Yeah, reviews and your comments seem in agreement that the taste is quite unique. Maybe I'll open it first. Haven't had the Glenmorangie Artein so I will be going in blind.

Not sure what caused my friends liver condition. He just got the word from his doctor 3 or 4 days ago. He is still in the denial stage: I was told about it from a mutual friend of ours and he heard about it while having a beer with the guy. D'oh! He is also away for the weekend at a whisky festival. To be fair, he already had plans to go, flight and hotel, etc. He claims he will only be tasting, no swallowing. Uh huh… okay.

My buddy isn't a crazy alcoholic or anything. He enjoys good beer, fine wine and exemplary whisky. He is one of those guys that goes on a yearly trip to Scotland to play golf and go on distillery tours — with the focus on the distilleries — they only play on links that are nearby… they definitely have their priorities straight, at least imo!

I'm sure I'll be finding out more about the liver details in the future. Hopefully it's one of those things where he can stop for a while, maybe clean up any other health related issues and then make a comeback, even if at a reduced participation level.

More of a Bourbon guy but occasionally enjoy single malts. Had a few last night. Wild Turkey 101, Four Roses Single Barrel and "Poor Man's Pappy".

Really enjoying the Four Roses. Need to pick up the yellow label and small batch. Looking forward to the limited edition releases this year (need to asking around to see who gets it).

Since there are no pictures on this page yet, I'll post my collection as of right now. Couple of nice rums in there also.

I got a new console for my collection delivered yesterday, here's a few pictures. Got about ~30 more whisk(e)ys in my cupboard still. This one is right next to my dinner table and I already can tell that it's going to be a problem looking at them all the time.

Sweet! How many bottles fit in there? I'll probably look into getting something similar in the future when I've got enough stock to fill it (only at about 25 bottles now).

Will probaby get something like this first for the office

There's like 30 bottles in there right now. I can't cram it more because the glass shelves only hold 25 lbs each and I don't want to run the risk of them breaking.

Guller, some nice bottles in there.

Spending time in Nicaragua turned me into a big Flor de cana fan. How do you rank the Flor 21 vs the zacapa?

That is one of the few bottles in there that I haven't tried yet. When I find rarer bottles I tend to send them to my retirement collection. My goal is to have a huge collection of bottles that I really like and am positive that I will like to sip on again later. They also have to not be readily available to make the cut. These are not "retirement" as in $ value collectible, I am absolutely going to drink all of these at some point. As you can see I am just getting started, the whole thing might go south at some point.

I picked up Flor 21 in Honduras late last year. I am going again next month. The tiny store that I found that in had 4 other bottles in stock. That is my next target for a sample bottle. I hope they still have some, I'll let you know how it turns out. As far as the other year Flor's? I like the 18 more than Zacapa, so I'm sure this one is fine. I love Zacapa but sometimes it's overly sweet for my tastes.

Sorry for the brief rum talk whisky fans.

Oops, I guess that bottle is toast then. I've been on a scotch kick lately and have not had bourbon/rye for Manhattans. Thanks for the tip.

Over the past year I've had about 10 different whiskys that I all really enjoyed, but the only one I can't seem to like is BenRiach 12. It's ABV is at 46% but I believe the european version is 40% . I am not sure what it is about the taste, but something about it is off putting. I've had higher ABVs also without issues so that is not the problem for me at least. I'll probably try it with a splash of water when I get the chance.

Has anyone gotten the chance to try it? It is the non sherry version.

i know some guys that think that the earthy smell(old cider cellar)is a bit offputting but most people i know like it.

IIRC the Benriach 12 Horizons does not have that earthy smell and it's bottled at 50%. You should try it.

Mann, since you are the expert on Benriachs, which of these would you recommend? I am getting some samples and would like to try a couple.

BenRiach 15 Year Old (Pedro Ximénez Sherry Cask Finish)
BenRiach 15 Year Old (Tawny Port Cask Finish)
BenRiach 13 Year Old 1999 Virgin American Oak Finish
BenRiach 18 Year Old 1996 Pedro Ximénez Sherry Finish (cask 3607)
BenRiach 25 Year Old
BenRiach 25 Year Old Authenticus Peated

I love sherried whiskies but somehow Gelnfarclas and Dalmore don't rock my boat. Glendronach, Glengoyne, and Aberlour are my favorites when it comes to sherried whiskys.
