Mr. Beckman,

I found your contact information on the Buffalo Trace barrel selection web page and am writing today because I'm interested in purchasing a barrel in honor my son, who's expected to be born tomorrow morning.

As I understand it, the process of buying a barrel involves first coming to the distillery and making a selection. BT then bottles and ships to my local retailer where I make payment and accept delivery. That said, I'm hoping you might be open to an alternative arrangement. What I'd ideally like to do is come visit you and select a young (3 years maybe?) barrel of either bourbon or, ideally, rye, and immediately bottle a small portion of the contents. From there, I'd like to bottle a small amount of the whiskey each year on, or around, my son's birthday until it's all gone, likely around the time he turns 21. In a perfect world, I could have custom labels for the whiskey bearing his name and two age statements - one with the age of the whiskey, and one with the age of my son.

It's hard for me to quantify why I want to do this. I guess because I identify with being an american whiskey drinker, and with the BT brand. And maybe because it's just now, with a son of my own on the way, that I'm starting to realize my dad had a life of his own before I was around - that he is more than "just my dad". I want my son to know I'm not just that lame old man telling him to clean up his room and do his homework. I want him to know that I was excited enough about his birth to make the effort to do something fun and different for him.

I realize that this is an unusual request, and likely a non-starter. But, being a longtime fan of many of your products, I know that BT is open to new experiments and I believe this could present an unique marketing opportunity for your company. As I have to guess that a large portion of your customer base are father's themselves, I imagine there are many ways you could effectively market this idea to further cement the BT brand as the premiere american whiskey producer.

Thank you for your consideration - I hope to hear from you soon.

Best regards,

foobar
Best of luck! Let us know when you get word from them. If successful your next letter needs to be to my wife to sell her on the idea for me for our second who is also expected soon (2 months). Congrats on your second kid and best of luck in the next few weeks! We are going in reverse order of you (girl on the way) but both same ages apart.

V well written letter. I'd be down for a share of the barrel on the small chance that BT does something.

i did.
its only lightly peated and a bit fruity.

in my opinion not worth the $$ they ask for it.

Starting to get into whiskey after my friend introduced me to Lagavulin. I had a bottle of Glenfiddich 12 in my apt for a year and wasn't really able to appreciate it until now.

I had a basic question though, how much water is exactly a "splash of water"? I was under the assumption is was roughly a tablespoon or two of water, but when I ordered it from this one particular bar, the bartender seemed to fill a third of the glass with water

Yeah 1/3 glass is way too much, two tablespoons is way too much. I'm with manndl, a teaspoon or so. Maybe a tablespoon if you've poured a triple lol.

Thanks guys. And yeah, that 1/3 glass incident was when I first tried Lagavulin as well. What a waste lol, idiot bartender.

Just saw 2 bottles of Eagle Rare 17 - 2008 edition in a corner at my local store last night. They also had a 2009 but I read the reviews and found that the 08 was better. $70 a piece. I think I might pick them both up and hold on to them for a special occasion.

Just picked up both of those 2008 bottles. I even convinced the owner to sell them to me for $60 a piece since they had been sitting there for 5 years.

Score.

have u tasted the glen grant 10 years or the tomintoul peaty tang yet?
both are pretty cheap and good price/performance ratio.
both are ex bourbon casks.

glen grant 10
nose:dry with fruits and spices.(some vanilla)
taste:fruity with nuts and almonds.
after taste:semi long and smooth with again nuts and almonds.

tomintoul peaty tang
nose:smoky with hints of flowers(erica)
taste:smoky with a strong malt taste.some nuts.
after taste:semi long with aromatic smoke.
if u are more into blended whisky now try the famous grouse range.
if u are like smoky whisky in the lower price range,
i would also recommend ileach peaty.

or a ardmore traditional cask.

Thanks, manndl. Will try out sometime. I think it's healthy for the private economy to be open-minded about these things. To be able to drink also something else than single malt

if i remember right u are from the UK.
so a tesco should be in your reach.
tesco has a range of two 12year old single malt whiskys(highland+islay malt,£20 each)
i would check them out.
but they have a cheap malt(£25.00) i know.
Isle Of Jura Superstition

nose:smoke,some honey and marzipan.
taste:starts as a smoke bomb but shortly after u will get spices with some honey.
after taste:some smoke,spices some pepper.

manndl - how is the Ardmore? I see it for sale pretty cheaply fairly regularly but never got round to picking any up. I think I figured that cos it was always so cheap it wouldn't be much good, although that's obviously garbage because Talisker is always on sale somewhere too and that's always amazing stuff.

Do you have any recommendations for a £60-£80 bottle? I'm going to be going to a great little shop on Sunday that stocks almost every currently available Scotch. I was going to replace my recently finished Caol Ila 18yo but that's one of the few that they are actually out of stock of.

i really like the ardmore.
it is 1 of the few smoky highland whiskys.
one think i like is if u drink it pure it has vanilla taste, but if u put some water in it gets fruity too.
has a long after taste .
its only missing the full complexity of a older malt but as i said great price/performance ratio.

not easy because i`m not sure what tastes u like or hate.
out of my head i would go with cardhu 18,ardbeg uigeadail and almost the whole talisker range(18,distillers edition and 57`north)
bit cheaper is the jura elixir(35-40),which came out new when i visited the distillery in oct.
was my favorite of jura even so they went grazy on us and gave us 8-10 samples of different whiskys.(most much more expensive)
will write a full review of that whiskys over the next days.

Hey guys,

So, unsurprisingly, my pitch to BT didn't work. I did at least get a prompt e-mail reply (below) and follow-up phone call, so that's nice I guess:

Hi foo

I hope you are reading this as the proud father of a healthy boy!

It is a pretty good idea and I have looked into something similar. In short there are several issues that prevent a process like this. Taxes, price increases, over aging, evaporation, warehouse space, distribution, processing the whiskey, ...etc.

I am afraid this is not something we can do at this time. I wish I could be more help!

I would be happy to explain some of these issues in a bit more detail if you want or I would be happy to discuss our current program with you.

Cheers for now,

Beau Beckman

Oh well, was worth a shot.

BTW, long story, but no baby yet. I am, however, writing this post from the hospital where the induced labor a few hours ago, so hopefully this boy will be on the scene soon.

Which scotch would everyone like if there were to be some sort of 2+2 cask that we all would chip in for? I'd vote for an islay scotch. Ardbeg, Laphroaig, or Lagavulin.

I like rich and strong tasting whisky. Islay and the other islands mainly, as well as the West coast distilleries such as Oban. I currently have a bottle of the Talisker 18 which is really nice. Not too keen on the distillery editions though as I'm not a fan of the sweet fruity finish they get from the casks used. I love Ardbeg so the Uigeadail could be a contender. The Coryveckran also looks interesting.

sorry to burst your bubble but those distillerys wont sell u a cask .
the only island distillery that will is Kilchoman.
its the smallest and newest of the 8 working distilleries.
it opened 2004.

ic so u will probably like talisker 57`north and Ardbeg Corryvreckan and the uigeadail.
all 3 are high proof whiskys with strong tates.
and are smoky,
the corryvreckan and uigeadail beeing the smoke bombs.
the uigeadail beeing a bit sweeter since it comes out of 10% sherry casks.
all 3 are premium whiskies.
soon the ardbeg day will come out again.
usally a great whisky too.

Bought this today to try something different from the shot of Glenfiddich 12 that I've been having once a day. Blended scotch definitely isn't for me...I'm probably ganna sound dumb trying to describe Buchanan's but yeah, there aren't really any flavors to articulate aside from the fact that it's sweet. My first shot was with a splash of water, the second was completely neat. Idk if it's fair to say it's not that good (imo) because I got it from a supermarket but yeah
