I've been a Mencken fan for almost forty years: i read some of his stuff when i was fifteen and it stuck with me.

that one was certainly effective. Another one I liked was when Hitchens and his friend Martin Amis were in a dive restaurant on cape cod when someone else in the restaurant recognized Hitchens. The man walked up to them and said "you're going to hate me for this, but --"
