TLDR Beer Club - Page 147 - The Lounge Discussion and Review on Literature, Arts, Culture

My mash temps were low bc it was my first time. Why would that make it lower? It seems to me I'm going to have a higher FG (less sugar conversion) than a lower one.

The more sugar in the wort = higher density of water = higher OG.

If your temps are too low it won't convert all of the sugar it should. If it's bot converting the sugars you will have a more watery beer since the yeast eat the sugars and create the alcohol.

Your beer is still going to be very drinkable though. In actually aiming for a 1.036 or so OG for my next ipa.

Drank a Bell's Special Double Cream Stout and a Brooklyn Brewery Black Chocolate Stout tonight. Two similar beers but completely different in taste.

The Bell's was very sweet, creamy, roasty, and milk chocolatey flavored. It was a wonderful beer 5/5.

The Brooklyn Brewery beer has a much higher alcohol taste to it which is undesirable for my tastes. I also get lots of bittersweet chocolate and a very deep astringent roast which is again undesirable for my tastes. Overall I'd give it a 3/5.

Awesome. Never really see it much in stores around here (maybe I'm blind?) but saw a restaurant I'm going to on Friday has it on tap. Will make sure to try.

I love that bittersweet chocolate that is in BCS. Haven't had had the Bells Double Cream in a while.

I finally found Sierra Nevada Celebration here in FL. It was my first sighting and picked up a six pack. It's one of my favorite beers and it was just as good as I remember. Going to try to find a case this weekend. It's one of the few IPAs I've had that is good fresh and 6 months old.

anyone want to recommend their favorite beer bars in manhattan? i can never remember the names of bars ive been to while out in nyc, probably because nyc is one of the best places to drink, ever. only going there for one night this weekend.

A fresh hop IPA, solid, and a FANTASTIC prickly passion fruit saison.

I bought a case of the saison.

I entered 4 beers, American Wheat, Blonde, Smoked Roggenbier, and an Imperial Pumpkin ale. There were 101 entrants and about 10 entries per category. Im excited to get my score sheets back since thats the real reason I entered all these brews anyway.

Yea thats the one, its just ok, I knew it wouldnt do great but id like someone to tell me what I may have done wrong. My guess is it scored in the high 20s to low 30s at best, but that might be optimistic I'll probably post my score sheets if people are interested.

Yeah I'd be interested in seeing your score sheets as well. I got to do some stewarding and judging a few weeks ago and I was shocked to learn that they make the judges come within a certain number of points together. I get that it can make the judges talk and try to get a closer average but I think it kind of takes away from the good criticism you can get of the beer.

I placed 2nd in the IPA category this past weekend in a competition in Maryland out of 9. I entered an extract Two Hearted clone which scored a 34/50. Still waiting on the score sheets. It's tasty but I wasn't expecting it to do that well.
