A friend of mine has $3500 in lammers and came home with them. She says she asked around and was told they would be good for next year AND are good for any future series’ at the Rio this year. That doesn’t sound right to me as I was under the impression they expire at the end of the year and are only good for the WSOP. Am I wrong?

Never mind. I found the official rules for this year and, just as I thought, you need to use them or lose them.

I saw signage that said they expire at the end of the WSOP in July, not the year. I don't think you can even use them for Circuit events.

You’re correct, you can’t. I told her this before she left and she said she asked an employee and that’s what they told her. So she’s either lying or she was grossly misinformed. I know they hire a bunch of new staff for the WSOP each year so it’s possible someone just had no clue what they were talking about. But as you say, there’s signage and the official rules online. Luckily, she lives in California so an extra trip out there soon won’t be too difficult but I’m glad I looked into it for her or she would have had quite the disappointing trip next year if she showed up with $3,500 in lammers from this year. Those would quickly become expensive card protectors.

Most of the staff and even some of the dealers know nothing about the WSOP, or even poker. They just get pulled from CET casinos all over town to work the WSOP. One guy told me they went into the blackjack pit, grabbed 5 guys, and told them they were now WSOP dealers. None had even played poker, much less knew how to deal it.

A couple years ago a suit saw me trying to sell a lammer to another player. He screamed at me at the top of his lungs and told me to cash it in at the cage.

So you can now cash in lammers? Or just another ill-informed guy?

The dealer at one of the sngs I played in was visibly nervous as we waited for the table to fill up. I asked her if she was ok and she said “yeah, this is just my first time ever dealing a poker game and I hope people are nice.” I was in seat 10 and told her I’d help her out and had to quietly give her instructions a few times. I get that it’s a huge event and a ton of personnel are needed but dang. First time dealing is the WSOP? Crazy.

I mean, a $125 SNG isn't really "the WSOP", and seems like one of the easier ways to break in a dealer, as opposed to cash games where she has to remember the rake.

There's a lot more procedure in a SNG than a cash game, plus the pressure of the clock to be fast but accurate.

What "more procedure" is there in a SNG than a cash game? She has to run the little timer, but that seems a lot more easy to remember/more intuitive/not involved every hand as compared to calculating and dropping rake.

Also, a mistake in a $125 SNG is generally going to be a lot less damaging than a mistake in a $3k pot in a deep 2/5 game or something like that.

I have no problem with newer dealers handling SNGs or cash games versus the main event. But to have absolutely no experience is ridiculous. SNGs are a pretty big part of the WSOP which prides itself as the pinnacle poker series. I don’t think wanting a dealer with an ounce of experience rather than just a random person who may or may not have even went to dealer school is too much to ask.

I don’t see why anybody would pay face value for a lammer. They’re not worth face... cash does all the same things + you’re not handing money to a stranger + it doesn’t expire if for some reason you forget to use it by the end of the series. why would anyone pay face value?
