My first review, i have just started getting into craft beer/micro breweries, belgium, scottish, english beers etc. though i have decided for my first review i will do something domestic

Picked it up at my local beer distributor, was refrigerated when purchased, $3.50 for a 22 ounce bomber.

Long Trail - Imperial Porter, 8.3 ABV (Brewed in Vermont, US)

Look: Pours a deep black motor oil color that i was expecting, minimal light getting through this pint glass. Tanish head that was very lacy and seemed like it was permanently stuck to the glass

Smell: Toffee, chocolate, burnt malts, prunes, molasses, as the beer got closer to room temp it started opening up excellently

Taste: Dark chocolate, strong coffee notes, nutty and toasty, with a pinch of hops to level it out

Mouth Feel: Very malty, very smooth with all the elements of the beer coming out as soon we you take your first sip, not to bold or too mild, you have a hard time believing this beer comes in at 8.3 ABV, extremely drinkable but i would not recommend more then a couple... Final rating B+

I hope my first review was good, ill be doing more shortly as i have lots of new beers ive discovered id like to talk about! My next review will be one of my favorite scottish ale / wee heavys by the name of SkullSplitter :-D

^^^

Both are tasty IMO. I've actually been on a Pilsner kick lately, and I think there's a few more Pilsner Urquell's in my fridge. Think I'm going to have to grab one really quick!

Review:

St. Peter's Organic English Ale

Comes in a really sweet clear, flask shaped medicinal looking glass bottle (will be saving this) and is a nice dark orange/caramel color. Pours with virtually no head into my New Belgium glass. Perhaps I poured it too carefully?

At first smell I thought I was drinking a very mild tripel. Smells a lot like that type of beer. I smell yeast, light malted barley (thanks to the back of the bottle, makes sense though), smells sweet, and fresh.

Taste is very straightforward, almost blandish, but very good. Kind of like a lower alcohol tripel that doesn't have as much citrus/yeast. I can taste a hint of the alcohol, and it leaves a pungent, sourish aftertaste, not digging it, but it's not much of an affect.

Mouthfeel is that of slight carbonation, and smoothness.

I definitely think this is a legit session ale. I paid $3.69 for a 16.9oz bottle, and would probably pick it up again, it's fun to drink, and I feel like Darwin pouring out of this medicinal looking bottle.

.5 / 5 (B+)

These are my selections for tonight:

I'm gonna start with the Sam Smith's brown.

It's the perfect kind of crisp NYC night for it.

Then I'll have a few Hop Head Red's.. a decent session red, only 6% abv and another good choice for the time o year.

Cheers guys!

I dunno if it was just a bad batch or what, but the sixer I got had a TON of sediment left in the bottle. It still tasted fine and didn't really bother me...just seemed strange for a commercial offering. Was a pretty tasty beer IIRC.

I think the Dark Lord was $10 when I bought it at the brewery.

It sounds like it has aged well, I bought that bottle in April 2008 Wookie, the hops were more dominant initially but it sounds like they haven't faded too much, it was never hop dominant. I still have a few more left

These had some too but, fairly standard from this brewery in my experience.

I love the west coast IPA they put out and I buy it quite frequently, I find it commonly has some sediment floaties.

I wouldn't say a TON though... if you like hops, these two brews are for you.

Good stuff.

Well the first was the only bad one because I started pouring them like I would a homebrew, but it was ridiculous! It appeared to be mostly leftover hop particles from dry-hopping...but I could be wrong.

It's extremely hard to find, and I graciously had a bottle shipped to me by Chicago Ry..........

.....The aroma is mostly hazelnut and coffee with a hint of vanilla. The flavor is very toasty. The taste of very darkly toasted bread is much more prominent in this beer than in most imperial stouts I've had. It has a decent floral hop character to it, too. It doesn't taste as dry and strongly hopped as, say, Victory's Storm King, but in a beer this heavy, much heavier and thicker than the aforementioned Storm King, it's hard for hops to dominate. As the beer warms up, I get a little more chocolate and fig along with a mild dark cherry flavor in the sweetness. Thankfully, that cherry is not of cough syrup. It's hard to objectively say that this was the best imperial stout I've ever had. I briefly considered using this at my double-blind imperial stout taste test, but then I was like, **** that, I'm drinking this myself. Anyway, this is an excellent, excellent beer. Easy .
This sounds delicious. I hope I may have the opportunity to have this someday.

Same with Brewdog's new Tactical Nuclear Penguin....

Yes sir...their winter welcome has made it's seasonal appearance.

Speaking of Russian styles with Dark in the title here is a pretty decent Russian Style Stout I'm sure a lot of you are aware of, but it is becoming harder an harder to find. The last time I saw it in a store was about a month ago. They had the poster as well but the girl behind the counter said they were going to hang it in the store

I would suggest google, or going to your local beer distributor and having him order some for you. You may also go to www.beeradvocate.com and search for the beer you would like, on the right-hand side there might be an option that says locate! beer. click it, and try to track it down!

In honor of the end of Prohibition, I'm drinking a Brew Free or Die IPA from the 21st Amendment Brewery. This also came to me by way of Ry. 7% ABV, it's in a can!

Pours just slightly cloudy with a very nice head.

Classic IPA aroma. Hops, malt. I can't say this is the most exciting IPA I've ever had, but it's solid. It does seem a little maltier than some IPAs, certainly, but the hops aren't as rich as in, say, Lagunitas' version. I'd never turn down one of these if offered, though. .

In celebration of the end of Prohibition, I'm drinking a six pack of Modus Hoperandi by Ska Brewery.

Ok, ok, I was drinking that before MrWookie reminded me that it was that day.....

To make up for it, I am drinking moar!!

I did purchase this in early September in the Bay area, so that could be the issue with the hops.

Goose Island brewery tour review with pics tomorrow!

Agreed - it's great and practically the reference standard.

not a review - but everyone should try the Anchor Christmas ale- I think they change it up every year - very good this year - nice maple syrup flavor finish. One of the best dark beers I've had in a while.

They change it every year? I hope so. I reviewed it years back in this thread and I thought it was awful.

Minneapolis and the surrounding area is expecting 1-6" of snow today/night. It's snowing pretty damn good right now. This calls for a trip to the liquor store and a 4-pack of Old Rasputin just to assure being snowed in will be tolerable. Nothing like a good Russian Imperial on a cold, snowy night. Review to follow.

Here's a question for you beer boys...what beer is best that can be found at most convenience stores in your area? So I guess the best, most widely available beer?
