Yup more or less exeptions, but peaty whiskies usally have more taste when they are younger'than a standart speysider.plus if whisky is too young it can have a metalic taste.

Picked up a Willet bourbon 8 yr 120 proof it's pretty damn strong . Just checked out their site and see that Rowan's creek and Noah's hill are both the same line. Thinking about picking one up any recommendations for rye or bourbon ?

Yeah, at a taste festival in Edinburgh last summer 2012. I wasn't sold on it, myself.

Can someone recommend a decent bottle of rye that I could find in the UK? Not looking fr anything particularly expensive at the moment, just something to try it out

Got a bottle of Angel's Envy CS after reading some very positive reviews online. It turned out to be a pretty expensive mistake. Bland whiskey smell. Good taste but not great. Adding water doesn't seem to change much. Very different from the gushing testimonials. It's as if I'm drinking a completely different bourbon.

Very disappointed. It's good but I'd prefer some $20 bourbons over this.

Another thought: Maybe the batch I had just sucked for whatever reason?

I am a huge fan of the Angels Envy. I like the aroma, its good on the palate and i love the port finish, IMO it makes for a great bourbon that is not too sweet. Its been my go to bourbon for the last few months, was drinking bookers or Basil Haydens before that.

Out of curiosity, what bourbons at $20 a bottle are you ranking above the AE?

Hurt. Normal Angels envy and angels envy cs (ie. Cask strength) are two different products from same company
Toss prolly paid in the $150 range for the cask strength he just picked up.

Toss,

Haven't had the cs yet but like you, have read uniformly great reviews - maybe you got a bad bottle? If you feel like making the effort, it might be worth looking up kyle Henderson (Lincoln Henderson's grandson),who's involved in the day to day management of angels envy. He's a pretty active member on the bourbon porn FB group and seems like a nice enough guy who's genuinely interested in promoting the AE brand. Anyhow, maybe he could do something for you.

I actually haven't had the regular angel's envy. As for which $20 bourbons I'd prefer over AE CS: Evan Williams SB, Bulleit, Buffalo Trace, or Elijah Craig 12yr for $5 more.

foobar,

Thanks for the headsup on who to contact and stuff. I'll get some more opinions on this bottle of whiskey to see if it's just me.

Went to a pub tonight and tasted talisker 18, macallan 18, glenfarclas 17, and arran 14. The Talisker was the highlight of the night, such a perfect combination of peat, sweetness, fruit, and long lasting finish. I think this will be the next bottle I buy. The macallan 18 was good too but it lacked the complexity and range of flavors that the talisker had. Very good drink, but I don't know if it's worth the >$150 price that I've seen it at. The glenfarclas was a notch below those two, still very pleasant but I think tasting it back to back with the macallan made it feel a little flat. The arran was not my cup of tea, overly sweet and overall not too remarkable.

My highest recommendation for the talisker 18, I'm only sad that my local store doesn't carry it so I have to order it and it will take a couple of weeks to get my hands on it because of Christmas travel plans.

I agree wrt the Arran malts. Their strength lies in casking, both the calvados finish and the amarone cask finishes are great. The straight up malts are weak: you can tell they are a young distillery.

I'll have to see if I can find that Calvados-casked Arran, thanks for bringing its existence to my attention. A friend had good things to say about the Amarone-cask, and Calvados is a personal favourite of mine...

u picked the wrong glenfarclas
the 15 year & 18 year are much better in my eyes, even so they can`t get the 18 year talisker.
the 21 glenfarclas which has a hint of smoke is in the same class for me with the isle of skye malt.
i`m looking forward the the new talisker in the friends of malt series.
the last one(about 4-5 years ago)was great.

I picked the 17 because I read somewhere online that it was supposed to be as good quality as the Macallan 18 at half the price. Before my visit to the pub I was planning to buy the Macallan 18, but after tasting the Talisker I changed my mind. Yesterday I ordered the Talisker 18 and the Glendronach 15 revival. Merry Christmas to me.

And yesterday as I was buying steaks for dinner I picked up a bottle of Macallan 12 ($45) which is actually pretty good. So in summary, I had my cake and ate it too

Mr F,

It was bottled in 2008 so tricky to track down, I found a bottle in Italy and one in Spain back in 2011 for 120euro a pop. Bought the Italy one. Bit like "coals to Newcastle" since I live in Scotland...

If you find yourself in Edinburgh you're welcome to a snifter of mine!

Received some interesting looking scotches over Christmas that I'm not familiar with and am curious if anyone has tried any of them — I have been imbibing over the holiday season, just haven't cracked these bottles open yet:

Dewar Rattray Glenglassaugh 29 yrs., single, cask strength 53%
Obviously the 29 yrs. caught my eye!

Campbeltown Loch 21 yrs., blended, 46%
Haven't had a blended scotch in quite awhile, except at the odd dive of a bar where they don't offer quality whisky and I'm not paying any attention to what I'm knocking back. This seems like a good blend, at least from what little I've read on the interweb from a taste-test post.

Nikka Whisky cask strength 51.4%
The handsome packaging and bottle are very distinctive and caught my eye. I've never tried a Japanese whisky but I've found good reviews on the interweb.

And finally, last — and most certainly least:

Spoiler:
Ron Burgundy blended, 40%

For some reason I don't yet understand, my wife got me this as a 'joke' Christmas present. She thought it was pretty hilarious, whereas I was thinking that she could have spent the same amount and got me a 1/2 bottle of something I would enjoy more, i.e. Nikka.

Not quite sure when I'm going to get around to trying this one. I'm seriously thinking of leaving it out in the open in the hope that my teenage son might steal it.

I'll try to remember to post my tasting impressions as I crack these open over time...

99,

I haven't had that specific one, but I've had a bunch of rattray bottlings and they've all been great.

Only thing on your list I've had is the nikka. It's a nice rich blend with a lot of pop to it, definitely a worthwhile bottle. I wouldn't use that as a benchmark to decide how you feel about Japanese whiskies, though. They make some good stuff, but their single malts are often a lighter, smoother style.

Lol @ the Ron burgundy whiskey.
