Canadian Bacon should at least get an honorable mention.

Cool Runnings and Blues Brothers though!

I find it hard to believe they haven't received more love.

These 3 easily are the top but to order them is impossible, depending on the day it would change...
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
The Great Outdoors
Uncle Buck

He has so many good movies though:
Summer Rental
Stripes
Brewsters Millions
Spaceballs
Armed & Dangerous
Splash
Vacation
Nothing But Trouble
Who's Harry Crumb? (you find that crazy typewriter and youll find your kidnapper)

...great now I want a John Candy Marathon

1) Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
2) Uncle Buck

Beyond that, there is a huge drop. If the criteria is "Favorite Movies John Candy Appeared In," then

3) Rookie of the Year

Of course, that's not really a "John Candy movie."

It's been a long time since I saw The Great Outdoors, but I'm guessing that would be my third pick otherwise.

John Candy doesn't get enough credit for his dramatic ability. He has some great moments in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

Watched 'Splash' today and he had a pretty good rant at Tom Hanks about love not being an every day occurance.

The scene in 'Brewsters Millions' where he tells Richard Pryor he hadn't spent all the money Brewster paid him implying he would carry the load for a while had me thinking 'awww, there's a true friend right there'.

I've actually been referred by my married with children friends as Uncle Buck, being that I'm somewhat overweight and make my living playing poker, but I'm basically good hearted and always there in the clutch, so I guess I sympathize the most with that character.

He was great as the coach in 'Cool Runnings' and again got to give a rant against the Olympic committee. 'Punish me not my team'.

Personally, I loved 'Wagons East' though it seems I'm in the minority. It's very silly, and Candy actually looks unwell in the film, but he delivers a lot of laughs as the Wagonmaster.

'Summer Rental' is probably my favorite Candy movie where he was the actual star. I love the scene where he and Captain Scully (Rip Torn) get ****faced.

My favorites with him as the star
1. Summer Rental
2. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
3. Uncle Buck

My favorites with him as a support
1. Stripes
2. Splash
3. Brewster's Millions

So what about The Blues Brothers??!
this is definitely another solid movie.

i think the only reason its not being brought up more is that when we think of blues brothers we think of belushi and ackroyd first and foremost. so the thread is more john candy movies rather than 'movies with john candy in them'

Lol I hope not!

Finally saw Canadian Bacon last night. A decent enough flick, made me laugh, but I certainly wouldn't have it in my top 5. Thought it would have been better without the politics tbh.

Weirdly re-watched this on free to air again and I have to retract my politics comment. I think the message was a bit clearer the second time.

His role as the beer truck driver in Masters of Menace was pretty good. I loved that movie as a kid, but would probably think that it sucks if I watched it today. Summer Rental was probably his best

Haha yeah MoM doesn't really stand the test of time.

Thanks for the tip about Summer Rental, I actually hadn't heard of it before. I'll go watch it and report back.

Any bump of this thread the day after Thanksgiving needs to gratuitously mention again Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, by far his best movie.

Support wise & not even comedy, I actually thought he was great in JFK. "you're as crazy as your momma! Goes to show it's in the genes!"

I'd trade Seth Rogen's entire remaining career for just 1 more John Candy film.

I agree, ARC. Candy was truly a comic genius. And his good-spirited nature would always shine thru.
