"The owls are not what they seem."

Episode 9: Coma (2.002)

Synposis
Quote:

Written by Harley Peyton.
Directed by David Lynch.
Original Airdate: October 6, 1990

Agent Cooper receives some unwanted help and some unwelcome news; Audrey Horne gets into deeper trouble than she realizes; Donna Hayward arranges to meet a stranger; and Leland Palmer makes a horrifying discovery.

Another great episode directed by David Lynch. I just love the 4 barbershop singers taking a break behind Cooper as he talks at his table.

And the revelation that Andy is sterile is a shock and a funny moment. Love his 'A routine physical examination revealed that I'm sterile. Sure I thought it meant that I didn't have to take a bath....'

And Albert's comments about Jacques Renaut's autopsy are priceless.

And Audrey gets in deeper and deeper...

Anyone else seen this one yet?

Albert:
while I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I'm a naysayer and hatchetman in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another, because I choose to live in the company of Ghandi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method...is Love. I love you, Sheriff Truman.

[Albert leaves]

Cooper: Albert's path is a strange and difficult one.

Episode 10: The Man Behind Glass (2.003)

synposis:
Quote:

Written by Robert Engels.
Directed by Lesli Linka Glatter.
Original Airdate: October 13, 1990

Cooper and Truman discover that the trail to Laura's killer takes an unexpected new direction; Blackie O'Reilly sees a golden opportunity; James Hurley and Madeleine Ferguson strike an unforeseen chord; and Dr. Jacoby undergoes hypnosis.

Oh Maddy, Maddy, Maddy....James, James, James... boy that James gets through girls fast...

A good episode, lots of interesting stuff going on. First Leland recognises Bob, and goes and tells the sheriff and Cooper about seeing him when he was a little boy, and how he'd flick matches at Leland and say 'You want to play with fire, little boy?'. Stangely, no one mentions this would have been years ago, so Bob would be ancient by now...

The one-armed man sees a picture of Bob, and freaks out in a memorable little scene... but vows to hunt Bob down. (some history there).

We meet a new character, Richard Tremayne, who appears to have impregnated Lucy and eats with his fork downwards...

And they arrest someone for the murder of Jacques Renault, as revealed by Dr Jacoby under hypnosis, remembering that night.

Oh, and this contains my favourite piece with Albert in the whole series (as written at the top). Albert is so great!

Priceless moment of the episode: Ed's face when he realises Nadine has completely flipped, when Nadine says 'You're only 18 once!'

Ok, I'm up to episode 9. Here are my thoughts (great episode, btw)

I like those barbershop guys too.

Lol, Andy and the tape! I hate it when I’m walking around with tape in my hair and no one tells me it’s there. Also, I liked the shot of Andy pacing around in front of the doorway while Lucy is watching the fly buzzing in front of her.

“Sure I thought it meant that I didn't have to take a bath....” This guy is a piece of work. And did I get this right? Does he say “and I’ve always liked whales”?

Andy’s confronting Lucy was great and it made me like him better.

“but what I want to know is why you’re having one and how?” I was cheering him on because that’s exactly what I want to know. Let's get to the bottom of this Lucy thing already.

Jerry is always eating or talking about food.

Omg, I see bad things for Leland’s future. That grin he gave Ben in his office (when Ben learned he had informed their buyer of the fire) was priceless! I fear he is going to meet an unfortunate end.

I have to tell you, DB, that the parts with James and Donna and Laura’s cousin are my least favorite. I don’t like this dreamy vibe and all the poignant looks. That song was over the top for me

Will try to watch episode 10 later today or tomorrow.

Another good one, DB! So many good moments in this episode.

“Confining my conclusions to the planet earth…” Aw, Albert, he is kinda cool. He actually has a heart!

Lucy’s Predicament –
Oh dear, what on earth is up with this guy Dick and his funny clothes? Lol! Now there’s an oddball. He and Lucy at that diner counter was pretty hilarious. “Do you find it odd that I don’t switch my fork when I eat? That I lift it to my mouth with my left hand?” “My mother calls it piling.”
(Haha, weren’t we discussing this exact thing a few weeks ago, DB?)

“You made promises to me. You said you were going to take me to dinner at the Space Needle in Seattle, even though you took me to family night at the Pancake Plantation instead. I still couldn’t help but think that it meant something special. When in fact the only thing special we did that night was drink two bottles of champagne and end up on a display bed in Horne’s home furnishing!” I kind of feel for this girl.

Audrey’s predicament-
I’m not convinced Ben Horne will actually pay ransom to get Audrey back. I don’t think he even likes her .

“Let me give you the best advice that you’re going to get all week. Men fall under the spell of Audrey’s charms like ducks in a shooting gallery. And if you don’t want a load of buckshot in your tail feathers, may I suggest that you park your jalopy outside of someone else’s window.”

Nadine’s predicament

Alright did anyone else laugh at that song he picked to sing to his wife in the hospital bed? On Top of Old Smokey? Lol, what the heck?

One thing I’m not crazy about in this series is the drug theme. It seems to me that a lot of the other characters (besides Laura) are into doing drugs and I find that to be laying it on sort of thick. I guess I'm thinking about Ben Horne and the one-armed guy. (Blackie says Ben was into it, right?) Maybe I misheard. Just wanted to throw that out there. It’s one of my only complaints. Sorry, db!

Eh, I think the one-armed guy's needle was medication, not recreational. Didn't he say he was on some sort of medication earlier in the series, or am I dreaming?

I think Blackie implied Ben Horne got her hooked on heroin early on.

Hm, I'm sure you're right and that I just misunderstood. I'll have to go back and rewatch. Other than that I thought it was a really strong episode. A lot going on in this one! (Where is Josie! Where is Catherine? Did they ever find her? I think I missed that part .)

Episode 11: Laura's Secret Diary (2.004)

Written by Jerry Stahl, Mark Frost, Harley Peyton and Robert Engels.
Directed by Todd Holland.
Original Airdate: October 20, 1990

Cooper is stymied by an unusual request from Ben Horne to save Audrey's life; Donna Hayward goes to another picnic; Lucy's love life gets complicated; and Josie Packard introduces her cousin from Hong Kong.

A reasonable episode, but with a fantastic opening scene with Leland talking to the sheriff and Cooper. Very moving scene, with him talking about his loss. A new character introduced in the form of a circuit judge (and his office clerk), and a local customer at the diner called 'Toad', and more mysterious stuf involving Josie (whose English is dramatically improving since the pilot) And Cooper is getting set up in the worst possible way. Oh, and a mysterious food critic too.

Oh and there's kinky sex and a little violence during a thunderstorm near the end...

Donna: I don't know what to do, so I swim away. I feel like I want to run, but I don't. Tim swims up to me. He kisses my hand, and then me. I can still feel that kiss. His lips are warm and sweet. My heart jumps. He's talking to me but I can't hear. Ooooohhhh.

Only the kiss. I never saw him again. That was the first time I ever fell in love.

Episode 12: The Orchid's Curse (2.005)

Written by Barry Pullman.
Directed by Graemem Clifford.
Original Airdate: October 27, 1990

Cooper reveals Audrey Horne's whereabouts to Truman; Leland Palmer attends his court hearing; Donna Hayward and Maddy Ferguson plot to steal Laura Palmer's secret diary; and Benjamin Horne receives a mysterious visitor and a business proposition.

Wow, some episode. This is my favourite so far of the ones not directed by Lynch. Some of the shots are fantastic, and this director has a real eye for composition and using his actors fully in that. He is taking a lot of care in these shots, even to the littlest details (eg ash falling from Donna's cigarette). The scene where Donna talks about her and Laura sneaking out when they were 14 (the dialogue above is just part of that) is outstanding. I'd forgotten how sexual (but non-explicitly) some of Twin Peaks is.

The guy in the crane-lift cracked me up too.

Also, assorted mayhem of murder and death (by knife in 2 cases). And it ends on a cliffhanger...

I agree with you, this is a great episode and probably the best acting Lara Flynn Boyle's ever done. She was incredible in that one scene you describe. I went back and rewatched it a couple times because I couldn't believe how good she was.

Oh and Cooper flipped me out. The contrast between him acting so tender towards Audrey and then turning around and punching the other girl in the stomach, well it was shocking. Shocking I tell you! He is pretty cool.

How did Harry and Cooper think they could get in and get out of One Eyed Jacks without any backup? Or did they have backup? I thought that Hawk secretly followed them there.

What do you think of Jean Renault? I think he's an incredible character myself. That guy is so smooth, and has a very quiet charming delivery. I've never seen anyone pull this type of character off so well.

Yes it was a great scene.

Hawk followed them secretly.

Jean Renaut is a a stone-cold lethal killer, but very smooth.

I think we're only a few episodes off of finding out who killed Laura Palmer. Any inklings about who did it, Katy?

no way.

Why don't you list some of the main characters, and say why they may or may not be the killer. So far, they know it's a man that raped her first that probably isn't Jacques Renaut or Leo Johnson, to start you off...

This show is just creeping me out Dominic and diecarter!!

The whole Leo scenario is CREEPY. Who on earth would want to have this creepy, shell of a guy sitting at their kitchen table while making out in front of him? You just know he's going to come back to life at some point and try to murder them.

And that Harold dude. Gawwd. First I liked him. He seemed so sweet and sensitive. Then he takes that little hand rake and does a job on his own face. Geeez, DB. What have you got me watching here?

Not to mention Leland

Episode 13: Demons (2.006)

Written by Harley Peyton and Robert Engels.
Directed by Lesli Linka Glatter.
Original Airdate: November 3, 1990

Cooper and Truman stage a daring raid on One-Eyed Jacks; Donna Hayward and Maddy Ferguson find themselves at the mercy of an enraged Harold Smith; Shelly Johnson and Bobby Briggs hold a "welcome home" party for Leo Johnson; and Cooper's bureau chief pays a call.

Yes, this is a pretty weird one. Audrey is rescued!

We have Shelley and Bobby whooping it up in front of the catatonic(?) Leo, and Leo falling face-first into his welcome home cake, we have the one-armed man revealing he is possessed by the spirit 'Mike' who is ready to battle with the killer 'Bob', and who knows what he looks like.

We also get a visit from Agent Cooper's superior Gordon (played by the great director David Lynch), which is pretty cool, and a mention of a major character to come, 'Windham Earl'.

One little bit of trivia: the actors playing Benjamin Horne and Dr Jacoby were Tony and Riff in the movie 'West Side Story'.

Synopsis:

Episode 14: Lonely Souls (2.007)

Written by Mark Frost.
Directed by David Lynch.
Original Airdate: November 10, 1990

The identity of Laura Palmer's killer is finally revealed after Cooper and Truman's investigation receives some vital help from the one-armed man; finances strain the relationship between Shelly and Bobby; Audrey Horne confronts Ben with what she knows about One-Eyed Jack's; and Leland Palmer tries to discourage Maddy from going home.

Well....some usual Lynchian weirdness, with 'Mike' inspecting the guests at the Great Northern as a large number of sailors bounce balls in the lobby. There's a strange and funny scene in the diner where Shelley has to give up her job that's filmed like some sort of love scene...I was half expected the two waitresses to kiss. Then the nutty Nadine turns up... Big Ed's face when Nadine goes on is some picture...I laughed out loud.

So, we finally find out the killer. And I was sort of wrong Katy, this is about as weird as it gets for the TV show. Except maybe the last few episodes. The prequel movie 'Fire Walk With Me' is even more intense though.

I remember the media nuttiness before the episode was screened. There was wild speculation about who the killer was (and some of the suspects included Andy, Cooper, the Sherriff, and even 'Diane' - who Cooper talks to on his dictaphone). They were taking bets at the bookies on it, it was that intense.

But of course, no one was really sure it was who it was.

I guess if you don't want spoilers, you best not read any more posts here.

No I did not see it coming! I thought for sure it would be Ben. (Also suspected Hawk and Ed for some reason )

This episode was crazy. As I said above, the whole Shelly/Bobby thing is weirding me out. Why would they want that guy living with them for the love of god?

Why was Mike inspecting the guests? I didn't catch that. And lol at your description of the diner conversation with Shelley and Norma. I didn't think it resembled a love scene at all. What have you been drinking?

The scene with Leland is about the most intense thing I've ever watched on a TV show. There's this moment where he is sort of holding her and hugging her to him and she is crying and he looks insane. I can't believe that Lynch was able to get that kind of performance out of an actor. Unbelievable.
