Your Most Hated Movie of All Time Your Most Hated Movie of All Time

The year was 1986. A young me went to get his Lea Thompson fix. Going on opening day, there were no reviews to warn me - no hand to guide me away from the dark room I had paid to enter. (The money being the insult-to-injury that only Alex deLarge could truly understand.)

Some may remember 1986 for mad cow disease, but I remember it for Howard the Duck.

But how do we make the leap from this being a bad film to being a hated film? I think there has to be a visceral component. It could be that this was the first, and only, movie I have ever walked out of, never ever having revisited it to see the end. But, no, I think my hatred comes from betrayal and a loss of innocence. That there were others in the world who would take advantage of a wide-eyed viewing public and take their money under the false promises of being entertained may have been just a little too much for a naive young lad as myself to absorb.

Why ******ed? It was based on a true story, and is a risk if a bunch of people dive from a boat. (It is a very boring film, though - I just fail to understand your choise of adjective.)

hikeeba, I think Howard the Duck was saved partially by a screenshot of Lea Thompson's panties iirc. At least for me - I was 7.

1986 worst disasters ordered thusly:

Howard the Duck
Chernobyl
Challenger
other negligible stuff

Had great success despite bad story line and lack of hot chicks, but the worst thing about it is how much it forced ****ING 3D movies down our throats

I mean, Independence Day wasn't exactly high-quality film, so what would one expect from a sequel?

I'm sorry I missed this thread. I always thought I was the only one who hated Princess Bride. It's worse than The Searchers.

Thanks for the bump Dom. A list that leaps immediately to mind:

Throw Momma From the Train. Crystal and DeVito, how bad could it be? That bad.

Spoiler:
"Sultry" occurred immediately[ to me. Just one bit of the stupidity that PMO.

Inception and Avatar. Turned them both off. Just didn't get them I guess. Especially the over-the-top hammering home that the Iraq War was bad. Yes, they were right, but JFC, how about even a tiny bit of sublety?

Apparently, people still don’t understand the difference between “my most hated movie of all time” and “movies I didn’t like.”

Most hated is St. Elmo's Fire. By a mile. Every character is completely vile.

Kirby (Emilio Estevez) is a stalker. But he's a cute, lovable stalker! He stalks his victim (Andie McDowell) at parties and all the way to her secluded cabin in the woods. Rather than call the cops or (preferably) shoot him, Andie and her boyfriend give him a blanket and let him stay over. The next day, an oddly self-satisfied Kirby says "later, dude!" to the boyfriend and drives off.

Billy (Rob Lowe) is a lowlife loser who plays sax poorly and tries to rape Demi Moore in a car. Judd Nelson and Ally Sheedy are despicable right-wing douchebags. Andrew McCarthy, like Emilio Estevez, is basically a stalker who is supposed to be "nice". He's not as lovable as Kirby but more artsy. He stalks Ally Sheedy who has sex with him but in the end she tells both McCarthy and Nelson that she doesn't want to be with either of them, but wants them all to be friends. Nelson and McCarthy respond with the epic cinema line, "Ehhhh... okay."

Demi Moore is a materialistic drug addict with a giant loft apartment with no furniture. Mare Winningham is the token do-gooder liberal who ends up dating a nerdy Jew named Howie. Howie is only there for us to laugh at, because he can never be as cool as the sax playing frat-boy loser Rob Lowe, who honors the frumpy Winningham by taking her virginity soon after his failed rape attempt of Demi Moore.

I've never hated fictional characters as much as I hate these people. In the final scene they all are in the street yelling "Bluka bluka bluka, ho ho ho!", which is something they all like to yell together, although why I don't know. I wanted a car to come barreling down the street and take them all out, but sadly not all movies have happy endings.

It's no fun picking a known terrible film, so I'll go with Gus Van Sant's Elephant. It should be the entry for the word pretentious in the dictionary.
