How wasn't his hand dead in the 8's hand? I've always been under the impression that if a player acts out of turn that their action can't change if the action in front of them doesn't change, no?

IMHO, it depends pretty specifically on what he did. Regardless, I would always call the floor in a situation like that even if I didn't think his hand was dead because morally his hand should obv be dead and you might get a bad ruling.
