There are some hidden gems on Netflix:

Million Yen Women

Five mysterious women show up at the apartment of a struggling novelist, each offering to pay a million yen cash in rent under the condition that he not ask them any questions. Who are they? Who sent them? How does a struggling novelist have an apartment that accommodates five people? It's goofy, surreal, mysterious, and quintessentially Japanese.

Norsemen

Awkward, dry Norwegian humor at its best. Think Game of Thrones meets The Office, with gorgeous Scandinavian scenery. I'm only two episodes in, but this has me rolling.

Caught the pilot episode of The Deuce, the new David Simon series on HBO. It's on HBO Go although it doesn't start airing on HBO until the 17th.

I was underwhelmed, but that may be due to my dislike for James Franco (and he plays 2 roles in this). Has some excellent dialogue but none of the characters really resonated with me. Gonna give it a few more episodes though. So far I find the pimps to be the most interesting.

I will say they've captured the grime and seediness of pre-Giuliani Times Square perfectly.

American Horror Story: Murder House I've heard good things about this series and am a fan of horror and suspense so I watched the first season of it on Netflix. It's basically a soap opera, but with ghosts and murder. Meh.

Watched the first two episodes of Season 4 Bojack Horseman.

S4 E1 was... sigh, just not good. It felt too fast and choppy. One can only take so much Mr Peanutbutter.

S4 E2 was really something and unique. I really enjoyed it, but I felt exhausted after watching it. It feels like this season is going to go much darker than season 3.

Making a Murderer What a crazy story and riveting drama. It was like watching the People vs OJ Simpson series, but not knowing how it ends (I didn't look up what happened until I finished watching it).

Loving this, thanks! Basically Vikings but funny.

September TV Preview (with premiere dates)

A little late with this, but maybe you want to know what dates your favorites shows are premiering.

Bojack Season 4 isn't getting a lot of love from me. It's more episodic and doesn't feel like it is going anywhere. I watched until ep 8 so far, and there is no resolution. Some of the episodes have been basically unbearable to watch.

My buddy made a valid point. Bojack ruined every relationship in the last season, and the writers put themselves into a corner. Mr Peanutbutter and Todd are too one-dimensional to carry a story by themselves. Bojack and Diane are great, but they are playing second fiddle now.

American Vandal is A+, starts off as a juvenile satire involving ball hairs and handjobs and turns into an Agatha Christie-style whodunnit. Great if you love mysteries and dick jokes.

Just saw this while clicking around on rotten tomatoes for a new show to watch. Sounds like good fun, so will definitely check it out.

The Deuce is just so uninteresting. Seems they blew their wad on the production design and forgot to have things like interesting characters and an engaging narrative.

I only watched American Vandal because of all the good reviews. It looked like it would be just a bunch of dick jokes that would get old really fast. I wasn't really wrong about that and was just about ready to give up on it, but I will admit that about 1/2 way through I got suckered into the mystery of it. Not a great show by any means, but I don't regret watching it.

Does anybody watch Animal Kingdom? Never really see it get mentioned, but it's great entertainment imo. The first 2 seasons are on Netflix.

I enjoy it, but it's gotten quite a bit over the top. It's basically Sons of Anarchy with surfers

Yeah, it's definitely over the top at times. But then again, so was Breaking Bad (not that I'm comparing the two).

It's not going to win any awards, but if you're just after something fun to binge, it's well worth a watch.

Finished The Vietnam War tonight.

This should be required viewing in schools...and Congress!

Absolutely devastating. And remarkable.

Thrashed Hiroo Onoda's record though.
Quote:
Imperial Japanese Army intelligence officer who fought in World War II and was a Japanese holdout who did not surrender in 1945. After Onoda spent 29 years holding out in the Philippines, his former commander traveled from Japan to personally issue orders relieving him from duty in 1974.

+1

I liked American Vandal and kept thinking how much work it must have been to create this story both in the writing and the set designs, props, etc
