Happy Oberon release date TLDR beer thread

I'm planning on starting to post here more reviewing a lot of the Michigan Microbrews that I drink.

Took a trip to Three Floyds this past weekend. Came away with a sixer of Alpha King(APA), 3 Dreadnaught(IIPA), 1 Behemoth(Barleywine), 1 Brian Boru(Irish Red), and 1 Lord Admiral Nelson(ESB).

Dreadnaught is the best beer Ive ever had outside of Hopslam.

I just had the 60min for the first time a couple days ago. I liked it quite a bit.

I've seen HARP in the store, I'll give it a try.

Whenever I visit family in southland chicago area I make a quick jaunt over 3Floyds... great stuff. I too am a fan of Dreadnaught... it's a slick double, that goes down too easy! One of the best. I think AK is one of the top 5 or so flagship APA's of any microbrew I've been to, and I've been to a ton.

Your post is fine, so is the kit from what I can tell. Did you also get one of those ingredient kits they list on that site. How big is the pot you're going to use?

I was going to go with a 20 QT pot....Is that no good?

I recently tried this beer, too, and I enjoyed it, even though I didn't review it. It's definitely around a 3 beer.

20Qt is ok, especially if you already have one around or can get one cheap. As much as I personally love brewing, I know not everyone will, so generally I advise people not to sink too much money into equipment before they know they'll stick with it, and a big pot is definitely the most money you'll spend as a newbie. So to start, a 20qt pot is fine. You'll be able to make good beer, boiling maybe 3g of wort and, when done, topping it off with another ~2.5g of water to get your full 5-5.5g of wort for fermenting. Doing that a couple times will let you know if you're likely to brew a bit more or aren't really that interested.

Thanks for the info, yea I didnt want to dump too much loot into it until I figured out if I enjoyed it or not. I expect my first few bathes wont be great. Ive been looking for a good step by step guide online, found a few but if you could recommend one that would be great.

I think I've posted at least one brew day TR-type post in this thread, if not then I was the OP so it shouldn't be too hard to search.

The best reference hands-down is John Palmer's How To Brew. He's got one version available free online, but every brewer I know, home or pro, has a hard copy at home. The print version has more info. Anywho, one of the chapters is basically a step-by-step for those just wanting to get their first batch done without getting bogged down in details or science.

Sierra Nevada's XXX, their anniversary impy stout, just hit Nashville and I picked up a bottle yesterday. I'll be cracking it tomorrow afternoon, but has anybody else had a chance to try it out?

EDIT: $10 for a caged, corked 750, if the beer is decent at all it seems like great value.

Sure did, we had a bottle last Saturday.
Overall it was...very decent. I guess this was one of those cases where I read perhaps too much hype before opening it. It was a bit plain.
Inky black beer, taste of dark, roasty malts like you would expect. Very drinkable and smooth, I would be interested to see what some age does to it.
I dont want to seem too negative though, we enjoyed the beer, it was a very good stout, just maybe not a great one imho.

what I love about this beer is the story - basically, there is NO Tremont Brewery. last summer, some guy sold a ****-load of beer to a grocery chain in the southeast and when they said "yes" he had the Shipyard Brewery make it all for him. I guess he's doing it again.

Either way, it's a good beer and fine value at about $6 a sixer.

If this is close to Shipyard's XXXX IPA then it is going to be better than most that you will buy at $6 or less.

Yeah, I agree, pretty good beer. It got better as it warmed, too. Chocolatey, light touch with the roast, noticeable hop character. Mine was $10 for the 750, so I'm thinking about picking up another to stash away for a year or so.

I have another. It won't last a year or so...be lucky if it gets through the week.

I don't know how you can have the will power to leave good beer sitting there in your house. Too many opportunities to enjoy it.

My girlfriend ridicules me for this. I have about 25 different beers in medium to longer term storage plus what I have for immediate consumption. We were on our way home from the beach Sunday and I told her that we had to stop at the liquor store for beer. She looked at me increduously and said that I had a ton of beer already.

What's better, Stone Ruination IPA or just Stone IPA?
