It used to be that the best time to book was on a Tuesday, 50-60 days prior. I’m not sure that holds anymore because all prices are adjusted nearly real-time in response to demand and other factors, like fuel costs. So it really comes down to how many people are interested in the same flights you are.
As a rule of thumb, I wouldn’t book anything domestic more than about 4 months out. Once you get in that zone, if you see a reasonable price, jump on it. If not, wait. You are just as likely to get the lowest possible fair as it gets closer than you are to pay a steep premium. You just might not get the exact seating arrangement you want.
