I think how a movie affects us can even be tied into our mood when we see it. If you're in a goofy or silly mood, a comedy might be just that much funnier. Sometimes there's the sense of expectation as well. My friends all hyped up the first Pirates of the Carribean movie, which I found to be pretty meh, and the sequels were all even worse.
I'm not gonna claim I have "good taste" in movies or anything. I just don't really care for sci-fi. I find the "let's make **** up - it's the future - anything goes!" style of film-making as a huge crutch towards actual story telling and/or character development. I do like some sci-fi, just nearly none of it. And I had people telling me how awesome it was for many years and they were FLOORED at the idea that I hadn't yet masturbated to it several times. I assured them I probably wouldn't care for it. Finally one night I acquiesced and "watched" it with my wife, brother and sister-in-law and fell asleep 30 minutes in. They thought I was intentionally being a stick in the mud.

Some sci-fi I like: 2001, Clockwork Orange, T2, maybe some others.

Remember, this is supposed to be movies you hate, not movies you merely dislike or found boring.

By definition, it should be a movie that provoked a strong feeling in you.

Ahh, then yeah The Matrix I was completely indifferent to. I wouldn't say I hated it.

I can't think of any movie I hate. If someone forced me to watch a movie I didn't like I would begin to hate or loathe it but for the most part if a movie sucks I never watch it again and thus don't allow it to evoke any strong ill-will towards it. Not sure how anyone would hate any movie, really.

The only movie I ever hated. The Passion of Christ. $400 million in ticket sales to see a snuff film.

I watched 2001 and 2010 back to back the other week. That one-two punch of suck was more than enough to tilt me into hating the pair of them for all time. I think I hated them more than I should because I really wanted to like them.

Let's start with 2001. I'll just explain what the movie was, and that should be enough to explain why I hate it.

20 minutes of apes and bones. We get it.
10 minutes of music in space with some 0G walking.
A short with some crappy dialogue meant to waste some time but give actors a chance to actually act a little.
A little while with more music in space.
A 10 or 15 minute movie about HAL that was actually excellent.
Some psychedelic stuff that I'm sure looked great on acid.
A guy who constantly changes age, implying that the monoliths are some sort of time nexus. Then I find out that instead they're just a tool of some superior intelligence helping people out.

So, what did 2001 get right? Space is silent because it's a vacuum. The HAL short was a good movie. It looks visually impressive even today.

What did it get wrong? It was basically a couple hour long "**** you" to anyone who wasn't completely wasted when they went to see it. I hate it because they delivered a Ferrari to my driveway with a 3 cylinder engine from a Yugo. Had it been crap through and through I would have hated it less.

Now, let's move on to 2010.

What did it get right? Roy Scheider is awesome. Chief Brody in space is something that I should have fun watching. The HAL redemption is decent.

What was wrong? Everything else. Sound in space? Of course they had to **** that one up. They needed to leave 2001 as the only film that ever got that one point right. The dialogue was terrible. The plot and the whole "do not taunt happy fun europa" were stupid. And once again, I truly hate it because I wanted to like it, much as I truly hate 2001 because I wanted to love it.

Yeah, if it were just "films you don't think are very good" then this thread would be just as worthlessly bad and forgettable as those films. These hated movies almost have to be "decent," and almost have to be "almost good."

@Prohornblower-I guess I'm just a little surprised by your comments. You mention not being able to "hate" any movie-does this mean that you simply experience emotion while viewing a movie you dislike, and then forever put it out of your mind after seeing it? I guess I look at movies like any other from of media. Would you say that you in incapable of hating types of music or books as well?
Also, mostly agree about Inception. I did not find the plot engaging and I found myself simply not caring about what was happening and I had no emotional involvement for the plight of the main character.

Gladiator

I think it can be used as a pretty good barometer of character. If a guys a bit of a thick macho **** its odds on to be in his top ten films of all time.
Technically its solid with well filmed action sequences but the plot and characters are so thin and it’s such an obvious attempt to manipulate the audience into rooting for Maximus and glorying in his triumphs. All that I wouldn’t really mind if it was honest that that was all it was and didn’t try and dress its self up as some great Shakespearian tragedy. It’s no deeper then Star Wars the Hero’s virtuous the villains villainous and there’s always only going to be one winner.

woah hating on 2001 like that, is something i can't comprehend. i mean after 20 minutes of monkeys with bones, it becomes pretty obvious what kind of movie it's going to be. When I first saw it, I turned it off shortly after that scene, because it was clear to me I was not digging what was happening. The second time I saw it, I was blown away.

Baby of Macon

Watching this, even fast-forwarding through many sections, left me with a splitting headache and a true loathing of the director. It really felt like it was meant to be warfare against the senses, not so much the eye, but the ear, the vocalisation processing mechanisms within the brain, and one's general sensibilities.

Every copy of this should be buried for 3 months in quicklime, dug up, burned, force-fed to bloodworms, whose dying remains should be burned. The ashes should then be buried for 3 months etc

2012. I knew this was going to suck but a buddy convinced me to see it in the theater and it was worse than I expected. Absolutely hate it, no redeeming qualities.

Dom's hate reminded me of something funny I heard about the end of Titanic.

Near the end, the cinema was quiet, except for the sounds of sniffling teenage girls as Leo went to his demise. Then a middle-aged gentleman in a loud, posh voice said 'WHO WROTE THIS RUBBISH?'

While certainly not in any way a "good" movie, I was thoroughly entertained by the sequences of the earth's self-destruction.

Agree with Million Dollar Baby. That movie pissed me off. Another hated movie that everyone else seemed to like: The Shawshank Redemption. I actually liked this movie the first time I saw it, but for what it was. It has taken on an entirely undeserved place among GOAT movies in the public opinion that makes me hate it more and more with every showing on TBS.

The Grass Harp - A man was hit in the face with a fish. This movie did not have slapstick comedy. What more needs to be said. I was shown this movie in a Film & Lit class in high school. Towards the end, when the kid gets shot and falls out of the tree house, I stood up and screamed "NNNOOOOO!!" The teacher didn't even say anything because everyone in the room knew the movie was terrible and did not care for any of the characters.

Hancock - There was so much potential and then Charlize Theron throws someone through their kitchen wall. The story takes the steepest nose dive possible after that. The climax of the movie is the "villain" (who is only actually in three scenes) gets his second arm ripped off. 4 years earlier, Anchorman did the same thing as a gag, but somehow doing the same thing again during the climax of your movie and being 100% serious about it is ok.

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

This is objectively a horrible movie. I considered giving Attack of the Clones this honor, but ROTS deserves our scorn for how much better it should have been. Tom Stoppard attempted to save the film, and should have made it great, but Lucas sideswiped him so hard Stoppard insisted they remove his name from the marque.

Even James Earl Jones returning to voiceover the newly minted Vader was ruined by dialogue freshly shat out for this terrible, terrible film.

+1

However, the promise of the trailer is so strong I could watch the trailer again and again.
