For rec players who work and/or have families, that's not a viable option. The whole event just seems odd and out of place, especially for a tournament series which prides itself as the best of the best.

Hell, Vegas is only an 8 hour drive for me, but I'm not going to take a second trip and maybe have to take time off work for what might amount to a couple hundred buck payout even if I last quite awhile into day 2.

Just like the aria $550 got a ton of entries, this one will get too. Plenty of regs that will fire this, plenty of amateurs too. I like the idea and the scheduling of it....

Frankly, designing an event geared towards recs and not putting out a guarantee is a bit self-defeating.

So why even bother playing Day 1 when they can just do Colossus all in one trip for only a couple hundred more?

And I doubt many really saw how big Colossus would be that first year. So, you just don't know for sure till it happens.

In any case, this Giant event definitely seems to be geared towards rec players with its price point and weekend schedule. Yet, its a turbo format, it has no guarantee, is a 7:00pm to 3:00 am tourney and requires the player to come to vegas twice to make any serious money. These are all decidedly anti-rec-player factors. It really seems quite self-defeating.

In thinking it over, I don't think this will be nearly that popular. I imagine the first 4 starting flights will only get a few hundred entries each. The 7/7 flight will likely be the largest, but its on the same day as the primary ME satellite day and the Ladies event. The Rio can only accommodate ~5000 players at a time, so I don't see this final flight getting much over 1K. They may even have to cap it if those 1PM and 4PM satellites are heavily attended.

At this point, I just don't think the Giant will eclipse 2000 entries total. But I guess we'll have a better idea once that first flight is in the books.

Dneg complained about Colossus being too cheap when it first came out. Does anyone follow him on twitter or anything and know if he has weighed in on The Giant?

If they get much more than that, it will certainly be a testament to the power of slogans.

Lots of chatter about the "Giant" tournament prior to the WSOP this summer. Well, the people have spoken...

http://www.wsop.com/tournaments/resu...d=15619&dayof=

And this was definitely a much bigger success than I and other people expected. Looks like busto23 was closest with his pre-event predictions.

I'd be really curious to know the per-flight numbers and uniques. Anyone have access to that kind of info? I'm sure there were tons of multi-entries, but still, 10000 is nothing to sneeze at. I just can't believe so many people were willing to play a 7pm-4am turbo, just to get a shot at a decent prizepool and a bracelet. It seems like there were better options. But this just goes to show the power of the WSOP brand.

Busto was close but I was mostly talking about uniques. I googled it and couldn't find anything but I wasn't digging very deep. Uniques is where it's at, for me. I think they should always differentiate between uniques vs rebuys.

I agree, and I believe the trend overall this summer was that there were fewer players spending more money, which isn't necessarily the best thing long-term. However this event still did a lot better than I thought. Hopefully someone can provide the uniques figure, and maybe the per flight numbers, which would also be interesting.

I am curious how many went out and sprayed the entry fees around the various properties instead of just at WSOP. I know I had entries at five different properties across my three trips out there in June. The ONLY money spent at WSOP was for the Seniors Event. WSOP scheduling just did not work for how I was having to do my travels to balance work and poker...

So...safe to say I spent a LOT more than I did last year, just that it wasn't spent at The Rio. Absent changes on the schedule, next year will likely be the same even if I spent MORE time in LAS than I did this year.

Re: WSOP- 2017 ?

My guess is that people just playing generic NLH within one price range were property loyal. If not playing just generic NLH (non-NLH, or Seniors NLH or Women's NLH) you had to go to multiple properties.

Based on your other comments, I think you're precisely the sort of "rec" player the WSOP sort of abandoned this year with their premier weekend events. Unfortunately (at least IMO), they didn't take a big financial hit for it, so I'm not sure anything will change in the near term. However, I heard a lot of chatter around Vegas at other venues. The shine is off the WSOP. At some point, its gotta hurt them.

As for me, I played only one WSOP event... the MS. And I was in town for a month. And I, too, spent lots of money at lots of other sites.

Same. I only played one event but played elsewhere for the rest of the week.

Exactly the same for me. WSOP Sr. and then events at the Aria.

I guessing the starting time helped in some way. Maybe people that busted early in other events thought "why not?" since it was a DS and a turbo.. if you bust, it's only $400. Like you I'm curious on the # of unique entries and flight regs.
