Here is my argument, given that I feel like I have a good grasp on the economy at foxwoods over the years, and how it has changed.
I believe that live players, and even moreso the foxwoods crowd, have a budget that they adhere to, that a 2-5 nl player will play 500$ tourneys, 5-10 players play 1k tournaments, and so on. Over the years 2 major things have changed at foxwoods, one is that the % of NL tables running as 5-10(5-5)+ has dropped significantly, and tournament series have been placed all over the calendar reducing satellite qualifiers. There is 1 minor thing I think is also hurting, which is that they started spreading non ACT SNGs, which gets to the overall problem.
The thing that has always made foxwoods huge was the Steps, called ACTs at foxwoods. When I started there they used to run these ACTs (2 levels of satty SNG, then a target mtt mega sat every 2 weeks) in may/june to qualify people for the big WPT in october, I vividly remember these being a huge deal, and players would commonly sit in a game trying to win X$ for the mega.
Foxwoods now has 5 or 6 tournament series over the year where there were once 2, as well as a deeper daily tournament schedule, all while the average expendable income in the area has decreased. 5-10 games rarely run on weeknights instead of around the clock, and 2-5 has frequently become the biggest game in the room, with few players considering 1k a reasonable buyin for their financial circumstances.
My opinion is that a 5k main with 500$ megas will draw substantially more money from the cash games into the MTTs, with a slightly lower overall prize pool but a softer event that is more sustainable for the local poker economy
