Between tours on Saturday afternoons, I used to keep pizza in the hop cooler at the Brooklyn Brewery. One day I thought the pepperoni smelled really good with the intense hop aroma in there, so i took a few Cascades pellets and crumbled them up over a slice or two.

They went really well together. Try it yourselves sometime.

Philly Voted 16th best beer city in the world Woooot!!

All but one of the bars listed in the article are within 5 blocks of my house, and the one that isnt 5 blocks away is about 15 blocks. So yea its a pretty good place to live.

Im suprised though that they didnt make note of the fact that Philadelphia Brew Company and Yards brewery are within a few blocks of all these bars.

RDH, I mentioned to you a few months back about my first brew process, did an all grain recipe, a triple, for some reason. Well its ready and I had a few last night, not bad, I'll post a review in the coming days with photos.

Actually 13th, the whole list is only 14 cities. The list doesn't look great to me though :-/

So far so good on my beer. I figure to bottle Monday or Tuesday. I'm too drunk to post pics now, though.

Northern Libs imo.

I'm not a Phila Brew Co fan. Newbold is ok but I don't care much for the Rowhouse Red or Kenzinger.

A bar in town has recently offered two draft beers by a brewer named Milliken that were $10 & $11 per pint respectively. I tried both out of curiosity and they were outstanding.

Tried the Magic Hat Blind Faith IPA this weekend.

It is around 6% abv and NOT a hop bomb.

I prefer my IPAs on the hoppier side... not a bad brew but, prolly won't buy again.

It was light and you could definately drink a lot of these in a session.

I just received a few of these in a trade and had my first one the other night. Didnt like it at all. Now, I much prefer American IPAs to the English variety, but I think Goose Island and Brooklyn both have very tasty EIPAs. Blind Faith didnt do it for me at all. Sorry I still have 3 left.

This weekend I added a collar to my chest freezer. Since coolant lines for freezers wrap around the body, its really dangerous to drill through the side of one. A way to work around this is to add a wooden collar to the freezer, so that you can drill in more taps, a pass-through for a CO2 line, attach a CO2 manifold to it, whatever. Here's a couple before and after pics of the beast.

I made a chest freezer kegerator about 6 months ago. I've never seen a design like yours. Can you explain how you modified the lid? I just added a collar to mine.

The lid just has a nice slab of oak on it, stained and poly'd. Its attached with some heavy-duty double-sided tape. No idea why I didn't just glue it down with liquid nails, in retrospect.

A lot more info on the collar build here.

Wipeout is awesome... Tricerahops ranks right with it, if not slightly better- drank this on the 4th and I wish I had more.

This weekend tried:

Three Floyds Dreadnaught

I've wanted to try this forever but just realized I only had to drive to Hudson, WI (25 minutes) to get it. Lived up to the hype. 5/5, world class dipa.

Bell's Expedition Stout

Solid Imperial Stout. 4.5/5

Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout

Solid Russian Imperial Stout. 4.5/5

I also had some Alpha King. It is probably my favorite non-imperial pale ale after Furious. 5/5

Per ounce of beer this was a very expensive weekend.
Per ounce of alcohol it was a moderately expensive weekend.
Per health of liver it was probably extremely expensive.

What makes an IPA a double IPA? An IBU above a certain amount?

Double the malt, double the hops, double the alcohol. Give or take, anyway.

BEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

OK, some pics from my very first brew:

Getting set up

Aaaaaand, brew!

Sterilize things:

Add hops:

Drain hops and barley (arms belong to my friend, a veteran brewer who helped K and me along):

All Done!

Now we wait. My friend took care of the secondary ferment on his own, so I don't have pics of that. My next pics are of bottling.

Finished beer:

Cleaning bottles (my friend again)

Measure alcohol:

(should be 4-5%)

Drain into new bucket to get rid of yeast cake:

Bottling!

Our first tasting will probably be a week from now.
