El D,

you are complete right imo. The 1988 was rly rly great but like I said there was smth rly "strange" in the tast of the Select Reserve when I tasted it - cant rly put it into words.

Nobody here has tasted the new Lasanta? Just asking bc I am thinking about buying some of the old one as long as I can get some.

That's a shame. Do you think it's just a marketing gimmick to offload a bunch of barrels of underaged whisky at an inflated price?

Have you tried the Port Ruighe?

I found the Storm...what are the right words...too sulphurous, and too grainy (as in the grain, not gritty!). Ardbog fans might enjoy it based on that argument, so I appreciate all palates are different: you can keep brimstone and acetone, ta

It's been a while since I last had some so in the next couple of days I'll do a side-by-side with Talisker 10 and write up some notes.

I haven't tried the regular storm but I really liked the dark storm. I'm going to pick up another bottle this Fri at the duty free if they still have it.

I just decided to go with a bottle of the 2000 Distillers Edition, and a bottle of the 10yo to go with it.

How about the 57 North? Anybody tried that?

Ah man, wish I'd seen that. Would have got that instead of the Distiller's Edition. Oh well, next time maybe.

a old friend came by and we had some drams.
we opened the nikka and were surprised by the ripe plum taste.
after we decided that the madaira irish was too sweet we want into peat land.
the benriach was still to mellow for us(some old cellar with sweet peat )so we went to islay and stayed there for a while....

i had a great serendipitous moment today!
my local whisky dealer still has some springbank 10y 100 proof!
and it was cheap <50€

but since i have so many opened bottles at the moment it will probably take some more years before it gets opened.

Picked up a bottle of Lagavulin at Costco for $58. The lowest I've seen there was $70 a couple years ago. Granted I rarely look around that section, but I did on Sunday and was very very happy.

That's a fantastic price for the 16. I got mine for $65 a while ago and have never seen it cheaper than that.

I said the same thing when I picked up my second bottle of Laphroaig 18 for $80. It becomes a problem after a while.

Last edited by El_Timon; 09-23-2014 at 12:41 AM. Reason: Still $80 at Total Wine!

Forgot to mention that Saturday I tried the Whistle Pig Boss Hog and liked it a lot. Don't remember tasting notes because it was a big night of drinking, but it was definitely spicy and intense. I could barely take it neat (it's cask strength) so I poured a couple of generous tablespoons of water in it and the taste didn't suffer at all. No idea how much it costed because I wasn't paying for drinks, but it didn't seem cheap.

El T,

Yeah haha, oh well. I'll buy it one day for sure

manndl and DC11,

I remember buying Lag 16 from Costco last year for $70. Quite the price drop. It's $66 at klwines

So, it's a general drop in price? I'm okay with that.

I still see it some mom-n-pop-higher-end liquor stores for full price. I'm just glad it's not in regular grocery stores. That would kind of spoil it.

Haha idk man. They sell Macallan at Ralphs and I still enjoy it. I think they don't sell Islays in general because the average drinker probably wouldn't like it, but I would take a good Islay over Pappy any day

I also smoke Nat Sherman's, and I like that they're mostly only found in smoke shops and smaller bodega type shops.

If Lagavulin was sold in a grocery store, it would probably become a bit more common. It's a dumb reason, I know. But, my snobbishness wants to keep it that way. Ron Swanson already did a ton for the brand, though that might be why it's cheaper because they're selling a lot more now.

It's similar to indie bands that I feel like belong to only me before they get huge
