Google Maps is showing the walk for me to the Rio will be .3 miles. That cant be that terrible even in the middle of the afternoon.

You’d be surprised. You’re walking across the parking lots of both casinos AND around to the other side of the Rio to get to the convention center. It’s probably closer to a half mile, on blacktop, with no shade, in 115 degree heat.

The other thing is, I live in California and drive to Vegas so I always have a car. It’s not like I took a cab or Uber or something. Why make yourself hot and miserable when you don’t have to?

I've never stayed at the Gold Coast in a dozen years of coming to the WSOP and considering it every time (always ended up opting for the Rio itself or somewhere like the Wynn). This year - I have booked the Gold Coast and will test out that walk ...

One year I did hire a car for getting myself from the Wynn back and forth to the Rio - kind-of ridiculous but it actually wasn't expensive and it was a real joy to not be waiting in line for cabs (and I did occasionally drive someplace else).

Mind you, that was pre-Uber. Now I think I'd really struggle to justify it.

But - yeah - Vegas is a unique place and causes one to make all kinds of odd choices/decisions!

Oh for sure now Uber is #1 choice. Generally I rent a
Car but last exclusively used Uber.

Valid points. Wouldnt be the first time I was wrong. I guess the one thing I got going for me is I should be sleeping during the hottest part of the day most days. Thanks for all the info.

If one was walking and it was so unbearable, why would they walk AROUND the building and NOT simply go into the door by the buffet and complete the walk in air conditioning?

That was my plan when I had contemplated Gold Coast last year...one spends VERY LITTLE time out of doors when using that entrance.

The walk simply isn't that big of a deal.

This is true; as one who made the walk many times post surgical with a cane for a prop, OK now no cane: the Dr Meh appears to have something in his head which won't let go.

DR. Meh, awhile back I was under the impression that you didn't stay at the Gold Coast but walked in, declared it dirty and unforgiving and proceeded to walk out and did not stay at the Gold Coast.

The walk outside to the Rio is easy, through the indoor parking and across the street to the side entrance, not that far. The other side of the walk is through the casino to the convention center which is the same distance which someone who stays at the Rio has to walk.

Walk, again, across the street from the rooms at Bally's to the poker room at the Bellagio and note the distance. The walking distances on the strip are no shorter, even if going from one casino to its mate.

The heat is basically a non factor or only marginal; I have the most trouble with the heat when I had to wait for a bus from Harrah's to the Rio only to be cut out due to overflow. Walking in the heat(within reason) is much preferable to standing for that ephemeral bus in queue ; cab or Uber/Lyft will come to the rescue.

I think someone should petition Clark County to build a tram from the Gold Coast to the Rio. That would seem so solve everyone's problem.

It wouldn't, the walk for ingress and egress to the tram would be as far away as they could make it from our destination; and then there is the question of price.....

Re: 2018 WSOP

Hey all, I'm excited and counting down the days, as the WSOP is just a short 3 and a half months away. I know there might be a better place to post this, but just looking for opinions and what works best for others in regards to renting a car vs uber. 2 years ago I went the uber route, and last year I rented a car. I've stayed on the strip both years, and plan to do the same this year. Pros/cons to each for sure, and from a cost perspective they're pretty similar. Curious what everyone's thoughts are on this and what works best for them? Thanks a bunch, and see y'all in a few months!

I always rent a car in Vegas, I enjoy the freedom of having my on transportation.
It can be an issue only if you drink.

Re: 2018 WSOP

Agree that the walk from Gold Coast to Rio is a short, easy one for people with no health issues even in mid day summer heat, as long as you walk through casino, not around.

plus... If you are driving, your air conditioning probably won't cool down your car before you arrive across the street.

Gold Coast is dirty and gross but I reluctantly stayed there that one year. Stayed downtown another year (never again since itís more disgusting than ever and no longer has the old Vegas charm). Now I stay at Red Rock. Nice, clean, quiet, and comped rooms.

Stoked for the summer as well. I stayed at the palms for 7 nights last year and had a rental. So nice to be able to have the freedom to drive around and go to in n out or Starbucks. I am staying comped at Harrah's this year but plan on renting a car again. I have TR Visa and if you spend 750 in the first 6 months they upgrade you to platinum so parking fees are waved. You can just park at TI for free on the strip and Uber elsehwre and back. Having a car is the way to go regardless. GL.

It really depends on how much driving you need to do and between which locations. Some of the parking areas are not at all conveniently located. For example, if you're staying at Ballys, the parking garage is at least a 5 minute walk away at Paris.

So if you had Diamond tier status right now, what would your rate be staying at the Rio?

I've stayed at Gold Coast the past 4 summers. The walk is very easy, I shudder to think what the guys itt look like that are complaining about being outside for a few minutes. As for the hotel itself, it is pretty much a dump but there aren't many options on this side of Vegas.

The guys itt arenít ďcomplaining about being outside for a few minutes.Ē Not sure what youíre suggesting about appearance but Iím white and a high skin cancer risk, if that helps your visual. If instead youíre implying that people who donít like to get super sweaty in 115 degree heat before sitting in close proximity to others are overweight or out of shape, you can gfy. At least some of us are considerate of others and care about our hygiene.

A few minutes across a parking lot in the morning hours is not something that causes a person in just half-way decent physical shape to be perspiring in a such a matter as to offend the olfactory senses of others nor is it going to be problematic for persons deemed to be 'high risk' for skin cancer. This isn't an afternoon pool party where one is charbroiling themselves while substantially unclothed...it is a few minutes basically door to door in an extremely low humidity situation where temps are NOT unbearable.

And, for sake of discussion...yeah, I'm white as well, and often about as white as a slice of bread even with a private pool just off of my master bedroom. I have a history of cancer in the family but I am not scared of a few minutes of sunshine.
