I also liked Broadchurch, but it wasn't half as good/strange/American as True Detective. It was standard BBC emo ****, a little precious.

mrbaseball, I watched all of Broadchurch and half of Gracepoint, and Broadchurch is way better imo.

Lol, can't argue with this. There's definitely nothing American about Broadchurch. I didn't see anything "emo" about Broadchurch other than a couple of scenes in the last episode that were a little bleh. But much much more satisfying ending than True Detective's first-year philosophizing BS. Now THAT was precious.

I haven't watched Gracepoint so I don't know how they compare at all.

Well I wouldn't defend the philosophizing, but I would defend the uniquely strange milieu and the characters played by Woody and MM. Broadchurch was just a bunch of boring English sods pissing and moaning.

You've just insulted the greatest Dr. Who in the history of the Who-verse. Blasphemoooous!

Season two of The Musketeers started the BBC on Friday. So YAY!
Really hit a high at the end of the first season, but it's hard to tell how well the second season will fair based on one episode.
It's a shame Peter Capaldi landed the role of Doc Who, as Cardinal Richelieu was my kind of scheming bad guy. That said though, the Comte de Rochfort Looks like he could more than aptly fill the Cardinal's boots.

Also on the BBC lately was the second series Atlantis, but that disappeared after 6 episodes just before Christmas. Don't know when they're going to show the rest of the series, but I hope the hurry up!

Anyone here got thoughts on Penny Dreadful?
I enjoyed parts of it immensely, in particular the Frankenstein arcs/scenes, and Sir Malcolm. Ethan started weak and got stronger and stronger. Vanessa, whilst I thought Eva Green's performance was very strong, was a character I just couldn't like, but I appreciated. Dorian Gray plotlines/scenes were abysmal. Overall, it was strong, and I will be watching season 2.

I think I watched about the first 10 minutes of the first episode when I decided it was something I would have no interest in.

On a scale of 1-10 how gory is Penny Dreadful (movie gore comparisons would be great)?

Watched the first 2 or 3 eps, but the rest got backlogged on the dvr and eventually erased. Felt like too much of a mashup of a bunch of disparate spooky stories.

The writers of Lost just admitted they were making it up as they went along.

That show went off the air just long enough ago that it probably didn't have any true HD film transfers done (I think that became a common thing in maybe 2005 or 2006, and I think the show went off the air in 2005). Pre HD era, nearly everything was transferred to a tape format called D1. It's really high quality, but not considered HD. All normal home video transfers used to be done to that (because of that is what so many VHS movies didn't look awful). Six Feet Under likely would have been done that way. However, because it's so old, they would likely have to do all new film transfers to HD. That's not cheap, and if they're not going to make money back from it, they won't do it. Movies and TV being re-transferred to HD (if they never had an HD transfer done restoration might even be necessary which is a lot more expensive) is the only reason they can even remotely justify the often triple dip.

I'm watching the Looking HBO show, it's very gay. I think it's a good show, but be advised it's very very gay. I've finished 6 of the 8 season 1 episodes now.

I started watching The Affair after all the hoopla about it at the Golden Globes. I've only seen the first episode, but I'm liking the actors, the cinematography is grand, and I enjoy the setup. Thumbs up so far.

I liked The Affair a lot although it drags a little in the middle.

I thought the Affair was okay. Kinda unique the way they tell the story although the perspectives are often so different it's tilting. The actors are good but it annoyed me by the end with lack of resolution

A lot of the big HBO shows are now out on blu-ray or like The Wire will be in the summer. Maybe it will come out some day.

I don't know if you have ever used VUDU but they have Six Feet Under seasons 1-2 (in sd only) seasons 3-5 (has HDX option which is 1080p)
