I haven't heard that but I heard the one with Freetail about treating their fruit/vegetables with sulfites and I emailed them to learn more and I actually used the process on my pineapples. This is what they responded:

"Thanks for listening! Sulfites are tricky, especially on a Homebrew scale because you have to use so little. I can give you our dosage, and you can scale, but be careful, as sulfites can be dangerous in excess. For a 23 barrel batch of cucumber Berliner, I used one ounce of a solution made of 8oz hot water and 1oz straight sodium meta bisulfate. This solution went into app. 15 gallons of cucumber juice, rested 24 hours, then injected into secondary fermentation. The idea is that you over sulfite the **** out of the fruit, but then blend it down to a healthy level when mixed into your fermenting beer. Best of luck!

Took my chances on 61 minute by dogfish.

Anyone tried/ like it.

I thought it was fine but falsely advertised as anything close to an ipa. I'm usually not a dogfish purchaser but thought I'd give it a shot.

Just booked a trip to Portland, OR for 4 days in May, will have a full TR with pics after.

Planning on hitting Cascade, Deschuted brewpub, Hair of the Dog, Upright, Hopworks, Commons, Breakside, Gigantic, Lucky Lab, Rogue and others.

Anybody ever been and have suggestions, either for bars, breweries, good food or things to do?

Speaking of TRs, Coff where's your Belgium one?

I must say that when I first started drinking their beers, I loved all of them. They were my first "craft" brew, and now that I look back on it, that is why I was so in love with them. Now-a-days, they just aren't my style anymore. The 60 Minute is eh, the 90 minute is Eh, Midas Touch is still tasty though.

I haven't purchased any DFH for about 6 months if that says anything.

I was going to type up a response, but this is better:

I'd be happy to give updates on other goings on around town as the date gets closer as well.

I'm closely following that thread and it seems pretty extensive so I guess I just was looking for personal experiences. Also, yeah any events or happenings would be great. I heard on BA today Cascade is releasing Burbonic Plague around mid-May, so hopefully ill be there for that (trip is May 7-11)

There's an OOT regular who opened a bar in Portland within the last year or 18 months. KJS, maybe? Something like that.

I'll be honest, you can skip rouge. Mostly because they don't really have anything on tap that you can't buy at retail.

Breakside is out of the way from the other ones you listed and HUB on SE Powell (I haven't done the biker bar) is slightly out of the way as well. Gigantic is definitely out of the way too. I would also highly suggest putting amnesia (it's in the general area of upright) on your list. By amensia and upright is Prost! and Saraveza. I haven't been to them, but a good friend visited them and gave them the thumbs up.

You can easily do Cascade, HotD, Lucky Lab, and Commons in one day and one general hop. Commons is totally worth the trip and I went there with JaredL when I was there in Jan. My only "issue" with them is just their very limited hours. If you take a cab there, you may be dropped off in front of a glass place, just keep walking around the corner until you find Commons. It's in that general complex, but it was confusing at first.

Across from Cascade is Green Dragon. You want to go there. I also suggest hitting up Robo Taco for a quick bite as it's near Cascade and Green Dragon. You'll also want to go to Apex on SE Division and Beer Mongers (more a place to buy bottles, but I think you can drink there too) is near it too. There's also a really awesome Banh Mi place across the street that uses some pretty killer ingredients.

I didn't go to basecamp brewing on my last trip, but there's a really good ramen and japanese place near it called Biwa.

If you go to Breakside, you also hit up alameda (their brews are solid, but it's cool and feels like a bigger neighborhood bar) and definitely Grain and Gristle for both food and beer.

Deschutes is a must visit, but I would also extremely suggest that you do it earlier in the day. It gets ****ing packed there the later the day goes on and can be a royal PITA to get beers and food. You'll also want to go to Bailey's Tap Room which is nearby. It's a cool and smaller bar with a lot of good stuff on tap.

If you are into hiking and running, Mt. Tabor Park and Forest Park are awesome places to roam.

I would really recommend downloading taxi magic for your phone if you have an andriod or Iphone. If you don't have them, make sure you write down one of the cab companies numbers (Radio cab is the main one I have used). It can be a real PITA to flag down a cab.

That's all I can think of right now. I'm sure I can come up with more stuff, but I would also say, don't try to cram everything in. If you don't get to some places, c'est la vie. Just be sure to remember that a lot of places close at or before midnight. It's not a town with a lot of late night bars.

Since this is the beer thread, I figured you guys might possibly know better than the LV Lifestyle thread. Hitting Vegas next weekend, and was wondering if anyone knew of any good places to get some craft brews? Will be on the strip.

From what I've heard, Las Vegas is somewhat of a craft beer wasteland. From what I've read Burger Bar in Mandalay Bay is decent and Todd English PUB is good (don't know where that one is)

Yeah, the strip kind of sucks for craft beer. Todd English Pub in Aria does have a decent enough list even though it's super expensive.

When I was there a year ago they had The Abyss on draft in imperial pints - during happy hour when all pints were half price it was 6$ for a big-ass glass of one of the most well-regarded beers out there. We were laughing at the absurdity at having to go to a Vegas Casino to get perhaps the best deal on a beer I've ever had.

Yeah the last time we were there we were recommended to hit up that pub, but when I seen the prices, we ended up not going. Eh no big deal, I always bring a cache of craft brews along with me anyway. Thanks though!

Went last year and several times stopped by Burger Bar in Mandalay and got a beer to go for a nice walking around craft brew.

PUB is right by Aria and they have some great beer on tap. I remember drinking Firestone walker double jack, which I had never seen on tap before.

If you don't mind a bit of a walk, Ellis Island is a brewpub/restaurant/locals-type casino on Koval east of Bally's. Pretty good beer, have not eaten there, but hear good things. reviews here

I'd guess it's 1/2 to 3/4 mile walk each way (?).

I was also able to find acceptable micros at the Walgreens etc along the strip for a taste while ambling along. Stuff like Tenaya Creek, Fat Tire, etc.

Considering I am staying at The Quad, that isn't a very far walk at all!

Thanks!
