I finished the box set the other night. Its weird what you forget and what you remember. I had watched it years ago or at least some episodes because some scenes I instantly remembered but I had forgotten the whole campy soap-opera vibe of the show.
I mostly enjoyed it but I'm kind of happy it got cancelled when it did. Season one ended on a great episode. Season two took its time to find its feet and I think the format of writing episodes with out a definite end in mind in the hope that it could continue indefinitely was starting to show. If it had been able to run and run it would have ended up a mess of unresolved plots and strange spooky events that made no sense.

Sorry I'm so far behind on this. Been doing some very worthwhile things with my time- family, reading great books (including Mark Frost's List of Seven), and some way dumb things too (Spartacus on Starz - guilty pleasure).

Episode 3: Rest In Pain

"Aw, look. It's trying to think."

Written by Harley Peyton.
Directed by Tina Rathborne.
Original Airdate: April 26, 1990.

The townsfolk of Twin Peaks gather for Laura Palmer's funeral; Cooper interprets his dream about the killer; Truman reveals to Cooper the secret of the Bookhouse Boys.

Some Dialogue:
-------------------------------
Dale Cooper: She whispered to me who killed her
Sheriff Truman: Well, what did she say?
Dale Cooper: You know... I don't remember.
-------------------------------
Albert: Mr. Horne, I realize that your position in this fair community pretty well guarantees venality, insincerity, and a rather irritating method of expressing yourself. Stupidity, however, is not necessarily a inherent trait, therefore, please listen closely. You can have a funeral any old time. You dig a hole, you plant a coffin. I, however, cannot perform these tests next year, next month, next week or tomorrow - I must perform them now. I've got a lot of cutting and pasting to do, gentlemen, so why don't you please return to your porch rockers and resume whittling.
-------------------------------
Sheriff Truman: There's a sort of evil out there. Something very, very strange in these old woods. Call it what you want. A darkness, a presence. It takes many forms but... its been out there for as long as anyone can remember and we've always been here to fight it.
-------------------------------
Sheriff Truman: I've had just about enough of you and your insults!
Albert Rosenfield: Oh yeah? Well, I've had about enough of this small town filled with morons and half wits, dolts, dunces, dullards and dumbbells... and you... you chowder-head yokel, you blithering hayseed. You've had enough of me?
Sheriff Truman: Yes, I have.
[Truman punches Albert in the face]

My thoughts on episode 3:

A big dropdown in brilliance compared to the previous episode, but it definitely has its moments: particularly any scene with Albert, and scenes with Leland, and Laura's funeral.

Well I read The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer. It was disconcerting and sad and weird.

It starts on her 12th birthday, with her talking like any 12 year old about her birthday, all fine and dandy. Then the last line of that day says something about hoping Bob doesn't visit her tonight....

Then there's many pages of girlish things, occasionally intruded on by dark imaginings and thoughts, with some sideways references to 'him'. Then it gets really a bit sinister where she and Donna go off to party with some older boys, but it remains essentially innocent.

THEN it starts getting really dark and uncomfortable.

Overall I'm glad I read it, but it makes you sad and kind of angry in the way that, say, Lolita does. A well-written book that really plugs into the Twin Peaks darkside, and has none of its humour.

Episode 4: The One-Armed Man

Written by Robert Engels.
Directed by Tim Hunter.
Original Airdate: May 3, 1990.

Cooper and Truman track down the one-armed man and some strange new evidence in Laura Palmer's murder; Norma Jennings attends a parole board hearing for her husband; Audrey Horne decides to begin her own investigation.

Some Dialogue:
-------------------------------
Sheriff Truman: Morning Lucy, what's going on?
Lucy Moran: Er... thanks to Jade, Jared decided not to kill himself, and he's changed his will leaving the Towers to Jade instead of Emerald, but Emerald found out about it, and now she's trying to seduce Chet to give her the new will so that she can destroy it; Montana's planning to kill Jared at midnight so the Towers will belong to Emerald and Montana, but I think she's going to double-cross him and he doesn't know it yet. Poor Chet.
Sheriff Truman: What's going on *here*?
-------------------------------
Deputy Tommy 'Hawk' Hill: [Looking at Cooper's Firing Range target sheet] Only four hits?
Dale Cooper: Well I got four through the eyes and two through each nostril.
Deputy Tommy 'Hawk' Hill: Nice pattern.

The first mundane episode I think. There is some interesting stuff like when the guys investigate the vets, and we also meet the one-armed man who tells his missing arm had a tattoo of Bob, and we also find Norma's husband is another Twin Peaks resident who is involved in the drug trade.

That's mostly been debunked. It was just some random poster writing B.S. about Lynch meeting with NBC, and somehow it spread like wildfire.

Man, I'd love that to be true. So sad to see his imdb page filled with all shorts since 2006. I don't think he's even doing the weather report anymore and the last news item on his website is from almost 2 years ago. So much crazy creative talent we could be tapping into.
