Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me 1992 - Deleted/Extended Scenes

4/5

THIS IS NOT A REVIEW OF FIRE WALK WITH ME, but rather a review of the extra scenes of deleted/extended elements from the movie that are part of the new boxset 'Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery'. This is 91 minutes of extra material.

There are some scenes in here that are of interest only because Lynch directed them, and Lynch has a wonderful eye. Examples are David Bowie appearing in the FBI offices, Chris Isaac fistfighting a surly sheriff, and Laura and Donna talking. Others step it up a notch and are more impactful and memorable... Donna and Laura driving in night with two guys, Chris Isaac interrogating an old guy while weird electrical discharges disrupt the sight and hearing... then there is a level of the real interesting stuff. More scenes in the Black Lodge, some details about Annie, and most impactful of all, a scene that means everything or nothing to a Twin Peaks fan, but probably the most memorable element of this set - Laura losing herself as she looks up at a rotating ceiling fan.

Try and see this soon if you're a TP fan.

Watched the Pilot a while ago and couldn't get through the scene with the woman crying on the phone. Got too uncomfortable and stopped watching. Show's not for me I guess.
It seemed like the scene took forever.

It's the height of American TV (which isn't saying much really). It's in its own class. I don't know of any other television show that can be described as beautiful.

Let's be honest: most TV gets worse on multiple viewings. Shows go on for far too long. The only thing that keeps them propped up is economic incentive and water-cooler PR. Nearly every popular American TV show is ephemeral. If you don't get any nostalgic pleasure out of an old show, it's worthless.

Not with Twin Peaks. Its allusions to other works of art are numerous and complex, and some scenes can only be truly enjoyed on the second or third viewing. But the complexity doesn’t bog you down. It can be enjoyed on a passive level. It just looks cool, the approach is interesting.

When you watch it, you’re reminded of The Shining, The Searchers (not just because of Hank Worden), and a billion other great movies and books. Dale Cooper reminds me of Young Goodman Brown and a lot of the motifs are Hawthornian. A lot of shots remind me of the blacks of Frans Hals.

Some of the paintings that come to mind when I think of Twin Peaks:

Unpopular opinion alert: I just quite s2 halfway through because it was becoming a chore.

S1 was elite, tho.

S2 does get back in the last 7 or so episodes, and is worth the slog. The last episode is as good as any in S1.

So I'm starting this series over again.

PILOT

Ok, so I watched both the original pilot and the international version.

The two diverge just before the end of the original pilot, with Laura's mother having a vision of the glove picking up the locket in the original, and remembering something she saw in Laura's room in the international pilot (she saw Bob, lol). Where the original pilot ends there, the international spins into a tale of actually finding the killer and killing him, plus some other stuff (that ended up in the series a few episodes down the line).

I do prefer the original somewhat (because I have seen Twin Peaks 3 or 4 times through already, and know all about the 'real' story), and it's a magnificent piece of television.

Firstly, Cooper is one of the greatest TV characters ever. Secondly, it gives us a host of characters to get to know, many of them a little odd or with their own secrets, and it is kind of enthralling.

I do accept some of my pleasure is nostalgia-based, but even so, this still feels fresh and exciting and rich.

Damn fine TV/movie.

More on the pilot.

This is how to do a pilot. It lays out the feel and texture of the town, and gives us just enough new characters with their own intrigues, plus a few twists once we know them (like Sheriff Truman having a thing with Josie Packard), to suck us in.

The acting is on the stylised side - but, this is a Lynch movie, what else would it be. The key characters are all standout, except maybe Bobby's friend, Mike, who feels really unimposing and uncharismatic to me.

James also feels odd. He looks the part, but his character seems a real pussy. He looks like he's going to cry when he's in the cell with Bobby and Mike baying. He kind of reminds me of a bigger, good looking version of Harry from Third Rock From the Sun.

Audrey and Shelley are stunningly gorgeous right from the get go.

Leo looks like a little wimp in the pilot, and juding by the pilot alone, I think Bobby would kick his arse.

Watching Cooper and Truman is fun. You see Truman and think 'he's a really cool dude', but then Cooper appears, and Cooper transcends cool and takes it stratospheric. He is totally in charge. Lynch suggests this when Cooper passes the message to Truman saying Bobby didn't do it, and when their enquiries lead to a biker, and Cooper freezes the video to show the reflection of a bike in Laura's eyes. He always knew that.

Love this one.

Cooper's character is simply one for the ages...

At the end of Fire Walk With Me when Cooper lays his hand on laura's shoulder to guide her to heaven and to let her know that she is NOT alone after she's been Murdered, I can not watch that scene without breaking down.
