For any M*A*S*H fans out there, I came across this retrospective essay on the show on YouTube last night and it is really, really, very well done. Truly one of the best things of its type that I've ever watched on YouTube. Well worth your time. (I realize that this video isn't a tv show per se, but the content is about one of the most iconic tv shows of all time, so I thought it would be appropriate to post here.)

I rewatched both recently. Season 1 is just excellent. Visuals, dialogue, music, pacing, structure. Heavy on making you think about philosophical questions. Season 2 is still good but it feels like a different show. Less philosophy, more exposition, quite a bit of filler, and the story is harder to follow.

On the other hand, the best episode of the series is in S2.

Maybe wait to see if S3 is any good since it's starting in a couple months. S2 was good enough for me to rewatch, but if there's nothing better to look forward to then the end of S1 is a perfect place to stop for a satisfying end at the show's peak.

I'm liking this Crashing show on HBO with Pete Holmes, who I'd never heard of before this. It's low key, very dry, also very smart. A line of dialogue will often hit me like a koan or epigram. And he actually seems to believe in God, which is pretty damn shocking to run across in today's popular culture.

Started the Expanse a few weeks ago. Just felt like watching something Sci-Fi. Feel like it is fine almost through S1 but nothing special.

Any reason to keep going with it?

I could never make it out of season 1, but people keep raving about it. Maybe I will skip to season 2 and try.

Season 1 provides the setup for the whole story.

Or you could just read the books. I watched season 1 and got hooked mainly because the science was believable. Far less suspension disbelief is necessary than for Star Trek or BSG (and I'm a big fan of both).

After I watched season 1, I started reading the books and consider them in the top level of scifi epics.

I never know whether to put netflix docs in the TV or movie thread. I'm guessing everyone reads both.

Finished Inside Bill's Brain We thought this was fantastic. I would highly recommend.

Don't F**K with Cats This is EXTREMELY disturbing. My wife got through maybe 5 minutes before refusing to watch. My sister, who can watch pretty much anything, gave it up after about 1/2 hour. I finished it. I thought the documentary was very good. But the subject matter was definitely tough to stomach.

Finished The Madalorian. Lots of fun. Would recommend.

Way behind the curve here, but we started Silicon Valley. Absolutely hilarious.

We've also been watching Broken. Really good so far. Would recommend.

I stumbled by accident onto this TBS sitcom Miracle Workers: Dark Ages, it's very good! Smart, funny, has the great Steve Buscemi and even that Harry Potter kid who are both excellent. I can't quite believe it, right there on basic cable where anybody and his dog can watch for free. I looked up this creator guy, Simon Rich is his name, apparently Frank Rich's son who wrote for SNL really young and is cranking out comedy product now. I'll keep an eye on him.

Any fellow political junkies here? I have really been enjoying The Circus on Showtime. They basically follow the candidates around as they scramble for votes. This past week's episode about the Iowa caucus cluster**** was especially good. Really entertaining and gives a whole different perspective.

Also: Alex Wagner. She's my dream woman. Smart, funny, and ridiculously beautiful.

Since the goddamn world seems falling apart, I've decided to renew my dormant Netflix subscription and rewatch Mad Men all the way thru for the 3rd or 4th time. It's a really good show about America back in the 60s, back when I was just getting started. And maybe I'm supposed to hate Don Draper for his alcohol abuse, his shabby treatment of women, and his general toxic masculinity, but God help me I still like his style.

ZeroZeroZero is VeryVeryVery good. It's on Amazon...a limited series based on the best-seller about the the drug business between the Italian Cosa Nostra, the Mexican drug gangs of Monterrey, and the American brokers in-between them.

It has as its writers/directors some of the people from True Detective, Sicario 2, and Gomorrah.

Pretty damn spectacular, with Andrea Risborough and Gabriel Byrne. Darkly beautiful, and very violent.

My Mad Men rewatch completely fizzled out, been there done that. My entertainment-saturated mind demands new amusements, that's the word from the front.

So now I'm watching this Israeli show on Amazon from a few years back, it's called Sgurim. Lots of Jewish ladies dating around, looking for a few good Jewish men for husband duty etc. Very interesting! Whole other way of life over there, and it's subtitled ugh; they're speaking a different language which I guess is Hebrew, honestly it's a fairly ugly-sounding language to me but you probably get used to it. I'm a little sweet on this Yafit girl, she's probably a little young for me, thirty-something or so but I'm game if she is. I do love a dusky woman, God help me. I might convert for her!

lol I just noticed it's Srugim not Sgurim. Not sure if I should shrug or squirm now, maybe both.

Not a fan of the sound of Hebrew either, too guttural

Been doing a ton of binge watching in the past few weeks. I decided to hit up my list on Amazon since my Netflix default has been disappointing lately with a lot of 15 minutes and out types of series there.

I took a couple of weeks to blow through all 77 episodes of Eureka which I think was a SYFY channel series that ran from 2006 to 2012. Lighthearted, stupid fun that eventually gets very repetitive but once it was over I kinda missed it.

Then I hit up The Boys about a world with a large superhero population where the superheros actually become the bad guys. Only 8 episodes but I loved it.

Right now about half way through The Last Tycoon which is about 1930's Hollywood and entertaining enough to keep me watching.

Patiently awaiting the third season of Killing Eve in a couple weeks...

Otherwise it's been a steady diet of Star Trek: Next Generation, Get Smart and Bullwinkle re-runs.

Started watching Bosch on Amazon Prime and liking it pretty well. Pretty much a by the numbers cop show with all of the usual clichés. The lead cop who plays by his own rules, the captain who hates him, squared away partner, estranged family, likeable side characters etc.

But even though it breaks no new ground it seems to be very well done with good performances and set pieces. I always liked Welliver and carries this show effortlessly. Just finished first season and will keep going as there isn't much else to do nowadays

Yeh I enjoyed it, but was one of those shows I stopped for a bit around S2, now don't ever feel like picking it up again.

I just let an article on slate.com about the all-time best Simpsons episodes convince me to sign up for a free trial week of Disney+, l kinda doubt I ever watch any but I sleep easier knowing I could if I want to! And that'll probably be true til late April cause I never remember to cancel those goddamn free trials on time. I'm looking at you, HBO.

Oh yeah, and the piece called it the GOAT sitcom which of course is blatantly false, I'd say easily top 5 but 1 is all Seinfeld, baby.

I just watched what this Slate piece said was the key transitional Simpsons episode, s2e12 The Way We Was, about how Marge and Homer met and fell in love. It was very good but for me doesn't really approach the brilliance of some of the later episodes. I think next I'll seek out the one where Albert Brooks is some crazy rich Bond Villain type that I always remember as one of my favs. Probably just work my way down some reputable best episodes list, bound to be a few out there. Only 6 free days left!

I would agree with The Simpsons being the GOAT sitcom, if we are just rating them at their peak. I would rank Seinfeld 2nd, but I'd put it 1st if we are ranking consistency over the entire show's run. And I think both shows are well ahead of anything else.

And yeah, that Frank Scorpio episode is an all-timer for sure. But I always remember some of my fave episodes revolving around Mr Burns - like the one where where he owns the casino, or the one where Homer and Burns get trapped in the cabin. You can't really go wrong with any episode around that time period tho.

Hmm, you may have just talked me into doing a rewatch, haha.
