Haven't read the entire thread, but this is difficult since some bands are acclaimed by musicphiles, but still underrated in comparison to what they deserve. Plus, some artists are very famous, but should be even more so. I've included both types in my underrated list, and my overrated list has artists where the reverse is true.

Underrated - Husker Du, Bad Brains, The Cult, Cheap Trick, J. Geils Band, Jesus and Mary Chain, Queen, Duran Duran

Overrated - Tom Waits, REM, Radiohead, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, Sonic Youth, Liz Phair, Rage Against the Machine

The Fall - much better than The Smiths
Neu - the real kings of Krautrock

This Neu song, Hero, was released in 1975. Listen and see where the overrated Billy Idol (if anyone actually rates hm) got the riff for Dancing with Myself from.

Anyone probably close to 40+ realizes this band for what they are worth, but for the youngins' out there who don't realize how many bands have been influenced by them....

I made one bad omission for my underrated list - Public Image Limited. I think folks were not ready for them given Johnny Rotten's previous pedigree, sort of like the reception for Paul's Boutique when it came out and people expected License to Ill part 2. And even over time they haven't received the full credit they deserve for some truly excellent music.

Oh, and for the response above to my inclusion of RATM in overrated, to me they're a solid band but I feel like they're not deserving of the almost unabashed worship they receive.

I was actually glad with most of the people who will get added in the upcoming year.
So glad Peter Gabriel got in, if for the only reason he will show up and acknowledge this induction into the Hall. I'm still legitimately surprised Cat Stevens got into the RRHOF, didn't think they would ever want him.

That's what I mean. I love Peter Gabriel, but his solo output is nowhere near that of Dire Straits, Warren Zevon, Pixies, etc. and he's already in as a member if Genesis! How is Peter Gabriel in when Ringo Starr is not?

I mean, if its because of his political activism, great, create another award for that.
