The reality is that A LOT of the raisins are there for a good time. They are not structure or rake nits. We have the funds to play with and are more apt to look at the events that mesh with our schedule. In some instances, where focus in placed on any element of the tournament, it is about how the payout up top will look...and a $400 entry is going to put more up top, obviously, than a $165 event.
The only thing I have ever seen worse than the play in a Seniors event is the play in the women's events. What DaFarginNuts points out with regard to the ace-raggers is absolutely correct, with a healthy dose of the flush chasers who will call ANY raise with their Q2ss. In both instances, much of the field is less serious about poker from a skill standpoint and is looking for the social experience. The $400 is not a huge sum...its basically play money when you get to be our age.
That being said, there is a more enjoyable day when you have people who actually TALK instead of sitting their in their hoodie while wearing headphones.
