Before I lost touch with that music, Blur was one of my favorite bands. I don't know what that stuff is that you posted there, but it doesn't even compare to three of my favorite songs by them. I'll list them in chronological order, enjoy:

To me, the song Parklife was their peak. I saw them in Dallas in the Summer of 1992, shortly before the Popscene single came out, and they were totally wasted, such a sloppy show. Alex James, the bassist, was chilling in the crowd (no one had a clue who he was), and he just slammed a 40 on the ground. Some people. The anonymous factor reminds me very much of when I saw PJ Harvey in Boston in the Summer of 1992, as well. I recognized her just cruising through the audience before the show, and no one had a clue it was her.

I don't think anyone has mentioned them since I've been reading this thread, so I'll throw in Verve or The Verve as they later became known. I'll include 5 of their songs here, including Bittersweet Symphony.

Seems rated perfectly fine to me. Generally recognized as a genius at what he does and deservedly so. He's a fantastic producer and has a knack for pulling a melody out of a mess. He's a good songwriter and vocalist besides. Great performer. Cool videos. Hard to overrate someone typically recognized as of the best artists of the past 25 years.

Equally hard to call him underrated too. His albums still hit the top of the charts, he's got Grammys, tons of people cite him as an influence, he's a shoo-in for the R&R Hall of Fame (as NIN I'd assume). The only thing he doesn't have is the elite-level album sales of pop artists.

A lot of these bands just came out at the wrong time, too early.

A band like Blur is a lot better than like the 5th band that ripped off Creed's sound and littered the airwaves. But those bands that played what the radios spit out made a lot of dough.

Oh yeah The Verve kicked ass too. Urban Hymns was amazing.

EDIT:

Whole CD is great

That CD is great. OK Computer is always cited as the best album from the '90s but it might not even be the best album from 1997 b/c of Urban Hymns.

I used to lie in bed with my ex girlfriend and play that CD before, during, and after doing fun stuff. We had a pretty bad breakup so it's hard to listen to the album anymore without being reminded of my failed relationship but once in a while I'll have a listen.

I'm just not a fan of the Stones. I guess Exile on Main St. when they've got the Keith laxness going is the most I've liked them but no way do I put it in Beatles or Pet Sounds type regard.

Don't really get U2's reputation either. I've heard so many people talk about how they love the 80s/early 90s U2 and then it was all downhill after the Numb video, but almost all the U2 songs I like the most are from last 20 years.

Then again I'm a pretty big pop music fan and have never liked listening to guitar playing and drumming as much as lyrics and singing, so it probably colors my opinion. When it comes to underrated I guess my strongest opinion is that a good portion of the most talented songwriters last 10-15 years have been major pop stars or to a lesser extent rap.

Agree. I like a lot of their songs but can't listen to a full album. Jagger's voice also annoys me.

I find early Stones to be better. The songs where Mick is actually anunciating his words. Their later stuff is mostly garbage and you can't even tell if Mick is drunk or what.

Just noticed this. I used to say "lay" here but discovered "lie" is correct.

A simple way to remember it is to lay is to place something on a floor or what have you ("I'm going to lay this rug on the floor"). To lie is to be in a horizontal position of relaxation. ("My dog likes to lie on the floor.") Is it an act of being or doing?

In before someone who actually studied English proves me wrong.

Third eye blind. Underrated IMO. True there was nothing ground breaking about their sound, but writing catchy rock songs isn't that easy. And they had a lot of them. Motorcycle drive by is a fantastic song.

I'd also add Superchunk, yes they have a good college radio cult following but should have been bigger.

i understand what you mean. my dog is a liar as well...he lies on the floor, in the car, wherever...he's half mongrel, half liar it seems.

Sick thread bump. Dom is on point with this list. As if I wrote it myself. I would add Depeche Mode.

But as for Talk Talk, they are just incredibly underrated. People think of them as this New Wave band that sounded like Duran or whomever. And their first record was. But what they evolved into is remarkable.

This is arguably my favorite song of my lifetime:

Another absolute gem lamenting his brother's struggles with heroin:

too dissonant for you? OK still a bit new wavy but different all at the same time

They start moving away from the new wave sounds with their 3rd record

If you like music do yourself a favor and listen to this band. If the first record turns you off listen to them over time and marvel at their transformation. Not sure there is a band that has evolved like they did and quite literally made 5 records with each arguably better than the prior.

And don't get me started on Pixies and Kate Bush not being in

Love em or hate em, Depeche Mode is probably the most influential band of the last 30 or 40 years. There must be some weird **** going on in the background for them not to be in.

Pixies have to be in already, right?
