Re: TLDR Beer Club

Repitching slurry is definitely an approximation, but you can get really close using the Jamils Rate pitching calculator.

Click the repitching from slurry tab, type in your beer info at the top, OG, volume, and the date that you harvested the slurry and it will tell you how much slurry in ml you need. Leave the 2 sliders at the bottom at the defaults, unless you can eye ball the yeast to sediment concentration, I cant.

There is a bit of a movement against Jamil's viability calculators. There are some other folks who have data to back up that viability stands u significantly longer than Jamil claims on this calculator.

Interesting you say this. Only played around with the mrmalty calculator a lil bit but it always seemed a little aggressive in that regard, just based on intuition, so I always just assumed my intuition was wrong!

Re: TLDR Beer Club

Yea i always kind of assumed to, it seemed strange to me that the viability of a slurry after 8 weeks could be as low as 10%. But I just took it at face value since Im no microbiologist and those guys know more than me. But bc of that I have probably been over pitching alot of beers in the past.

I was thinking about it (have never been), but I would be flying solo, which probably would suck. Doesn't it sell out super quick though?

Anybody going to Cigar City's Hunahpu Day? I'll be there early in the morning. If anybody is going and wants to meet up, let me know, I met Wraths there last year and we swapped a few homebrews.

Wish I could make it, moved up to TN recently and don't see myself being able to get there this year. I'll let you know if that changes.

Re: TLDR Beer Club

Hunahpu's Day tap list came out today:

http://cigarcitybrewing.com/index.ph...d=47&Itemid=37

Some hightlights:

Three Floyds 2011 Bourbon Barrel-aged Vanilla Dark Lord Imperial Stout
Funky Buddha Last Snow Porter
Gravity Brewlab Caligula Blushed (wild ale openly fermented in a clay vessel)
J. Wakefield Brewing DFPF Floridaweisse

The lines for those will probably be insane though, particularly the Dark Lord.

Re: TLDR Beer Club

This TR from Brux is taking forever, I may crash this thread with the # of photos.

Brewed a Barleywine last night, 1.106!!! Massive beer! And was able to run off an extra 5 gallons of 1.036 runnings for a mild, saved it to boil tonight.

Re: TLDR Beer Club

While we're waiting for Coff's Belgium TR I thought I'd give a mini-TR about Hunahpu Day at Cigar City in Tampa. Gsupoker and I went with some others for the day. We got in line around 6:15 AM (gates were supposed to open at 7:50. The first 4000 people were guaranteed 3 bottles, next 1000 were guaranteed 2) and were about ~1000 people back in line. We had gone last year and got there at about 8:30 and were ~500 back in line, so this event has gotten more popular.

The line was probably ~2000 people long and winding into the Home Depot by 7:00 and Home Depot was not happy. They called the cops and Cigar City was forced to let everyone in around 7:15.

We got in and parked in a spot with our chair and coolers (outside beer was allowed). They sell tokens for $5 which you could trade for a beer (8 or 12 oz depending on the beer). One of our group bought tokens and gsupoker and I got in line at one of the 5 pouring stations which opened at 8:30. This was good for us because this line quickly became ~2 hours long to get from the back to the front. We got our first pours and sat down for the next few hours while everything reached a critical mass of ~7000 people. At noon they let people buy bottles after which a lot of people left and it was more manageable.

Here's the list of what gsupoker and I drank over the course of the day:
Cognac barrel aged imperial sweet stout
Leon Barrel aged barleywine (might have been my favorite of the day)
2013 Hunahpu
Three Floyd's Zombie Dust
Jester King Funk Metal
Cigar City Right Side Up Pineapple Cake (tasted EXACTLY how it sounds, amazing)
Funky Buddha Last Snow (coconut porter)
Cigar City Bourbon Barrel Aged Cherry Cordial
Cigar City Bourbon Barrel Sea Bass
Stone Best By 4.1.13
Three Floyd's Supa Rice Ronin of Death
Angry Chair Raspberry Berliner Weisse (new FL brewery)
Half Acre Space IPA
Cycle Brewing Bottom of the 9th Brown
Cigar City Hopped up Johnnie (CCB Marshal Zhukov aged on Johnny Walker Blue oak chips then dry hopped, this stole the show)
Cigar City Jamonera
Cigar City Peaches and Cream
Cigar City Criterium Wheat
Three Floyd's Sand Pebbles
Cigar City/J. Wakefield Guanabana
Cigar City Dos Anos Kumquat Berliner Weisse

We stumbled out around 6PM (I think, not surprising but can't really remember) and were some of the last to leave.

It was a ridiculous day of beer I never thought I'd get to try and we came out of there with 14 bottles due to girlfriend mules and them opening up bottle sales around 5PM between the two of us. I'll be back every year they put this on as Hunahpu is one of my favorite beers and this event can't be beat.

Re: TLDR Beer Club

Wow Pliny, that's insane. You are truly devoted. I love beer and everything but I don't know if I have the stamina for that kind of day anymore.

I'm headed to Boston to visit a friend this weekend and he noticed there are a lot of tickets up for sale for the Extreme Beer Festival put on by DFH & Beer Advocate. If we can grab some tickets we'll probably check it out. Anybody been before?

Re: TLDR Beer Club

I'm still alive (and hungover)!

Yep, we got some tickets and decided to do Beer Advocate's Extreme Beer Fest Saturday day session. Here are some of the highlights:

Allagash FV 13 -- American Wild Ale, 8.9%
The best sour beer I tasted all day. Just really well balanced and incredibly smooth for a sour beer. They know what they're doing up in Maine.

Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA -- American Double / Imperial IPA, 18% (through Randall with Mosaic hops)
DFH was the co-host of the event, and they poured the beer that I'll probably remember the most as the memories of all the other beers from yesterday start to fade. If you have the chance to get a pour of the 120 through a Randy full of hops, sieze it! I haven't brewed yet with Mosaic hops and the way these hops completely transformed the beer convinces me that I need to do so immediately. Great tropical aromas and a ton of complexity which is impressive considering that its impact can be felt on the 120.

Rhizing Bines -- American Double / Imperial IPA, 8%
With experimental hop 366 (there was a beer using this hop at the Sierra stand, too), this one I found somewhat unimpressive which gave me the sadz.

Firestone Walker Barrelworks "Wild Weisse" -- Berliner Weissbier, 3.5%
We tried to hit a bunch of session beer in between the tastings of 16%+ EXTREME beers to make sure we lasted through the day (About 15-16 session beers out of 125 being poured, in case you were wondering). This was the best session beer I tasted. I think the lacto helped it out and made it different than some of the other "hop water" we had throughout the day.

Heady Topper -- American Double / Imperial IPA, 8%
Have you ever gone to see a movie that everyone raves about, and then been disappointed because nothing, even if it's great, can live up to the wild expectations that are created in your imagination? We got in line for this beer first. There was a line from the start because everyone thought it would run out?? Anyway, really good IPA, yes, but I don't understand the hype, I guess. I suppose the we-only-brew-one-beer-perfectly-with-a-proprietary-blend-of-hops style of marketing is really working out for them.

The Bruery Black Tuesday -- American Double / Imperial Stout, 19.2% (2012 Vintage)
Like drinking vanilla extract, but in a good way. Very complex and interesting to drink. I was thinking it would be really fun to cook with, and it was the winner of the high-alcohol award for the day.

It was a lot of fun, glad I went!

Re: TLDR Beer Club

Sounds like a great time, quite a list of beers. I had Rhizing Bines last week and had the same impression, underwhelming and not memorable at all, kind of wish I didnt waste my time on it.

Its a shame you didnt enjoy Heady Topper as much as some people, I agree its hard for some beers to live up to the reputation but this one did for me. Still, IMO, the best beer in the world. One thing though, is that I have never had it on tap, only in the can so I wonder if there is some difference there.

coff, I'm with you on heady topper. I was lucky enough to pull off a trade to get some and I've quickly run through the my 4-pack (I should note that there is a fresh bottle of pliny that was sitting next to them and the heady topper easily was drained first)

I prefer it to Pliny as well.

Its the perfect pour for me, citrusy with some piney dankness but the bitterness is held in check. Simply exquisite.
