As far as scheduling goes, WSOP's standard excuse for the delay is "have to get regulatory permission" or words to that effect. Really, for the typical events that run every year with no changes to the structures? Maybe they need that for new events but why would that hold up the release of a preliminary schedule?

I'm curious, what creative events would they think of adding that the regulatory board wouldn't approve?

This is not new ! It’s going on since last 5-7 years . Someone suddenly took all the credit for the success and delaying schedule to prove self ego that he is responsible for WSOP success.
They knew how in advance they have approch CCC ( or whatever name of states authority in Nevada) in order to release schedule or part of it in January.
But if Corporate bosses ( Normally Non Gaming People) finds out how easy the process is then someone may loose the Job easily

historically its usually mid of february andone year it was announced legit on feb 20th or around then which was really late imo

That was late compared to previous years. If I remember correctly it was always in mid January or earlier with important tournament dates.

In 2021 WSOP was in late winter , so it was announced in April.

2020 was canceled due to Covid.

And if I remember correctly 2018 & 2019 were announced in December.

I have to accept one thing:

We are all waiting for 2025 schedule ! And complaining about late announcements!

You lost me on the Nguyen bit. Not really sure where you were going with that or how it relates to the schedule release.

Anywho, it’s not at all the same. With basketball, you have a single game in a dedicated arena with fixed seating. Logistically, you’re comparing it to a game with many unknown logistical issues (which game variations would be best to offer, economic conditions that may impact attendance, other conferences and/or hotel/casino events that may need the space, how many tables to set up, staffing issues, regulatory issues, new management this year, etc. are some that come to mind and I’m certain there are dozens others that I haven’t thought of).

Not to mention the fact that waiting creates buzz and anticipation. It gets people more excited to hear the big reveal.

I mean, some of you seem upset at a “delay” when the big events usually get announced right around now. Sure, some years have come sooner but some have come later but it’s usually around this time and a full schedule in February. Some are acting like this year is an anomaly when it’s par for the course.

What are you talking about? Where do you get the idea that some nebulous internal ego-driven person is intentionally holding up releasing the schedule to somehow take credit for WSOP success?

I just don’t see the need to imply racism by citing a 140% increase in attendance over a seven year span as having more relevance than a more than 300% increase in one year after Moneymaker.

With all do respect - In my opinion - it was the access to internet poker that spurred the increase. Real money Poker sites started online in 1999 (possibly late 1998) as that action increased the number of players dramatically and the sites very early on started the Satellite system that has had massive attendance impact right up to today. Additionally the impact of inflation on the entry fee (specifically to the MAIN EVENT) has put the buy in into reach of more and more people every year. You aren't "buying" a car anymore. Moneymaker was the Golden Ring the bright shining star with the perfect name. It was reinforced by Steve Dannenmann and then brilliant Marketing idea of the November 9 with the true every man Dennis Phillips leading the pack during the long delay. This was followed up by the TV coverage of players like Darvin Moon and that was the mixture that spurred the growth. ( Note also the overall growth of CASINO's across the country was a HUGE factor in what we see today's attendence).

In my opinion the success of WSOP is totally belongs to player based . Yes after Chris Moneymaker win , big corporate marketing engine , Inflation, online availability of poker , TV coverage etc were definitely big factors.

The idea was an immigrant, hotel kitchen worker , unknown name in poker community came from nowhere and won most coveted poker title!!

Till then only pro players were following the WSOP. There was typical profile for poker players.

Till then no run of a mill ordinary worker ever won any big poker tournament.

A casino kitchen worker, an Asian immigrant has created huge interest in Chinese, Korean , Vietnami community and other immigrant communities.

These communities were not new to casinos, since 60’s they were the part of casino workforce. This event just opened their vision and started to become regular in player force .

For middle class Americans, poker was their family , friends game . They knew the game and they also changed their vision and turned Las Vegas bound.

And broke the flood of interest and upward trend started.
And came Moneymaker….rest is the history..

Rounders, hole card cams, WPT. There were a lot of factors contributing to the WSOP's explosive growth in the 00s.

Lon, Norm, and ESPN deserve credit too. I still think a significant % of the WSOP's annual domestic foot traffic owes itself to those early ESPN telecasts, where they very effectively sold the prestige of the WSOP to a broad audience. I recently re-watched the 2008 WSOP Main just for kicks. They did a great job in that era of putting a lot of shine on something that is, on some level, bingo-for-degens. That's not to say that the WSOP itself (as an actual series) isn't a meritocracy to a degree, but rather that any one single tournament is mostly about running pure.

They were able to convincingly package it as a "world championship".

I assume whats annoying is that all the casinos that run summer series need to wait for wsop in order to get going and maek their own schedules so hopefully in a wek or 2 they announce

I still love watching those old episodes. The quality of how they filmed them gave the impression that poker was non-stop excitement. Watching how they played back then is pretty cringy, though. Definitely the good old days of fish everywhere.
