hours of play (15 levels, 40 mins each)
Day 2: Level 16, Starting Limits 2000/4000 (assume 10 levels to match old, 1 hour each) - 12.5/6.25 BB
Day 3: Level 26, Starting Limits 20,000/40,000 - 1.25/0.625 BB

2019 10,000 starting stack
Day 1: 10 hours of play (10 levels, 60 mins each)
Day 2: Level 11, Starting Limits 500/1000 - 20/10 BB
Day 3: Level 21, Starting Limits 5000/1000 - 2/1 BB

Structures have gotten way worse (still good, but more variance). Many 2021 mixed events were ending early evening on Day 3's. <2021 would go very late into the night on Day 3 and some had 4 days. The 2021 Stud event reached the final table and stopped at 6 players by the end of Day 2. This fact really made me hope they would fix some of the $1500 structures for this year. Something in between the early evening ends and requiring a 4th day.

$2500 Mixed Events still same great structure as previous

Interesting stuff. I recall now a fair amount of grumbling that the money bubble in the 2019 $1,500 FLO8 event I played didn't burst til about 8 pm on Day 2.

Funny, I've played two O8 bracelet events and he was at my table in both haha.
