Mann: 50 euro I assume. Here the cheapest I've seen it recently is like $130 and it's getting harder to find. The peaty flavor is definitely on the smoky side and not the briny phenol type.

Play: not familiar with that one.

only good thing, after that i never drank alcohol no more, when i`m sad or depressed.
100% single malt.
is said to be the best bang for the buck, but beware if u want to try it buy it soon.the last bottle of green label was filled in 2012 and it will be discontinued.

blue label:full great whisky,u can taste that it has old whiskies in.only some smoke, verry little grain.
only thing i don`t like is the price
u can get better single malts for much less.

sorry can`t tell u much about the swing.
i haven`t opened my bottle yet.
Didn't wanna leave the impression that I didn't read this lol. Thanks for these. I'll probably buy a Green but not open it until I start off with Black at a restaurant or something. I'm trying to develop a habit of starting with the cheaper whiskies so I can better appreciate the more expensive ones.

I haven't, but on that note, I finally opened my bottle of Lagavulin 16 today. I had a sick 6 hour session where my AQ >>> KK (+ a guy calling with 55):

AI pf - [xTJ]K4

What made the beat so much worse for the villain was the fact that he got excited from turning a set and didn't realize it gave me a straight, and after the pot was shipped to me another guy said he had K2o lol. 200bb pot

+ I won a flip with the table for 90bb's. So I left the table up 2.5BIs

tl;dr - Had a luckbox session and opened my bottle of Lagavulin to celebrate a little.

And yea, Canada apparently sucks wrt alcohol pricing and availability. Can't order any online unless we're prepared to pay a huge duty.

Plus, Ardbeg Galileo is not available here. I have a friend bringing me a bottle when he takes his trip to Europe next month.

Anyone ever try Cleveland Whiskey by any chance? Heard this story on npr about the rapid aging process and was intrigued/skeptical http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/201...paign=20130503

Cliff notes:

Quote:
Bourbon is typically aged over a period of time in which fluctuating temperatures throughout the day move distilled liquor in and out of the pores of oak barrels. Lix uses pressure to speed this up. He pours distillate into a stainless steel vat and throws cut-up pieces of barrel in after it.

He wouldn't let me see his machinery — "intellectual property," he says — but it sounded something like an overloaded washing machine during the spin cycle. Each beat, Lix says, is roughly the equivalent of 24 hours in a stationary barrel. The agitation squeezes the wood like a sponge and the "aging" of each batch is done within a few days.

picked up a WL Weller regular bottle upon the rec' of a HS buddy who works at the liqour store and it's alright. wondering if the 12 year or the special reserve (2 and 7 dollars more, respectively) would've been better.

My girlfriend and I are huge whisky fans!

Here's some of my recent favourites:

Invergordon 1966 (45 year old) 47.1%
Fruity & Sweet (custard, apple, toffee).

If anyone enjoys the sweet caramel whiskies then I highly recommend this one, being 45 years it's also super value for money at £130.

Teeling Small Batch (Flagship)
Irish whiskey with a twist - pretty dynamic, very good for flagship £33 range.

Jim Bean Devil's Cut
A very bold, pokey whiskey (more than you'd expect for at 45%). Again, a great whiskey for entry price range (£25!).

Made in a really interestign way where they put the Devil's Cut back in the spirit...
"To create Jim Beam® Devil's Cut®, an extraordinary new bourbon experience, we developed a proprietary process that actually pulls the rich whiskey trapped inside the barrels' wood after they're emptied. We hold this barrel-treated extract until it develops the proper balance of bourbon notes, then blend it with 6 year old bourbon and bottle at 90 proof. The result: a robust, premium bourbon with deep color, aroma and character."

Been drinkin' the Redemption High-Rye Bourbon. Most reviews that I've seen online are pretty dismissive of it, but I noticed those reviews said it was only aged 1 or 2 years. Mine says "aged at least 3 years"... and it is incredible. Great balance and not harsh at all imo.

Went to a Winery with a restaurant in it today. Saw they had Green Label and bought a fifth after we had lunch.

As expected, they had a damn good selection of whiskies. It was tough having to go with Green Label just because it's out of production, but it's clearly the wisest thing to do. They had Whistle Pig, Booker's, Laphroaig 10, and a bunch of other whiskies that I've been dying to try thanks to you guys lol. Their Lagavulin 16 was $95...and I got it for $65 lol. The Green Label was $61, but I don't recall seeing prices that much lower than that so I just got it

Ten,

Why the fixation on buying the Green Label?

I wanted to check out Johnnie Walker since it seems like a highly praised mixed malt...the most popular, if I'm not mistaken.

So once I decided upon trying JW, as I mentioned earlier, I want to try to start out with the cheaper whiskies then move on to the more expensive ones in the JW series (trying to make it a habit with all whiskies that I try). I won't open my Green Label until I try out the Black and Double Black Labels...I'm ganna skip Red upon recommendation itt lol.

Ultimately, what I'm trying to do is have several choices to choose from whenever I want a glass of whiskey instead of just having the same one everyday. Having killed my Glenfiddich that way a couple weeks ago, I wish I dispersed my nightly glass between multiple bottles.

Idk if this is weird, but I'm saving all the bottles I have finished. So far I have two: Buchanan's mixed, and Glenfiddich 12.

Also, I misspoke earlier itt. I didn't get the single barrel Four Roses, I got the regular one and it's been sort of meh. What else should I expect when I start with the cheapest of them all though, I suppose. I also opened my Eagle Rare a couple weeks ago as well, and I seriously can't believe that stuff is 20-whatever dollars. Based on my experience with Eagle Rare and Maker's Mark, I'm starting to believe what you and ET have mentoined itt - there's a better quality/$ ratio with bourbons as opposed to scotches. I still like scotch more, but once I try Booker's that might change my mind

on friday some of my oldest friends came to visit and we did a caol ila tasting.
sorry my own pictures sucked,so i borrwed some

caol ila is the biggest distillery(6 mill liters a year) on islay with 3 wash stills and 3 spirit stills.
its for sure not the prettiest, since it had a big renovation in the 70s.
its in the north east corner of islay facing the isle of jura.
most of it production goes into the johnnie walker blend and it is the smoky taste in them.
caol ila 12:

this is the standart bottle of caol ila and since diageo brought out the `hidden malt` series, its widespread in pubs in the uk and europe.
nose: phenolic smoke and some citrus fruits(after your nose got over the smoke)
taste:smoke(less than laphroaig),than some sweet and oily.
after taste:long some sea taste and smoke.
caol ila 12 unpeated (2011 release):

this is a limit release and i`m not sure if it is still around.its 57,6% so we added some water.
nose:floral,fruity(apples and pears) some ash
taste:alot of wood, yeast, very dry.1 of us said:like licking the inside of a cask.
after taste:semi long,wood some sea.
we didn`t like the dram
caol ila distillers edition 2000:

its a finished edition in moscatel sherry casks.
nose: phenolic smoke,sweet and fruity
taste:smoke but then sweet with a fresh taste.
after taste:long,smoke,salt some sweet.very rounded.
we liked it alot
will do the 2nd part tomorrow.

Got 0.35 liters of Highland Bird blended Scotch, produced in Glasgow. You probably haven't heard about it (Diablo). This will have to do until Friday, when I'll be buying 0.2 liters of TALISKER.

Tens: gotcha. JW is fine, but part of why it's so popular is it's a super smooth, consistent easy to drink blend. Black label is a perfectly fine blend that I'm happy to drink, but at the price points above that (green, gold, blue, etc) you can IMO get much more interesting and tasty single malts. As for bourbons, I wouldn't put Bookers at the top of the list as far as flavorful bourbons go. The most notable characteristic of bookers is that it carries quite a punch and is remarkably smooth for something that high proof. But there are lots of really delicious bourbons in the $40-60 range. I also agree w you re: the great value of eagle rare 10.

Mann: <3 caol ila.

Eagle Rare seems to be the most loved bourbon itt at that price point. Since the time I began reading this thread, I have not heard one bad review of it. I also obviously agree.

caol ila 1997 connoisseurs choice 12 years:

this 1 is coming out of first&refill sherry casks.
nose:some smoke, sweet plus a taste of smoked meat.
taste:starts with some pepper but gets sweet with only some smoke soon.oily
aftertaste:long,mild oily sweet.

ps:sorry i know there is allready a tasting note of this whisky in this threat
but i think it was the 1996 version.

Anyway it remains one of the best scotches I've ever had, opened up my taste to that whole style.
