ET,

I also had some boss hog this weekend! I had it at a friend's house. I'm sure it was some absurd price at a bar. Also, "how much it cost."

English is hard! I had it at Anvil in Houston, nice place for cocktails and they had a decent selections of whisky too.

I wish it was this easy in Atlanta. Last year people had to camp out for 10-12 hours without even knowing which variation they were going to get in the Van Winkle collection or the BTAC. George T. Stagg is what I'm hunting for this year and every year. There's a bottle shop out in the suburbs I found near my parents' house and they've agreed to mule for me this year.

Had Old Rip Van Winkle 10 today just because the restaurant I ate at had it. It's pretty good and needs a good amount of water...like a little less than Whistle Pig does. But like I mentioned earlier itt...

Had the Ardberg Auriverdes at a friend's house this weekend. I'm not a big Ardberg fan but this was a delicious whisky. Very peaty but also smooth and without as much of the sulfur note which is the one that makes me not like Ardbergs as much.

This friend also bought the Ardberg Supernova and he promised to invite me for a tasting when the bottle arrives. Will report back when I try it.

@hurt: fwiw, I prefer the 20 to the 23

@pr: unless these are all old bottles (which it doesn't look like given the lack of tax strips) that's a pretty unremarkable/bottom shelf lineup...at least from what I can make out in the picture.

I kinda figured that, but the ticket only cost £20, and we're probably getting a ninth bottle in too, so not bad value. Will report back on anything interesting.

#7 is "Old Grandad" I think.

Edit - Yep, I'm sure.

I had the 23 a few days ago. It was really good, don't get me wrong, but there is no way it's worth the ridiculous amounts people are willing to pay for it. There are many great bourbons at a fraction of the cost.

DF,

I have had lots of Rittenhouse but didn't recognize that bottle so I had to go look it up. Apparently it's a special lower abv 80 proof version for euros!

got a bottle of Michel Couvreur 12 Year Old Overaged yesterday,

First impression was why the **** did they put hardened plastic over the cork. This really tilted me and i couldn't even enjoy it after dealing with that mess, but my overall impression was pretty meh, too sweet and the peat flavors mixed very strangely with the sweetness,.

Hahaha, I remember being tilted trying to open my first Michel Couvreur bottle too. The second one was much easier though.

I don't think I've ever tasted any peat in that whisky, but I will investigate soon. Ate you a fan of sherried whiskies in general?

Whiskey drinkers,

In case anyone happens to be lurking the thread. I'm here now:

Anything other than all the obvious good stuff that is a must-try?

Was browsing K&L and noticed that they have a peated version of Michel Couvreur overaged. Was this the bottle you tried?

El D,

I'd definitely recommend compass box, Glen Garioch, benriach/glendronach. There's plenty there of course but all varying degrees of good. My friends this year loved the Glen Garioch virgin oak.

Just noticed some smoked maple knob creek bourbon on that list.

Can't find it in the UK though

Kavalan sherry cask is a must try I'd say. Amazing sherry bomb. 2 or 3 shades darker than Glenfarclas 105 and no coloring added. Fantastic syrupy sweet smell and taste. Some nuttiness and very little of that astringency you might find in another cask strength whisky.

You were correct. There wasn't anything that stood out at all. In fact they tasted mostly very similar. I like my American whiskey to be rich and full flavoured but these were all fairly bland.

Any recommendations for a good strong, rich bourbon or rye? I haven't had too much American in the past, but my favourites have been Elijah Craig 12 and Copper Fox Rye.
