Tried Trois Pistoles from Unibroue last night on your suggestion Wookie. Loved it.

I've found that Golden Monkey is alright, but it doesn't really stand up against other top tripels.

Really good beer, I like the LFDM, Trois Pistoles, and the Maudite from Unibroue.

Has anyone had Koningshoeven Tripel or Dubbel? Just picked them up and looking forward to trying it soon.

I searched and did not find the double arrogant bastard. didn't seem to be mentioned in this thread. I love that beer and would imagine it to be another great example of a high alcohol beer that doesn't taste too much like alcohol. if someone reviewed the double in this thread, i'd love the link.

not to speak for the other dude, but malt liquors, like Elephant and barley wines often taste a little too much like alcohol. otoh, i actually like that sometimes.

Has anyone tried this? Triple Karmeliet.

By reading the reviews, it seems worthy of my $8.40.

I reviewed it a long time back.

It was definitely a good beer in which the alcohol didn't dominate, but given it's price, I'd rather have two of the single Bastards or one of the oak aged bastards instead of one of the doubles.

Re: TLDR Beer Club

Abs,

I've been meaning to try that one. My beer goblet is the official Tripel Karmeliet goblet, and yet I've never tried its corresponding beer. Let me know what you think.

I tried the Allagash Tripel last night. For me, it was definetly on par with LFDM. I have a bottle of the Allagash White waiting for me in the fridge.

You had that before? It's cool to try, but not my favorite way to spend $10 on a single bottle of beer.

Re: TLDR Beer Club

Yeah, I'm a hop maniac.

I also bought a sixer of Lagunitas Brown Shugga and a sixer of Green Flash's West Coast IPA.. (I love the hop taste in that one)

I got the 120's for $8.49 each.

Re: TLDR Beer Club

Nice price on the 120s. Still, I think you'll be disappointed by the level of hoppiness. I didn't find this nearly as potent as I expected. I thought the 90 had more kick.

Agreed, I think of the 120 more as a novelty-hey-try-this kind of beer and the 90min as an IPA you can drink any time.

Re: TLDR Beer Club

I feel like today I picked out an all-star lineup of beers I've never tried before.

I got Westmalle, Rochefort 8, St. Bernardus Abt. 12, and a big bottle of Caracole Saxo (which I've had before and enjoyed). TR's to follow!

Some very good choices IMO.
A local bar has the Abt 12 on draft right now and we have really enjoyed it the past 2 weekends.

Anyone try Hopslam? It's like $12 or $14 for a 6 pack at my liquor store. Great choice with the Brown Shugga, I love Lagunitas' beers.

Re: TLDR Beer Club

Today at work someone brought in some of Bell's Cherry Stout. Two of us thought the cherry flavor was really dominant, and two of us thought it was a background taste. Really divergent split for such a distinctive flavor. I'd love to hear from some of you that have tried it.

Re: TLDR Beer Club

I had the Cherry Stout and thought it was very cherry forward, that was quickly muted by the malty, chocolaty flavors of the Stout. However, there was always some residual sour cherry flavor.

I kinda liked it, but could only drink a few at a time, def not a session beer, more for sitting by the fire in a cozy cabin on a cold winter night.

Re: TLDR Beer Club

Well, I'm down south of the Mason-Dixon, so it seems like a good time to try some beer I can't otherwise get. Tonight I tried two brews from Swee****er, an Atlanta microbrewery that seems to be present in even tiny GA dive bars, but doesn't seem to make it up to my neck of the woods at all.

With dinner, I tried the Swee****er Sweet Georgia Brown, a brown ale, as you might guess. No idea the ABV or going rate for a sixer, but I was drinking pints for $3 out of a plastic cup at a total dive near the hotel I'm staying at. It's a fairly earthy brown ale with a decent sweetness to it. I like the flavor, but the texture wasn't great. The carbonation felt more like soda water than beer. I give it .

I also picked up a sixer of the Swee****er Hummer white ale on my way back to my room, one of which I'm enjoying now. While allegedly a Belgian white brewed with the usual orange and coriander, it tastes much more like a Bavarian hefe, not that that's really a bad thing. It's a hair too sweet, very spicy, but not as tart and wheaty as some whites. It's got a smoother maltiness like a hefe, along with some banana and clove flavor, driving the comparison home. It's a good and a half beer.

One beer I also tried recently but forgot to review was the Roosterfish hefeweizen. Roosterfish is a NY brewery that seems to be fairly new on the scene. I expect them to do well, though. Their hefeweizen is now the reigning champion for best American imitation of a German-style hefeweizen that I've had. Very good. and a half

Edit: LOL at the "t-wat" of Sweet-water" getting censored.

Haha...as I was reading, I kept seeing, "So next, I tried the Sweetsh*tter Brown"...thinking, that is the worst ****ing name for a beer ever.

Until I saw your LOL and realized I was an idiot who is bad at Wheel of Fortune.

Re: TLDR Beer Club

I finally tried Bell's Hopslam last night at my local bar. Holy **** this stuff is amazing. For anyone that has tried Surly Brewer's Bitter, it's about the only other beer I can compare it too. Victory Hopdevil is close, but it's not as high in alcohol. Hopslam is a heft 10.00, and it's hoppy as hell.

At $14/6 pack at my local liquor store, I don't think I'll be buying any, but it's def a great strong hop bomb of a beer.

Overall: 5, with ease.
