I don’t hate it, there’s some very nice film technique and a couple of quite interesting scenes (the interview, the doctor visit).

But yeah the story is both silly and unscary. I plead guilty to looking forward to some scenes from the novel (the bike in the road, the wasps, the topiary, even Danny’s offhand question to Dick about why the lady was wishing to get into the guy’s pants) that didn’t make it into the film. Plus using Danny to speak for Tony in squeaky-voice was a total fail IMO.

I saw it opening weekend at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood and the booing and raspberries after it was over was pretty loud.

Probably gonna get flack over this but Donnie Darko bored the crap outa me.

I didn't hate per se and even enjoyed to a degree but also had issues with Attack the Block as I found the protagonists a bunch of annoying scumbags and was rooting for the aliens actually. Didn't appreciate them being portrayed with sympathy.

Rules of Engagement - This one has stuck in my mind for years. I loathe everything about the ideology of this film. It's a piece of flag-waving, toxic masculinity, military-worshipping crap. Samuel L Jackson murders a load of civilians because he's a marine, and the life of one marine is worth a dozen foreigners. Oh and he fought in Nam, which puts him above reproach by anyone who didn't, even if it's not remotely relevant to the event in which he murdered loads of people. It also means he shares a deep understanding and respect with anyone else who fought in Nam, even the Vietcong. And how do he and Tommy Lee Jones resolve an argument? By doing what true men do, ie beating the crap out of each other and then collapsing in laughter. That's how men bond you see. What a piece of crap movie.

Saw this at the Grauman Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on a trip to LA years ago, mainly just because I wanted to see the theatre and that's what was playing. Walked out halfway through. Horrible movie, total dreck.

The thing is, if you don't like a movie, you can always just walk out of it or turn it off. So there must be something else going on here in this thread. It must be about movies that are bad, but other people love. Movies that don't deserve their good reputation. I can think of a couple like that, but I don't hate them.

So I withdraw my nominations of The Searchers and The Princess Bride.

Yeah agree I think there is something worse about a movie that almost everyone else loved, that for whatever reason you think is just completely horrible. It's probably why I hate St. Elmo's Fire so intensely... it has gained almost a cult status as a great 80s movie, but it's just so terrible it almost angers me that others don't see it.

Similar to Cocktail, another 80s hit full of absolutely despicable people who are supposed to be likeable. (Except for Elizabeth Shue who manages to be charming, even in this).

I seem to have an issue with a lot of the teen or brat-pack oriented movies of the 80s. Maybe because they are so beloved by my generation even though they sucked. Even Ferris Buller's Day Off is terrible imo. Ferris is obnoxious and not half as charming as he thinks he is. Comes off like an entitled douche.

But yeah if it's just a bad movie then who cares, everyone hates it. It's the ones everyone else seems to like that get to you.

I could not agree more about Ferris Bueller. Lol I think I even posted in here about much I hated it the day after John Hughes died. Probably not me at my most sensitive. Agree about St. Elmo's Fire too, just awful.

I love me some Cocktail though, it's like 3rd only to Risky Business and Jerry Maguire for my Cruise favs.

I think that Apocalypse now is probably technically the worst movie in history, but I can’t help but loving it.

Haha yeah I guess I can see the appeal of Cocktail, it's good cheezy fun. My wife loves it. I just dislike the 2 main male characters. I do love that the first big bar scene looks to be at the world's most swinging TGI Fridays.

It's funny, I've always had a pet theory that the real plot of Cocktail is of a closeted older man who has an unrequited crush on Tom Cruise, and commits suicide when he realizes he will never be able to have him. In all honestly if you watch the film with that in mind, it becomes pretty obvious.

My most hated movie of all time is Home Alone. I saw it originally when it came out, and I didn't like it at the time and didn't understand why it was so popular. I didn't hate it though, that came a little later. It seemed that mentioning to almost anyone that you didn't like Home Alone got you branded as some kind of sociopath, and I soon learned that if I wanted to have any chance of getting laid, I needed to project a false liking for the movie. Having to see it again, pretend to be excited for the sequel, etc caused the hate to grow, so much that I paid to see The Good Son
Spoiler:
just so I could see Macaulay Culkin dropped off a cliff

Meek’s Cutoff

I’m all for slow-moving films about the American West but this was so unbelievably bad considering it has a good RT score. I always scoff when people say “well nothing happens” in a movie, but……nothing happens in this.

+1 i think that was the point of it all, the uncertainty

I personally don't care for a christmas story to the point that i've never once been able to watch it to finish and all of it just seems terrible - like i've even tried to make myself watch it because i have so many friends who are like zomg it's amazing, a xmas classic but i just can't

perhaps it's something you need to see as a kid

And that's exactly what I did in 1978 when I paid good money to go and see Rabbit Test. Written & directed by Joan Rivers and starring Billy Crystal. To this day, it is still the one and only time that I've ever walked out of a movie theater while the movie was still running. Truly, the worst movie that I've ever seen.

However, I'm not sure that equates to hate. I don't hate it because I rarely ever even think about it. As far as my most hated movie, I think that would have to be Moonraker. I had been a James Bond (and Sean Connery) fan from the beginning and never really cared for any of the Roger Moore movies to that point in time, although I tolerated them. But after sitting through Moonraker, I walked out of the theater despising both Moore and the movie because he had turned Bond into a cartoon character. I never paid to see another Roger Moore Bond film.

Can I nominate Justice League?

Given when it was released, comparisons to the Avengers series were inevitable (no pun intended) and it didn't come close to standing up.

The lighting of the movie is uniformly dark (a personal pet peeve), rare attempts at humor were terrible and seemed completely out of character, most of the main characters are unpleasant and depressed, and they introduced new absolutely key characters with ten seconds of backstory (Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg) while leaving out absolutely key characters from the IP (Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter). The CGI was pretty subpar, and the whole story revolves around "how can we win if Superman isn't with us" - only to be resolved by "good news, he's with us so we win" making the whole team basically irrelevant.

Further to that, you have a piece of IP that is beloved by anyone in the decade in either direction of my age who grew up watching the Justice League cartoons knows have a unbelievable amount of cool and interesting stories to tell, and they told an incredibly boring one.

I have other movies I don't like, but this is the one I hate. You can hit me with the "it was a superhero blockbuster, what were you expecting, Citizen Kane?", but you can watch a superhero blockbuster and expect it to be filled with great action, funny characters, inspiring moments, etc. This had none of them. Just some guy who thinks if you turn down the lighting on set, you're Christopher Nolan.
