WSOP 2021 is in jeopardy too, unless they plan for late summer or fall. Even the 2021 summer olympics may not actually happen. This all may seem extreme, and it is, but not out of the question. This pandemic is unprecedented in modern times, but based on mathematical and scientific models these extreme fat tails are realistic.

The sobering reality most policy makers for business and politics don't want to discuss is that large scale gatherings such as live poker tournaments, concerts, sports (with fans in the house), conventions, theater, festivals etc. will not be completely safe from coronavirus until late summer 2021 or even fall 2021, after the virus has run it's natural course and a vaccine has been developed and made available to billions of people. This will likely take approx. 18 months or longer. This is scientific reality, beyond socio-political economic interests, and whatever somebody posts on YouTube .

Until there is a vaccine, and 60%+ herd immunity, one must be willing to risk getting the virus in order to gather in a large crowd. Some people will certainly be willing to take the risk. Others will not. Gov't and business will certainly open venues way before the scientific and medical community thinks it will be safe, because gov't and business will value gov't and business over human life. Same as it ever was (but higher stakes).

Personally, I won't be attending any events with large crowds until I see empirical evidence that it is relatively safe. I'm no guinea pig. Let the bold and fearless take the risks first. That will mean letting a few months of large events take place without significant outbreaks before going there myself.
while I think your post makes a ton of sense and I agree with what a lot of you are saying, sadly I think politicians and citizens will put their own interest and the economy way ahead of this. They will sacrifice lives and safety and moreover, people just will not accept this "new normal" it's American culture. People will just eventually start going back to normal even if it's not safe until marshal law is declared. Sad but true, that's our country culture.

I don’t see WSOP starting as planned . If somehow they do they must make table max 5 players per table. And so many other changes

Once people are deemed "immune" through antibody tests, they will be allowed to gather in large crowds. And crowds will also be allowed when surveillance testing and case tracing measures are better in place than they have been, or even are right now. Will the crowds be as big as normal? Of course not. But they will grow over time. And the timeline for this is much shorter than the vaccine. We're talking a few months, not upwards of a year or more as in the case of a vaccine. I never rule anything out completely (like saying there is a 0% chance of this or 100% chance of that). But the idea that we will have the same sort of social distancing measures in place throughout the country 6 months from now, never mind more than a year from now, are extremely far-fetched IMO. Society will not stand for it. This is not The Plague and i feel like the appetite for treating it as such will significantly diminish in the not-too-distant future.

But, of course, regardless of what the tests say and what the policies are, you will be free to abstain from living a normal life as long as you want.

To say people value their own interests more than the interests of others is hardly an epiphany. That goes for both you and the culture you insinuate you're apart from.

And this notion of "do what I think is right, or else you're sacrificing lives and safety" is pure hogwash. A) because its an entirely self-obsessed way to view the world and B) because it ignores the reality that every single day of people's lives, whether there is a pandemic occurring or not, there are those in positions of leadership, influence and power who make decisions which sacrifice lives and safety. That is how the world works. And people seem capable of accepting it and going about their lives without too much trouble. It won't be any different with this.

I don't think they will hold the WSOP while social distancing policies, as defined right now, are in place. It wouldn't be the WSOP. I mean, they could hold a handful of events like you suggest, but there would hardly seem to be any reason to do so. Attendance would be extremely low. The only way I see the WSOP happening at all (whether it is as scheduled, or delayed to later in the summer) is if social distancing is no longer official polcy. And the only way that happens is if we have widespread antibody testing, surveillance testing and case tracing in place. Could that happen before the end of summer? I think so. But that still doesn't mean the WSOP can happen in that timeframe given the logistics of running an event like that.

Won't happen. People won't put up with it.
"Come over here so we can test your blood."
"FU and the horse you rode in on."

There would have to be an amendment to the Constitution, pretty much lighting it on fire.

You were lucky she did a rebuy, she is horrible, even when she ran 2nd buy in up to chip lead I knew that would fade fast.

I don’t know what the logistics of it would be, but a voluntary finger prick
hardly seems like an assault on the constitution. I also think the vast majority of people would be happy to be tested for their own piece of mind and also protect those near to them.

The words "widespread antibody testing, surveillance testing and case tracing" don't go with "voluntary".

I don't think anyone is going to force their way into your home to test you, if that's what you're getting at. In any case, in the US, people go through all sorts of invasive things in order to function in their daily lives, whether its background checks, fingerprinting, drug tests, etc. Again, over the next year or so until there is a vaccine, I do not believe having to get your finger pricked in order to go back to work or attend a conference is an undue assault on constitutional rights.

An announcement just came out from Caesars Entertainment that the decision has been made that an announcement would come out sometime between now and May 26th in regard to the WSOP schedule. They wanted to provide some clarity for those waiting on booking travel plans, so sometime between now and the day before the WSOP's planned start, they will make an official statement.

BOOOM haha

I think he is joking.

In January, my summer plans were about going to Las Vegas in June, and going to some Phish concerts in July. Now there is zero chance of either happening. Even in the slim event that those events happen, I'm not going.

Announcement or not,we all pretty much know there will be no 2020 edition of WSOP. In fact,we will be lucky to have the 2021 run on time. We are in this for the long hall.

Even if they do run late this year . Attendance will be very minuscule. I won’t be one of them . Good Luck to all the hardcore .

My guess is they push back the start to early June and run a smaller version of the series. I still have plans to be in Vegas in June so we shall see.

I assume you meant July. I agree and think this would be a best case scenario.

Small edition or not there is NO WAY of getting around any close contact period. No WSOP this year for me. Trust me this is a painful statement

lets face it it's impossible for the wsop to happen. shame on them for not cancelling already. what are they trying to prove by holding out? do they not understand that people have lives and schedules and should inform people that the event will not happen as soon as they can. It puts a really bad taste in people's mouths going forward.

Not sure why you care. If they announce tomorrow that all is going to happen as scheduled, will you go? If the answer is no then you shouldn't care if they make any sort of announcements. If the answer is yes, then you should make your plans like normal and hope for the best, while expecting the worst.

If, on the other hand, you are troubled by the uncertainty, then I'm sorry. These are uncertain times we are living through. Nut up.

They haven't made an announcement because they don't know if it's going to be postponed until date X or cancelled and see you next year.

As of right now, casinos seem to be hoping to reopen May 1 or May 15. If they do, then the WSOP is going to try to run as scheduled, or as close to that as possible. The current stay at home order in Nevada expires on April 30. If and when that gets extended to at least mid-May, that's probably when we will get an announcement on the status of the WSOP.

As long as the government doesn't say it's not allowed, the WSOP will happen. The government has not yet said that it will not be allowed, so they are going to act as if it can still happen.

Agree with you 100% I think a good date is May 15. I do think WSOP should shorten the series, push back the start date a week or so for first week of June.

Thats the thing... Even if it were to go ahead, would you/people really want to take part know covid19 is still very much in full flow. It would be a massive shame for it not to go ahead but id imagine people would want to be healthy and get rid of this thing first and start again next year, no?
