when you see the ad for this movie heres your chance to act like big mr literary guy and talk of how the bok is so much better than the film in terms of plot development and explains the motivations of the characters and their back stories in much greater detail
how you wish theyd stop destroying the classics
how this is a symptom of the decline of our civilization
and if they call you on it
say
(sheepishly)
i only read the cliffs notes...
im not much of a reader
i saw this on p2p and thought i could be a literature baller

Er ... it's a kid's book and there aren't many lines.

I think it's absolutely wonderful and amazingly imaginative though. Even more so in the context of its goody-two-shoes times.

I'm not familiar with the movie you are discussing but if I may offer the flip side of your argument, the only movie I have ever seen that was true to the novel was To Kill A Mockingbird.

no no no TKAM the book was so so so much better than the movie...though peck's performance was great the movie itself really wasn't all that great.

"True" to the novel or better than the novel? There are plenty of movies that are better than their books.

Silence of the lambs was one of the best screen adaptations of a book that I've ever seen.

WTWTA is my favorite kids book. I wont see the movie, but I think that they did a good job with the costumes...look just like they do in the book.

Agreed. And many, many more are much worse.

Few are as good as their source material.

I think the only ones that have much of a chance of it tend to be short stories. Novels are too robust to be crammed into a movie without losing things you're bound to like a lot.

I personally liked Kubrick's adaption of The Shining over the book.

also when I first read the title of this post I actually thought it was a discussion on the movie: Wild Things with Denise Richards & Neve Campbell(?), & whether the book was better!!

Blarg,

Have you ever read Ben Hur? General Wallace's book is often cited as the worst novel ever written.

well we're back from the movie. I thought it was going to be in 3D but alas it was just regular IMAX... at least it was on the 70 foot tall screen. Anyway I thought the movie was terrific. Obviously they really have to expand the story to make a 2 hour movie from a short picture book but everything from the book is in the movie. What they've added is true to the spirit of the story as well, where the journey and the wild things really seem an extension of Max's psyche and the turmoil within him.

My daughter ran the entire gamut of emotions: joy, delight, rage, laughter, crying, fright, sadness.

Not really important structure wise or percentage wise.

And apparently no copyright, so you can read it for free online.
Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ

I found this glowing review on Amazon.com

5 stars - a must read for Junior High Students
"I believe this is a lost treasure. All students should be exposed to this well written literature book."

LOL home school mommery.

What are the chances one of those would be extremely partial to religious stuff?

I actually think Wild Things is pretty solid. The ending where they're just throwing twist after twist at you is purposely satirical and ludicrous, and it's wonderful.

Also, in the courtroom scene when whoever admits that they weren't really raped or something like that, the woman in the audience who stands up and screams "what!" is my cousin.

The Troggs and Tone Loc must be considered before any book or movie.

You should really catch up with the times. Religious wackos were ahead of the curve on homeschooling, but their numbers have plateaued. They're an ever-shrinking percentage of total homeschoolers nowadays.

Whether that is true or not, and I see no reason to believe it, it does nothing to negate what I said. The home schooling movement was substantially led by and for religious reasons.

You should catch up with the a broader perspective on the politics of the last few decades.

Jaws. I've got tons more. However, movies and books are just different and tell stories in different ways. Foolhardy to compare a film to its source material in an attempt to say which is "better."

i never liked that book even as a little kid in elementary school , i remember our librarians making a big deal like we are about to be read the most amazing book ever (it won a pulitizer!@$!$!) then they read it to us and i wasn't impressed, didnt see anything new , and didnt see why the adults thought it was so great.

wat?

Did you actually read my poast? I explicitly admitted EXACTLY what you just said.

Still, your "religious wacko" = "homeschooler" equivocacy fails in both directions and just exposes you as a bigot.

A religious wacko's kids are overwhlemingly more likely to go to a traditional school than to be homeschooled.

Homeschoolers are no longer overwhelmingly dominated by wackos.
