not Twin Peaks, but shares the ancestry...

Experiment in Terror 1962

★★★½

The first 15 minutes or so of this is terrific - It clearly inspired David Lynch with Twin Peaks (the female protagonist lives in Twin Peaks!) and Wild At Heart, and the sweaty, wheezy, shadowy bad guy with the rasping voice just gets to you.

Tie that with the hot-night-in-the-city saxophone score dripping off the walls (by Henry Mancini), and the cute sister who seems a prototype for Audrey Horne in Twin Peaks being threatened, intimidated and made to strip off, and you have a film with some very tense moments.

Unfortunately the movie doesn't live up to the great opening, and becomes a police procedural whenever the police are focussed on, diffusing the great atmosphere and tension somewhat. If it had sustained the atmosphere throughout, this would be a 9/10 movie.

Hadn't heard, looks like 9/16 in the States, Criterion. Will also include new restorations of Lynch's "Six Short Films" which have been released previously and a new documentary as well as old ones.

Hopefully there are great things in store for the Mulholland Dr. and Lost Highway Blu-Rays.

I'm well into disc two of the set... I can feel a distinct difference when Lynch is not the director. I can almost surmise that the series works in an extreme abbreviated form which would be as such: Pilot, ep1, ep2, Fire come walk with me. At the end of ep2 cooper awakes from a dream and abruptly makes a phone and claims... "I know who killed Laura Palmer!" and Fire walk with me exposes us to the truth.

The rest of the series is just the jouney... albeit a very entertaining David Lynchian Sherlock Holmes journey.

Russ Tamblyn is great in his roll that is not neither War of the Gargantuas or West side story.

Just one in a series of poor choices I made this week

I really did enjoy listening to you and Mike talk about this series that you both love, all the obscure details and references to episodes that sparked my own memory. It sort of lifted my spirits. I enjoy hearing people talk about things they are passionate about. Very cool.
