Gin rummy scene from Born Yesterday may be the best card scene in all movies.

Agreed. Plus The Killer, perhaps Chow Yun-fat's greatest role. Plus Inherent Vice, a film only a few of us really like. Plus Speed Racer (my granddaughter stole my Speed Racer cell phone cover, so it must be a happening franchise...).

I got into a good conversation with an actress while we were waiting for our tables in a restaraunt. I asked her if she were to remake La Jetee, would she hire actors or models? She thought it was a fun question and talked about the two different jobs requirements for quite a bit.

I used Wikipedia. Wiki has a page for each year with an alphabetical list of all movies released that year.

I struggled with 1963. I took Charade but strongly considered Hud, The Birds, The Great Escape, The Pink Panther, The Nutty Professor and Follow the Boys (don't ask!).

But there were lots of tough years.

going thru this list made me think of a fun game:
pick a film from each year that is your fav film you think no one else/very few ppl have seen.

would make a cool SHEEP or PEEHS game imo (it will be very easy to tell at what point in my list i came up with this idea).

In fact, I've seen it more than once, lol. I just couldn't imagine choosing it as a favorite film from 1989, even if you eliminate the BTTF & Indiana Jones sequels. But I guess that's what makes this thread so great; the lists are so personal and there's really no right or wrong in picking one's personal favorite.

I chose When Harry Met Sally for my pick, but I easily could have gone with Crimes & Misdemeanors, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Cousins, or even Let It Ride. I've seen all of them a multitude of times and continue to enjoy re-watching them whenever I happen to come across one on tv.

So choosing The Dream Team would be a head-scratcher to me, but I'm sure that I have a pick or two that has left others scratching their head or saying WTF as well, lol.

I must have watched the dream team 10x as a kid.
I watched it again recently and it held up decently well.

I can't resist doing something like this so here goes with some comments and various runner-ups that I had to mention:

1979 Apocalypse Now

1980 Raging Bull (I want to say Dressed to Kill since that was a more recent great experience but I can't really get away from all the years that I had Raging Bull as one of my all time favorites)
1981 Blow Out (Weak year for me with not a whole lot seen and this is mostly weird De Palma-compensating for not going with him the year before. I don't even remember Blow Out all that well...)
1982 Blade Runner (Not even a massive favorite like it is for many I'm sure but it just edges out The Thing)

1983 Scarface (I have actually only seen it once and that was fantastic and did the trick. I also have some love for contrasting WarGames and Pauline at the Beach)
1984 Amadeus (I've never rewatched it since seeing it way back in the 90s but it has always stuck with me. Haunting?)
1985 The Breakfast Club
1986 Manhunter (This is the first very difficult year with two absolutely all time favorite movies. The other being Blue Velvet which would be number one most years.)
1987 Au revoir les enfants
1988 The Naked Gun (For some reason almost nothing to chose from here for me and The Naked Gun was quite simply a funny movie for quite a few years back then. My 1988 hole is so deep that the runner-up is probably something like Twins if only based on Arnold being hilarious in that intentional-unintentional way of his at the time. What else? Top Gun? Die Hard? Weird)

1989 sex, lies and videotape (So enjoyable. I'm just about smiling all the way through. I must mention that Weekend at Bernies is something of a favorite)
1990 Miller's Crossing (Maybe it really should be Goodfellas which was so engrossing first time watching it some time in the 90s being quite impressionable but Miller's Crossing is a more recent great experience)
1991 Europa (It is not impossible that Von Trier haters could give this one a shot and not regret it)
1992 Bad Lieutenant (Some old but also somewhat former favorites here with the likes of Reservoir Dogs, Orlando, Belle Epoque)
1993 Three Colours: Blue
1994 Three Colours: Red (The Kieslowski double forces itself though I really like Chungking Express and it can't be denied that around this time in real time the likes of Pulp Fiction, Shawshank and for a long time The Hudsucker Proxy were definite favorites of mine)
1995 Underground (My reaction was less strong the last time that I watched this film but I'm not sure any movie has ever blown me away like this Kusturica epic did the first time that I watched it sometime in the late 90s)
1996 Thesis
1997 Lost Highway (One of my best cinema experiences)

1998 Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Oh no! This is the most impossible year so far. The Big Lebowski, Croupier and Rushmore are all movies that I count among my absolute personal favorites and then there were OG Dogme 98 masterpieces The Idiots and The Celebration but there have been very few movies that I've enjoyed as much/almost died laughing from as many times as Fear and Loathing. It wins)

1999 Being John Malkovich (That was another all time great theater experience. A movie like Eyes Wide Shut has been getting better each time that I've randomly watched it and more recently I quite liked Election)
2000 In the Mood for Love
2001 Mulholand Drive (I have to also mention The Piano Teacher + not least Donnie Darko and Amelie both which I absolutely loved at the time and still hold dear)
2002 Adaptation (Both Talk to Her and City of God were undeniable favorites at the time and Lilya 4-ever made a lasting impression. Adaptation I love the most now.)

2003 Reconstruction (I should watch Reconstruction again but I certainly remember it as a fantastic journey. It's from a very talented Danish director who at that point was hailed as the next big thing. Especially after this film. Dogville and Lost in Translation were definitely favorites during those mid 2000s periods and both would be more obvious choices I guess. Fear X is Refn for the first time in English and it is really good. The Five Obstructions is a very entertaining documentary that I think a lot of film connoisseurs would enjoy and would do well to look up. It's Lars Von Trier challenging a well known documentary maker to remake one of his classic movies, with obstructions of course)

2004 Troy (Troy?? I dunno. I liked it! I liked the Iliad, Hector and Achilles + really liking Sideways or Eternal Sunshine seems like such a long time ago. Mysterious Skin is my wild card.)
2005 Cache (Masterpiece)
2006 The Prestige (Oh no! This is quite possibly even worse than 1998. Inland Empire in many ways is the ultimate Lynch movie I feel. I dislike that many write it off. It's crazy that it's not my number one but The Prestige is just too enjoyable over and over. It's almost the ultimate story or tale for my senses. Pan's Labyrinth and The Lives of Others were both very strong at the time but I've never re-watched them. I even love V for Vendetta and have a very soft spot for Marie Antoinette. There is also something about Miami Vice, though it's definitely a distant wild card to the others mentioned.)

2007 There Will Be Blood (TWBB is so masterful that it's a clear number one but I have to mention Zodiac of course+ the powre of both of Boy A and 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days, the epic story and drama of Atonement and finally something of a cult favorite of mine called Rocket Science though I'm unsure if it would hold up strongly if I watched it again)

2008 Il Divo (I think you almost have to have a certain complicated Italian politics fetish to really enjoy Il Divo. The Baader Meinhof Complex is kind of an impactful German/European companion now that I think about it. Everyone loved Let the Right One In but it seems like such a long time ago. I don't have many 2008 candidates)

2009 White Ribbon/A Prophet (This is where I just have to give up. For me these are probably top 3 movies of the last 10 years and all time favorites as well. Recent masterpieces and it's impossible to choose. Then there is a movie like Fish Tank which is not even that far away. It's riveting and amazing/Life's a ***** semi-ending blew me away. Antichrist is crazy in just about the great sense.

2010 Kick-Ass (The point in the movie where Kick-Ass and Red Mist are driving towards the trap/setup and the way it looks and the way it sounds, things are suddenly getting very serious and the movie in my mind begins a liftoff that I'm just completely into during many scenes with the colors/costumes, the music, the stakes and the emotion. The action)

2011 Drive (Drive is the movie that I always wanted even if I didn't even know it. Thank you Refn! Once Upon a Time in Anatolia is so perfectly slow, deliberate and rich. Tinker Tailor Solider Spy is very good and has stayed with me. Into the Abyss is Herzog doing great. That also stays with you)

2012 The Act of Killing (Simply amazing. Miraculous? Starting with the idea itself, then everything else)
2013 The Great Beauty (I despised Youth so I find myself almost annoyed that there are two Sorrentino movies represented here, Il Divo the other, when following Youth I can't regard him as a favorite director at all. I'm yet to watch The Young Pope. The Great Beauty was plenty brilliant of course and nothing I watched 2013 seriously rivaled it. Under the Skin maybe 2nd)

2014 Turist (Force Majeure) (Very difficult year and I could have picked most of these: Frank probably isn't for everyone but I absolutely loved it, Gone Girl could not be anymore entertaining, Phoenix is a fantastic construction and what an ending, Nightcrawler blew me away the first time I watched it, Leviathan is many more things than most movies and Clouds of Sils Maria is more brilliant the more I think about it. Turist or Force Majeure if you will is so smart though and watching the movie I'm constantly giddy or uncomfortable. Good!)
2015 Mad Max: Fury Road
2016 O.J.: Made in America (I haven't seen nearly enough to make this call but this was comprehensively great of course and difficult to better I reckon)

The fact this is someone's favorite for an entire year is only slightly less disturbing than the movie itself and that is saying something.

I still watch this movie 4-5 times a year and sing along to every track.

What do you find so disturbing about the movie? FWIW, that was one of my favorite movie musicals back in the day, and I think I'd still put it in my list of top ten (or perhaps top five) favorite movies from 1973.

Just as an fyi, although this was great, I don't think anyone from the U.S. would have even thought to consider this documentary for this list because it would have been seen as a tv show (or shows, actually) here on ESPN, and in fact, can still be watched from their website. I believe that it was only briefly released as a "movie" in Los Angeles (and perhaps NY) just so that it would qualify for Academy Awards consideration.

C'mon, no cheating. I think everyone could have listed an honorable mention or two for most years, but that's taking the easy way out. I think you should follow Dom's instruction to choose one - - -and only one - - - film for each year. That's what makes it both fun and difficult at the same time. Having to leave out your "second favorite" or "almost favorite" or "honorable mention" without further clarification, is half the challenge.

I agree completely. BTW, I showed my list to a colleague who also teaches film. She didn't recognize half the films on my list.
